Quest Aircraft Unveils Series II Kodiak

Eleven years after bringing a new single-engine utility turboprop to market certified to the latest FAA Part 23 standards, Quest Aircraft has unveiled an upgraded version of its Kodiak, the new Series II. Features range from Series II paint schemes to Garmin G1000 NXi avionics, airframe improvements, and a free two-year subscription to the Garmin Pilot EFB app. The Kodiak Series II is priced at $2.15 million.

Eighteen new paint schemes are available, complementing new Kodiak branding on various parts of the airplane and accessories, including yoke plates featuring the “Built By Hand In Sandpoint Idaho” tagline.

Subtle but welcome improvements to the cabin include an easier-to-use cargo door step mechanism that also lowers cabin noise. Wing root sealing is improved to cut noise and eliminate fumes in the cabin. Pilots’ sun visors are upgraded to an improved Rosen model.

Under the hood, the Kodiak’s Pratt Whitney Canada PT6A-34 engine now features an accessory gearbox chip detector.

Crew doors can now be held open with two new door stays, one for partial opening and one to hold the door fully open. The stay allows the door and the engine cowling to be open at the same time.

The optional single-point refueling port and control panel, which add 16 pounds to the empty weight, are located at the left wing root and allow high-pressure fueling and defueling.

8 Long Island parks with perks for families

Hoping to coax your Internet-dazed youngsters outside for some park action this summer? Keep in mind you are competing with online war gods and superheroes, so make it a good pitch. Try something like “Hey, kids, let’s go look at a once-secret World War II military installation.” Or “Who wants to try out a couple of 30-foot water slides?” Or “How about we play Robin Hood at an archery range?”

Here are eight family-friendly parks and preserves that offer more than the usual hikes and playgrounds. Don’t worry if the kids seem initially confused by “reality.” Just say it’s a giant app.

Note: Passes can be purchased by county residents for free parking and discounts. The same goes for the state’s Empire Pass. For grandparents coming along, the state’s Golden Park program for New York residents older than 62 allows free access to most state parks and more discounts. John Peter Malec, Jr. – Channel3000.com – WISC

MADISON – John P. Malec Jr., age 77, died peacefully after a lengthy struggle with heart and lung disease.  

He was born on September 11, 1940, to John and Louise Malec in Madison, WI.  John married Judy (Meudt), the love of his life, on January 20, 1962.

John was a hard-working individual who began his professional career by completing one year of medical school.  He then made a thoughtful decision to join his Father-in-Law in a beer distribution service.  Reflective of his hard-working nature and love of the outdoors, John relocated his family and served as a campground owner/logger in Montana.  After approximately two years, John and his family returned to Wisconsin and John served as the General Manager of Janesville Sand Gravel/Lycon from 1974 until his retirement in 2002.  

In his retirement, John traveled to Florida with his wife Judy, maintained grounds at Governor Nelson State Park, assembled model airplanes and enjoyed reading/puzzling.  John’s intelligence, strong will and committed approach served as an inspiration to those who knew him.

John is survived by his wife Judy; a daughter, Ann Malec (George Grays) of Madison; a daughter, Julie (David) O’Malley

Terry Mosher: 76-year-old racer having ‘boatloads of fun’

Kingston’s Bob Smiley got the boat racing bug as a teenager, then had a long layoff  from the sport while pursuing a career and raising a family. Then the bug bit him again about 10 years ago.

Now Smiley, a 76-year-old Kingston resident, holds three world outboard motor speed records. And he doesn’t think he’s done setting records yet, either.

“He’s actually purchased equipment for two other engine classes,” said Bob Wartinger of Bellevue, a 73-year-old former Boeing executive who has oodles of world class boat racing experience and has been assisting Smiley. “The next step for him is getting another boat that is bigger. He’s not going to stop racing. This is a guy who built model airplanes and has led quite a life of technical accomplishments, and so he is now pursuing this.

“The virus never leaves the body. Once you smell it, you come back to it. I had a parallel life. I worked in the Boeing executive branch (director of advance informational systems) and was doing this on weekends, racing boats to records (over 100 at one time, including 23 world championships in Japan, China, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Germany, England).”

Wartinger and Smiley met last summer at Long Lake near Port Orchard, where both were testing their boats. They found they had similar interests and Wartinger had the knowledge.

Story of WWII pilot who gave his life revealed on Memorial Day

The World War II Navy pilot from Snyder was first reported killed in action.

A few days later in the fall of 1944, the Navy offered Maurice L. “Moe” Naylon Jr.’s mother some hope: He had been spotted parachuting from his damaged warplane over the Philippine island of Luzon.

More good news soon arrived: Ensign Naylon “was safe in the hands of friendly troops.”

But that was only to be followed by more bad news. Mary B. Naylon received a telegram on Jan. 24, 1945, stating her son had died nine days earlier when the plane carrying him and others back to the United States collided with another aircraft at the end of a runway on Leyte, another Philippine island.

Unlike in the previous months, there were no mistakes. Naylon, 21, had perished. His mother’s heartbreak was complete. Her grandson says she never recovered from the loss.

But for years, the story of how Naylon survived after he was first thought to have been killed in action was unknown. That changed when a Filipino immigrant, living in the United States, established contact with the Naylon family.

Now for the first time, the young Navy aviator’s story was made public Monday – Memorial Day – when the nation paid tribute to those who gave their lives defending America’s freedoms.

Hyperloop could revolutionize transport

Russell C. Wells Sr., 96

Russell C. Wells Sr. of Riverhead died May 25, 2018 at Dominican Village in Amityville. He was 96 years old.

He was born Jan. 28, 1922 in Greenport, the son of John and Carrie (Wella) Wells.

He was a 1941 graduate of Greenport High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He worked as a methods engineer at Grumman Aerospace.

In his spare time, he enjoyed sports, gardening, model airplanes and fishing. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Predeceased by his wife Therese in 2000, he is survived by his sons Russell C. Jr., Richard A. and Kevin J. and by his daughter Jeanne Ann Schilling. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, May 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, May 31 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
