Factbox – Iran’s $38 billion airplane purchases under nuclear deal

(Reuters) – Aircraft deals with Iran worth some $38 billion (28.09 billion pounds) at catalogue prices are among Western business transactions in the balance as President Donald Trump prepares to announce a decision on whether to keep the United States inside the Iran nuclear deal.

Here is a breakdown of principal deals negotiated since most international sanctions were lifted under the 2015 deal between Tehran and major powers, which reopened trade in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities.

All orders depend on U.S. export licences because both U.S. and European aircraft contain more than 10 percent U.S. parts.

Prices shown are at catalogue prices. Airlines typically win discounts of 50 percent or more for bulk orders.

Childhood passion grows into vocation

The Rev. Dr. Don Duford was present at his son’s lecture on the history and restoration of the Memphis Belle at the Champaign Aviation Museum on April 26. Although son Jeff is the curator of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and Don is the priest-in-charge of the Episcopal churches in Urbana and Mechanicsburg, Don said they are joined by a shared feeling that their chosen profession is more than a career but in fact a life-long vocation.

“When he was 10 years old I took him to the air museum because he loved aircraft,” said Don. “I had a traveling job at the time and I would buy him a model aircraft on every trip I took and he would put it together and we’d hang it from the ceiling of his bedroom. He loved aircraft and he wanted to go to that museum, so on his 10th birthday I took him down. As soon as he walked in to the beginning, with the early aircraft, he knew every one of them and he was telling me all about them. He wasn’t reading off any of the signs. He said he learned it from the books I had given him, and from the models, and he said he wanted to work there.”

Don also said that when he finally sold their house in Michigan, the prospective buyer offered to pay the asking price provided he could keep the model airplanes in Jeff’s old bedroom. Don and his wife now

Battery-Powered Planes Could Transform Regional Travel

All-electric commercial planes are getting close to a reality, and could transport passengers on short journeys for a fraction of the cost

The weight of batteries versus the amount of energy they carry has been keeping the dream of all-electric planes on the ground. But with improvements in the field of materials engineering, startup Eviation is confident that it’s time to seriously consider building airplanes powered entirely by batteries.

Off the bat, Eviation won’t be competing with the Airbus A340 or Boeing 747. Instead, the new breed of airplanes will fly shorter distances and ferry fewer passengers.

The Eviation website has a dedicated page for a concept model called “Alice,” its potential first aircraft. The plane features three propellers: a main one in the rear and two smaller propellers on each wing. It’s a very small plane, with a seating capacity of just nine passengers and two pilots. The projected range is a meager 650 miles, but it’s far enough for flights between San Francisco and Los Angeles (a 347-mile distance).

The Israel-based startup thinks its gateway into the airline industry lies in ultra-short flights. Without requiring expensive jet fuel, it could overtake established players like Cessna. And the company is not even considering building hybrids. In an interview with Fast Company, co-founder and CEO Omer Bar-Yohay said, “If you look at the numbers, the overall cost of maintaining the cost of complexity of a hybrid unit

FROM MAGAZINE: Aerospace logistics preparing for a smooth take-off

With rapidly ageing fleet in the mature markets and growing demand from airlines and fleet operators for next generation, more fuel-efficient aircraft equipped with advanced avionics, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are ramping up production to meet customer needs. This has resulted in creating pressure on the aerospace supply chain like never before. The need to innovate has never been more important.
Surya Kannoth

Aerospace has always been one of the core industries for air cargo operations worldwide. While its share in total volumes may be significantly small, volumes of aerospace commodities steadily increase every year with solid growth of over five percent per annum.

With the growing size of fleets for passenger and cargo airlines as well as demand for upgrades and enhancement of older aircraft, the transportation of aerospace cargo remains on a strong footing. Furthermore, with the income growth of emerging markets of the middle classes in the likes of China, India and South East Asia, air travel demand has witnessed an uptick over the last five years and is forecast to continue. This upsurge is bound with increased necessity for manufacturing with multi-tier production requirements and increased volumes in aerospace logistics, both planned (for manufacturing, routine spare parts delivery, maintenance supplies, etc) and time-critical (supply chain bottlenecks or Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations being the case), which gives opportunity for expansion and growth in the aerospace logistics sector.

“Until ten years ago, the aerospace logistics sector was very stable and traditional and far behind other industries like high-tech

NTSB: Fast-changing weather played role in death of Greenacres pilot

A new report on the 2016 death of a Greenacres pilot suggests just how much may have gone wrong over the Illinois skies. A shredded wing. Freakishly strong updrafts. And a wing pushed so hard it bent one way, and then another, and may have spun around.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s newest report on the July 2016 crash does not attempt to say how the wreck began. But it confirms that the twin-engine Piper Comanche broke up in mid-air, scattering some pieces of debris a mile away from others.

The only person on the plane, pilot Garry Thomas Bernardo, 58, was killed. No one on the ground was injured from the crash, which started a fire in Joliet, Ill.

Radar imagery and a computer model suggest the airplane was hit with fast-rising winds. The computer model showed updrafts, called convective available potential energy, capable of pushing upward at a rate of a football field per second. Upward drafts in the area were estimated at 4,207 joules per kilogram, with downdrafts of 1,194. Moderate values are considered 736, the NTSB reported.

A computer model suggested the airplane pitched about 20 degrees up for several minutes, rising several thousand feet and bleeding off airspeed. It slowed to as little as 48 knots, about 55 miles per hour, slower than the airplane’s stated stall speed. The plane began losing altitude and spiraling down, before going faster than the manufacturer said it should go.

Witnesses said the weather that day resembled a fast-forming thunderstorm. So
