Up in the air with style and flair

Curiosity about flight has led to all types of flying machines in the past century, taking people around the world, but there is still a simple pleasure and thrill of being able to send a model plane into the sky.

That could be seen Saturday in Ryan Township as the Tuscarora R/C Flying Club began its two-day 50th anniversary Aerorama air show celebration at its own flying field near the White Birch Golf Course. There were plenty of model planes and drones for everyone to see. One youngster got a thrill watching aerial displays above the field, all radio controlled by skilled hobbyists identified as “pilots.”

After so many rainy days, Saturday’s hot sun and today’s sunny forecast had club President Ed Pollack feeling happy. When asked between running from one place and another to get the event ready, he gave credit where he believes credit is due.

“You know what? There is a deity involved,” Pollack said. “We’ve had monsoons the last three weeks. Now we have two good days, and it’s supposed to start all over again on Monday. I asked everyone a month ago to pray. Our prayers have been answered.”

In announcing the anniversary, Pollack said the club is adding to its purpose beyond being an organization for flying model airplanes.

“Our mission this year is to introduce drone flying to the public and generate public awareness of the growing interest and necessity of drone flying,” Pollack said. “We already have made inroads with county officials to begin a training awareness

Looking to decorate your home? How about the nose of a Boeing 727 or a landing gear?

Sure, you own a 20,000-square-foot megamansion after cashing in on that IPO. Now you need to decorate it.

How about these one-of-a-kind objets d’art?

There’s a nearly-life-size model of a Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 turbofan jet engine, the type that powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Even at 90 percent scale, it comes in at about 10 feet in a diameter. The blades even spin after you plug it into an electric outlet.

That’ll impress guests at your next party.

Or a 40-to-50-foot nose from a Boeing 727.

And 10-foot-high landing gear from a Boeing 777, with twin tires each a little under 4 feet in diameter.

Those are the big, big airplane parts available for the discerning collector in this unusual liquidation.

And you might have them for $1 each, although there is a hitch: The cost of hauling them away. For that, prepare to spend a few tens of thousands of dollars.

The smaller items, like a 5-foot “Magic Planet interactive,” that projects with a special lens into a big sphere, could fit into a minivan.

The reason for the sale is Boeing, which has long leased a portion of the Paine Field building that houses the Future of Flight Aviation Center Boeing Tour, will now lease the entire building. This means the Institute of Flight, which has displayed numerous aviation items in a cavernous hall, will no longer

‘One Week Wonder’ team builds plane in less than a week at EAA Airventure

OSHKOSH, Wis. Sunday is the last day of EAA Airventure in Oshkosh, the world’s largest fly-in airplane convention. The event brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Fox Valley year after year, but the last day of Airventure isn’t only for goodbyes.

Sunday marks the day the ‘One Week Wonder’ team accomplished a monumental goal of building an airplane from start to finish in less than a week. The ‘One Week Wonder’ exhibit is a partnership between Van’s Aircraft and EAA.

”The model is the RV-12 iS, it’s our light sport model, so it looks like we’re about ready to make history here by getting one of these aircraft from a box of parts to a flying aircraft in six and one-half days, said Mitchell Lock, president of Van’s Aircraft.

”We’re looking forward to One Week Wonder, the airplane we’ve been building over the course of the week, to bring that out, start the engine, taxi it out to the flight line so everybody can see the airplane is completed then can go into flight testing,” said Dick Knapinski with EAA Airventure.

The planning of the project took hundreds of hours and longer than half a year.

”You know we’ve had over 75 actual volunteers all week long doing various things, but as the week goes on the work area gets concentrated down and we get to the last little parts where we really need the people with the full expertise of the project just to get these
