GDPR can have an impact on US accountants

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation takes effect Friday, and it could affect accountants and auditors, along with their clients, in the U.S.

Under the GDPR, any company that gathers, monitors or manages the personal information of EU residents will need to make drastic changes in how it gets and stores the data. Companies in both Europe and the U.S. have been blitzing consumers in recent weeks with emails about new user agreements and privacy policies, while some U.S. businesses have announced they will need to exit the European market.

“There’s a lot of U.S. companies that are selling goods and services to individuals in the EU, and there are many dotcom companies and ecommerce companies that have a global footprint and are selling to people all over the world, even if their employees and infrastructure are all in the United States,” said Jeffrey Sanchez, security and privacy managing director at the global consulting firm Protiviti. “Certainly GDPR applies to those organizations. GDPR also applies to other brick and mortar companies that are selling goods and services, whether it’s airplane parts, construction equipment, or a variety of finished products in Europe, where GDPR is going to apply. The reach of GDPR is very broad. One of the biggest changes between the previous privacy legislation and GDPR is that GDPR applies to any company, regardless of where they’re physically located if they’re selling goods and services to people inside the EU.”

Boeing 737 Max On Course To Meet Reliability Goals

A year after its entry into service with launch operator Malindo Air of Malaysia, the Boeing 737 Max has registered a fleet-wide 99.4 percent dispatch reliability rate, a performance Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of marketing Randy Tinseth pronounced as higher than “any new airplane entering service.” Speaking with reporters two days after Boeing celebrated the anniversary along with delivery of Xiamen Airlines’s first of 20 Max 8s on order (the airline also holds an order for 10 Max 10s), Tinseth acknowledged changes from the 737NG produced certain “teething problems,” but nothing particularly unexpected over its first 12 months in service.

“We went with things like fly-by-wire spoilers on the aircraft, so there were changes,” said Tinseth. “I think the good thing is, as we looked at it, we don’t think the design changes impacted the other systems or the other parts of the airplane…At 99.4 percent we have nothing to apologize for.” Tinseth added that the company’s target of 99.7 percent by the end of this year appears clearly within reach.

Now having sent to 28 new customers 130 of the narrowbodies, consisting mainly of Max 8s and including less than 10 Max 9s, Boeing has also delivered the airplanes at the planned rate, despite a certain “tightness” in the supply chain. All told, Max jets accounted for between 10 and 15 percent of all 737 deliveries last year and the company expects that proportion to rise to between 40 and 45 percent this year.

“I can tell you, though, that the

‘They smell like it and sound like it’: Model jet planes fly in through Sunday

More than 125 pilots and up to 400 radio-controlled jet planes are converging on the Wilson Industrial Airport for the eighth annual First in Flight Jet Rally.

“We have radio-controlled jet pilots and enthusiasts from all over the eastern seaboard, California, Texas, Puerto Rico and Canada,” said Larry Lewis, of Raleigh, who is head coordinator and contest director for the rally.

The free event began Wednesday and will run through Sunday.

“We have got it set up so that when the spectators come in, they will be able to walk right down through the middle of pit row and get up really close to all of the airplanes,” Lewis said. “They will be able to get their pictures taken with them because some of these planes are going to be really big for models. They can talk to the pilots. We are going to have vendors set up out here so if they are interested in getting into the hobby, they are going to have some entry-level-type planes.”

Radio-controlled aircraft hobbyists representing clubs from Wilson, Raleigh/Durham, Greenville and Kinston put on the event. Together, they’re called the First in Flight Jet Club.

Gene Poremba is a member of the Wilson R/C Modelers Association and also an employee for the city of Wilson.

“I take care of the radio and communicate with the full-scale aircraft to keep communication between the model pilots and the full-scale pilots so we don’t have

From Snapchat Parent to Tesla: Automaker Gains New VP of Engineering

As Tesla’s upper ranks shed members like a bad tennis club, a new executive is poised to tackle the automaker’s engineering portfolio.

Stuart Bowers, formerly the vice president of monetization engineering for social media platform Snapchat’s parent company, Snap, will soon don the title of VP of engineering at Tesla. That’s good news for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who recently lost — perhaps temporarily — his senior VP of engineering.

Doug Fields’ claimed sabbatical earlier this month was the last in a flurry of departures from the Palo Alto, California automaker. In its wake, Musk announced a flattening of his company’s corporate structure, along with new hires to support the Model 3 production ramp.

“To ensure that Tesla is well prepared for the future, we have been undertaking a thorough reorganization of our company,” the CEO stated in a memo to staff.

As reported by Cheddar, Bowers’ new role will see him working on a number of engineering files, including the company’s Autopilot software. A spokesperson at Snap stated Bowers “has long had a dream to pursue his passion for robotics and we wish him the best.”

Jim Keller, who once headed up Tesla’s Autopilot division, quit the company in April before setting up shop at Intel. Other departures this spring included Matthew Schwall, the company’s main technical contact with U.S. safety investigators, who left for rival Waymo. Before that, sales chief Jon McNeill headed over to Lyft.

Bowers’ time at Snap was a troubled one, with the company struggling to win over

Memorial Day: Remembering a ‘deadly hornet’ who patrolled the skies in World War II

Capt. William Johnson’s war memoir — a long letter to his wife — is haunting and almost dream-like as he recounts sailing past the Statue of Liberty en route to Europe and a short, busy career blasting German planes out of the sky.

Perhaps inevitably, reading through the fighter pilot’s soulful account of sorties into enemy territory — 23 handwritten pages of cinematic prose full of bravado and premonition — calls to mind W.B. Yeats’ poem about the doomed Irish airman:

I know that I shall meet my fate / Somewhere among the clouds above; / Those that I fight I do not hate / Those that I guard I do not love…

Johnson may not have anticipated his fate, and it’s a sure bet he loved those he guarded, especially his wife and son. But the letter, written while he was based at Royal Air Force Station Martlesham Heath in England, evoke the melancholy sense that at some level, the blond, blue-eyed P-47 Thunderbolt pilot always knew what was coming.
