Nicole Robinson (Microsoft)

Microsoft has appointed Nicole Robinson as its go-to-market lead across the One Commercial Partner (OCP) team in Australia, following an internal transition.

Effective 1 August, Robinson replaces Tony Wilkinson in the role, who is now searching for new opportunities within the business.

“A key component of Microsoft long-term success is the innovation that our partners deliver to bring customers’ digital transformation vision to life,” said Mark Leigh, director of OCP at Microsoft.

“FY19 is set up to be another breakthrough year for the Microsoft partner network and we’ll continue to enhance the core OCP operating model that we established last year.”

With more than 17 years experience, Robinson joined Microsoft in 2007, holding numerous management roles across marketing, business management and operations.

History of flight: New plane celebrates the early days of air travel

In 1912, aviation pioneer Silas Christofferson settled into his Curtiss-type Pusher airplane and, in an audacious move, took off from the roof of downtown Portland’s Multnomah Hotel, cruising across the Columbia River to the Vancouver Barracks.

These days, at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, volunteers are putting the finishing touches on a “new” aircraft that celebrates the early days of air travel and Christofferson’s historic flight.

The biplane under construction is a replica of Curtiss’ aircraft. According to those involved in the project, plans call for publicly unveiling the replica in June, to coincide with the Rose Festival, and the month of Christofferson’s journey.

A work in progress

Volunteers working on the National Park Service-funded project have used many of the same materials that Christofferson used — spruce, bamboo and ash. They’ve been guided by plans of a Curtiss Model D Pusher acquired from the Smithsonian, as well as old photographs of Christofferson’s plane.

Research has helped them figure out missing details about that aircraft, which was similar to a Model D but had an extra 10 feet of wingspan.

“We’ve tried to be as accurate and ‘period’ as we could with materials and tools,” says volunteer Dennis Darby, whose career included a stint as a design engineering manager. “It’s been a fun project.”

He joins a core of about a half-dozen volunteers, as well as others who pitch in periodically, and who all bring to the project a range of

Boeing wins big 777 and 767 freighter order from FedEx

By Dominic Gates / The Seattle Times

SEATTLE — Reaping the benefit of a worldwide recovery in air cargo, even amid fears of a global trade war, Boeing on Tuesday announced a big order from air package delivery specialist FedEx Express.

FedEx ordered a dozen 777 freighters for delivery between fiscal 2021 and 2025. While that’s too late to help fill out empty delivery airplane slots on the assembly line in Everett between now and the introduction of the new 777X model in 2020, it will help bolster production in the early, slow-production years of the 777X.

In addition, FedEx ordered a dozen 767 freighters for delivery between fiscal 2020 and 2022, vindicating Boeing’s decision to increase production of that jet by 20 percent from 2.5 to 3 jets per month beginning in 2020.

The combined 767 and 777 order for 24 widebody aircraft is valued at $6.6 billion using Boeing’s list prices. However, market pricing data from aircraft valuation firm Avitas indicates that the real value, after standard discounts, is no more than $2.8 billion.

The April move to hike the 767 production rate was triggered by a strong recovery in the air cargo market over the past two years.

Boeing is well placed to take advantage because it enjoys a monopoly in mid-size and large cargo aircraft with its 767, 777 and 747 freighter jets. Rival jetmaker Airbus focuses on passenger planes almost exclusively and offers no competition for any of those cargo planes.

The boost from FedEx follows one from rival package carrier UPS,

Behavioural modelling and experimentation a winner for Employsure

LANDESK acquires former LANDESK One Partner, Xtraction Solutions

Behavioural modelling and experimentation have allowed workplace relationships specialist, Employsure, to chalk up a 109 per cent uptake in conversions.

By adopting a culture of experimentation, where every new idea is tested and constant iteration is vital, Employsure says it is now able to better understand the psychology behind the user journey and fuel growth.

In one example, Employsure focused on a test page promoting the Advice line, highlighting simple offers and generic messaging. After applying behavioural models, the team realised these users were in crisis and were actually viewing the Advice line as an emergency hotline.

This data led to a pivot. With language that shifted towards empathy, Employsure was better able to communicate with customers about their fears, Ben Scemama, a senior marketer at the group, said.

The culture of experimentation for Employsure has been so successful, Scemama wonders how the business actually ever made decisions without it. He told CMO less than 5 per cent of what is tested is successful. This means prior to the experimentation, the company had a 95 per cent chance of failure without even realising it.

Busy week of aviation heritage takes wing

Photo Gallery

A team of airplane builders has been trying to set aviation back 106 years.

They reached their goal Tuesday morning when they rolled a full-size replica of a 1912 Curtiss Pusher into the hangar at Pearson Air Museum.

It was a tribute to the biplane piloted by Silas Christofferson, who took off from the roof of Portland’s Multnomah Hotel on June 11, 1912. He landed about 10 minutes later at the Vancouver Barracks polo grounds.

There was no landing Tuesday for the replica Curtiss Pusher: It will never fly. But it could, team leader Mike Daly said.

With a working engine, “It would lift off,” Daly said.

“All of the elements of the airplane are constructed with the same materials and techniques that Silas Christofferson would have used in 1912,” said Bob Cromwell, manager of Pearson Air Museum.

Tuesday’s journey from a nearby workshop to the museum was part of a busy week of aviation heritage at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Wednesday marks the 81st anniversary of the first flight over the North Pole. On June 20, 1937, Valery Chkalov and two fellow Soviet airmen ended their 63-hour flight from Moscow to Vancouver.

The annual commemoration will include a wreath laying at 9:30 a.m. at the outdoor Chkalov monument at Pearson Air Museum.
