Inside the Regionals: A Look Inside Mesa Airlines’ Headquarters and Training Center

Regional airlines are the backbone of the current hub-and-spoke system employed by the world’s major airlines. For many pilots, their first foray into the airline world is through a regional airline. However, few people know what goes on behind-the-scenes of these airlines. Fortunately for us, Mesa Airlines was kind enough to give AirlineGeeks a look at their day-to-day operations.

Mesa Airlines is a regional airline based in Phoenix, Ariz., just blocks from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, where it operates numerous routes throughout the Southwest for American Eagle in addition to its hub in Dallas, as well as its hubs in Houston and Washington for United Express. The airline operates a mixed fleet of CRJ-900s, CRJ-700s, E-175s and a sole CRJ-200 throughout the country and neighboring Canada, Mexico and The Bahamas.

The nearly 30-year old airline has its corporate headquarters and its main training center in Phoenix, all within a few miles of each other and within an earshot of the airport, constantly reminding employees about the real-world operations of the airline and of the beauty of flight that is made possible through the work they do.

Mesa Airlines’ Corporate Headquarters

Located just north of the airport at Three Gateway Tower, a bright blue building with direct views of Sky Harbor Airport, is Mesa Airlines’ corporate headquarters. The airline maintains a relatively low profile here with many passersby unaware that an entire airline is managed inside.

Sun Country remodels plane interiors, eliminating first class and adding slimmer seats

Sun Country Airlines is remodeling the interior of all its airplanes, a capacity-boosting step and a highly-visible change in the airline’s broader revolution.

First class will disappear, seats will become slimmer in profile and updated power outlets will be added.

The entire fleet, expected to reach 30 planes by the end of the year, will undergo the makeover in November and December, the company announced Wednesday. Sun Country’s chief executive Jude Bricker outlined what to expect in an e-mail to customers and employees.

Sun Country will install slimline seats, similar to those seen in economy class on other U.S. airlines, allowing for more seats per plane.

With the changes, the airline’s fleet, a mix of Boeing 737s, will all be able to seat 183 people. That will be a 45 percent jump on its 737-700 planes, which now seat 126, and a 9 percent jump on its 737-800s, which now seat 168.

The airline has been losing money with the first class section in its planes. Sun Country has been selling only about half of its first class tickets while nearly one-third of the seats flew empty, said Brian Davis, the airline’s new senior vice president of commercial.

“That makes it feel like that isn’t an appropriate product for our customers,” Davis said. “I’m fully prepared that there are some people who like first class and will be disappointed to see it go. If we look at the big picture, we believe this is the right decision.”

Combat Is the Mother of Invention

When a french Morane-Saulnier Model L slipped behind them, the Germans in the Albatros reconnaissance airplane likely sensed no threat. They were flying over northern France on April Fool’s Day, 1915, but the outmoded Model L carried only a pilot and no gunner. Besides, in an era when aircraft couldn’t shoot straight ahead, the Albatros pilot and observer no doubt thought that an enemy right behind was little worry. Odd, though, that an unarmed scout would tailgate like this, wasn’t it?

Moments later, the Albatros pilot was killed instantly by a 15-round burst from a fixed, forward-firing Hotchkiss machine gun mounted on the spindly Model L’s cockpit. Helpless in the seat behind the slumped pilot, the observer rode the spiraling biplane down to his death, perhaps wondering: How could this happen?

Warplanes are subject to revision as combat rewrites requirements. Thinking outside the blueprints, sometimes flouting formalities and factory-standard procedures, creative minds from World War I to Desert Storm have custom-tweaked flying machines to suit the demands of the moment.

One of the first airplanes in history altered for purposes of aerial combat, the straight-shooting Model L was modified by its pilot, Roland Garros, and his personal mechanic, Jules Hue.

Early military pilots endured the shortcomings of standard equipment: Air-to-air combat was an awkward hit-and-miss, with swivel-mounted machine guns (or hand-held rifles) limited to broadside and backward fusillades. Accurate aerial marksmanship demanded a stationary machine gun, mounted inline with the cockpit and firing straight through the propeller arc. Point airplane at target. Pull trigger.

Turkey strengthens defence ties with Italy as tensions with EU increases – "Business as usual" (5)

Introduction

An investigation by Ahval reveals how increasing trade between European companies and Turkey affects political relations between European Union states and the mainly-Muslim nation.

A close examination reveals that while EU leaders express concern about the Turkish government’s human right abuses, companies based in the EU are stepping up trade with Ankara and continuing to make more money.

Experts say foreign investors may be willing to ignore human rights violations in Turkey, but authoritarian practices may eventually risk property rights and might come back to haunt them in the end.

The question is do European firms engage in lobbying on behalf of one of their most lucrative clients, Erdoğan, pleading with their governments for his abuses to be tolerated?

Business as usual: In a series of articles Ahval lifts the cover over a dark trade, driven by greed.

In February of this year, a month before the elections that changed the Italian political landscape, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Italy. In a rare interview, he praised relations with Italy as Turkey’s third biggest commercial partner and vowed to further increase the trade volume.

According to Italian media, Erdoğan was later disappointed by the coldness of officials during the visit. Both President Sergio Mattarella and incumbent Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni had asked him to end Turkey’s state of emergency and to respect human rights.

In contrast, Erdoğan’s meeting with Italian businessmen was very successful. Economic exchanges between the two countries are flourishing despite the souring of Turkey’s relations with the European

The S-3 Viking Could Do It All (And Hunt Russian Submarines): So What Happened?

The Navy is unlikely to return to the Viking, despite its demonstrated flexibility. This is out of a defensible preference for operating fewer different types of aircraft to maximize efficiency in training, maintenance and spare parts. However, the Viking’s retirements reinforces the Navy’s continued reliance on short-range carrier-based aircraft, which is becoming an increasing liability as more capable shore-based missiles threaten carriers at or beyond the maximum combat radius of their onboard aircraft.

Roughly nine years ago the U.S. Navy retired:

A) Its only dedicated carrier-based tanker;

B) its last dedicated carrier-based antisubmarine airplane;

C) a carrier-based plane with more than twice the range of its current jets;

D) all of the above.

With a maximum speed of only five hundred miles per hour—many airliners fly faster—the S-3 Viking wasn’t about to be the subject of any movies starring Tom Cruise. However, the long-legged jets proved extremely useful in a very wide variety of roles, whether as an electronic spy, submarine hunter, aerial tanker, cargo plane or even an attack jet. And many of those roles have not been satisfactorily replaced since.

The S-3 Viking was first conceived in 1960s to serve as a next-generation submarine hunter. In the event of a war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the U.S. Navy’s most important mission would have

RSF navigator inducted into Michigan Aviation Hall of Fame

One of the proudest accomplishments of Ursini’s aviation career was being involved in the testing of YF-12, the prototype for the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance vehicle—the aircraft is still the world’s fastest airplane, flying 500 miles per hour faster than anything else. The YF-12 set a speed record of more than 2,070 miles per hour and sustained an altitude record of nearly 80,258 feet, later surpassed by the SR-71.
