Archives On The Air 17: The Flying Feline—Roscoe Turner Collection

The 1930s usually conjure images of dust and despondence – not of lion cubs sitting in the back of racing airplanes. But from 1930 to 1938, legendary Pilot Roscoe Turner was flying in cross-country airplanes with his pet lion Gilmore.

Roscoe Turner made Gilmore the lion his copilot around 1929. Turner had already established himself as a noteworthy pilot long before the flying feline hit the scene.

Turner was born in Mississippi in 1895. He learned to fly while serving in the military during World War I.

Turner continued to fly after leaving the military. He raced in his plane, he did stunt flying, and he experimented with new ideas in the air, including a flying circus. Turner also owned a commercial flight service later in his life.

Roscoe Turner did not just fly planes, he also designed planes and broke records flying them.

Turner’s papers are available at UW’s American Heritage Center and include model airplanes, blueprints, and of course photos of Gilmore the lion flying high.

Presidential visits ground model airplanes for thousands of square miles

Trump jet

Model aircraft flyers throughout Central New Jersey are hoping they could one day be allowed to fly while the president is in town.

Whenever President Donald Trump makes a visit to his private golf course in Bedminster, or anywhere else in the country for that matter, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for a 30-mile radius.

This year, Trump has visited the Central New Jersey golf course twice. Last year, he came several times during the summer.

The TFRs ground aircrafts as large as a Boeing 757 — like Trump’s own personal jet — and as small a model RC plane.

“It affects our ability for educating people, bringing them into the hobby, because our hobby is family-oriented and community-based,” said Eric Williams, vice president of District II for the Academy of Model Aeronautics. “It also affects the community events and organizations that we support.”

Just how many people does this impact? Williams said there are around 30 clubs associated with the AMA within the 30-mile radius of the TFR when the president is at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. He also said there are about 2,500 members affected by the TFR.

Last year, for example, members of the Broken Props Airplane Club, a part of Somerset County 4-H, could not fly their model airplanes at the Somerset County 4-H Fair because Trump was visiting his golf course in Bedminster.

In addition, the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning had to meet with the Secret

Creative logistics partnership between DB Schenker and Airbus to benefit Mobile, Alabama

In an announcement that has many global implications for one of the world’s largest logistics providers, DB Schenker has developed a streamlined logistics and transportation system for Airbus’ final assembly line production in Mobile, Ala.

According to spokesmen, this is an indication “of strong European-U.S. trade relations,” as it is a model for increasing employment for the City of Mobile while allowing Airbus to widen its distribution network.

Airbus partnered with DB Schenker to develop a logistics plan to accommodate the manufacturer’s larger, ocean-going vessels. Those vessels are now being used for the international transport of four complete airplane “ship sets” per month. Using a new roll-on/roll-off terminal, its barge, and a newly-dredged section of river, Airbus can now use larger vessels to transfer the components by water.

Tanguy Largeau, DB Schenker’s Head of Vertical Market Aerospace Americas, says the logistics provider took an innovative approach to reduce road transport of the parts, and to mirror Airbus’ European operations and organize transportation via waterway.

“The Port of Mobile (Alabama State Port Authority/ASPA) is a crucial element to ensure all stakeholders involved operate in a safe environment, and that the required infrastructure (ship berth, dock space, etc.) is in place to support this operation,” said Largeau in an interview with LM.

He added that ASPA and all the other involved stakeholders have been crucial elements to the success of this project.

“At Brookley Airport in Mobile where the Airbus FAL and the DBS ISF are located the Mobile Airport Authority/MAA have also been a very important supporter and reason

And now for news on the homefront: Museum’s newest exhibit provides different look at war

EDMOND, Okla. — When thinking of World War II, one often remembers the poster of Uncle Sam saying “I want you for the U.S. Army.” Posters like this were hugely popular around the world, and many were used to seek support or raise funds for World War II.

The Edmond Historical Society and Museum’s newest exhibit features similar posters from this time in history, and specifically those used for fundraising for the war effort.

The exhibit, titled “Work, Fight, Give,” opened July 5 and runs through Aug. 16 providing a different view of the war. The exhibit coincides with a second, more local, exhibit about activities at home during the war.

Curator of Collections, Derek Lee said the poster exhibit portrays a different side to one of the country’s most tragic events.

“It’s a traveling exhibit from Mid-America Art Alliance — a collection of relief posters from World War II fundraising for various causes in different countries,” Lee said.

“Work, Fight, Give”  focuses on those who gave of their artistic talents to design posters that were aimed at the heart of Americans, to persuade citizens to donate their time and resources. Many of America’s top artists and illustrators designed the relief posters, and they often employed historical, mythological, and cultural symbols representing various countries and cultures.

In addition to “Work, Fight, Give,” the museum will have another exhibit portraying life on the Homefront in Edmond.

Museum Exhibit coordinator Amy Stephens explained, “Housewives on the Homefront,” also displays life during

JetBlue to Order 60 Airbus CSeries Jets

JetBlue Airways Corp. on Tuesday said it would buy 60 CSeries jetliners from Airbus SE with options for more, as the European plane maker’s rivalry with Boeing Co. extends into the market for smaller planes.

Airline executives said the new aircraft would expand the reach of the smaller aircraft in JetBlue’s fleet, allowing them to take transcontinental U.S. flights while burning 40% less fuel per seat.
