It’s Official! Blue Angels To Receive Full Squadron Of Super Hornets By End Of 2021

News that the Navy was seriously considering the transition dates back to 2015, but this contract announcement comes as NAVAIR has enacted a plan that would see many of its youngest Legacy Hornets (F/A-18A-Ds) ported over to the USMC. This was only possible due to increased funding as part of the Trump administration’s military buildup and a larger multi-year buy of Super Hornets. These measures will drastically improve what was becoming something of a dire ‘fighter gap’ brought on by years of warfare overseas that literally flew the wings off the Navy’s tactical air fleet, delays in the F-35 program, and lack of prioritization when it came to spares procurement and general readiness under sequester.

With more Super Hornets coming, and in the advanced Block III form no less, and the first Super Hornets heading to Boeing for a service life extension which will also include Block III upgrades in many instances, the Navy can treat its prized demo team to some newer hardware.

Traditionally the team’s F/A-18C/Ds are among the oldest and highest hour jets in the fleet. In recent years they have been subject to a number of incidents in which parts literally fell off the aircraft in flight. Beyond that, the aging aircraft are becoming more of a hassle to keep up with the team’s highly demanding schedule. With all this in mind, the Super Hornets, which are likely

Korean Air passenger dragged off flight while shouting, resisting several police officers

A Korean Air flight preparing to leave from Incheon Airport was reportedly delayed almost two hours because of the passenger.

A U.S.-bound passenger was reportedly dragged off a Korean Air flight from South Korea to San Francisco on Friday, allegedly because she refused to sit in her designated economy seat.

Footage of the incident — shared to YouTube by Korea JoongAng Daily, a Korean newspaper affiliated with The New York Times — shows the woman resisting as several security officers attempt to remove her before takeoff from Incheon Airport.

A representative for Korean Air tells Fox News the women seen removing the passenger were female police officers, and not Korean Air crew members, as was previously reported.

Model airplane enthusiast makes pitch for a field in Riverhead

He may be 90, but Vince Juliano is still young enough to follow his dreams.

Juliano’s dream: establish a model airplane club in Riverhead.

The Rocky Point man has been a model airplane aficionado for many years and still flies his “Team Grumman” plane in competitions.

“I entered that last year in Florida,” Juliano told town board members at Thursday’s work session. “I got a medal because I’m old,” he quipped.

Juliano’s dream also includes finding land in the Town of Riverhead that could be used by the model airplane club he’d like to establish. It would need to be sufficiently distant from homes or places where people gather, he said. It would need access to electricity and should be large enough to accommodate competitive events the club would host.

Events at the model airfield would attract visitors from across the region, he said.

Juliano didn’t have a specific location in mind.

The club would be responsible for improving and maintaining the field and would provide the town with liability insurance, Juliano said.

Riverhead town board members listened to the man’s pitch at the Aug. 9 work session.

Stolen airplane raises security questions

STOLEN PLANE RAISES SECURITY QUESTIONS: A Horizon Air ground service agent stole a regional turboprop plane Friday from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, taking it for an ill-fated ride for about an hour before crashing it into an island in Puget Sound in an apparent suicide. The man, Richard Russell, had passed all the necessary background checks to be in secure parts of the airport — getting access was the easy part.

Now what?: The incident is

Truck Parts “Grown” by 3D Printing Are Finding More Applications

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is gaining the attention of truck makers who prefer “growing” parts in small numbers to investing in expensive production tooling.

Two years after diving into additive manufacturing Mercedes-Benz Trucks now offers about 30 spare parts in any quantity at the push of a button.

Additive manufacturing is the industry term for joining materials by layering to make objects from three-dimensional math data. It uses tiny particles of plastic, metal and composites to construct a wide array of products that vary from dental crowns to airplane engine parts. Businesses are turning to the technology to save money on tooling, reduce parts inventories and speed manufacturing.

“The challenge in the spare parts business lies in securing supply even for model series which are no longer produced,” said Stefan Kurschner, senior vice president of aftermarket for Daimler Trucks North America. “Tools often have to be retained and maintained for years. With the 3D printing process, these challenges are a thing of the past.”

One of Daimler’s early 3D projects was a thermostat cover for a European Unimog truck model that it stopped producing 15 years ago.

“The trucking fleets will see it mostly in the aftermarket because of legacy components in the older equipment,” said Eric Starks, chief executive of FTR Transportation Intelligence. “Most [new] trucks have some type of additive manufactured component. But I don’t think the average buyer understands that.”
