UPDATE 3-Safran raises 2018 targets after solid H1, shares surge

* Safran H1 sales, profit beat forecasts

* Switch in factories to new jet engine model going as planned

* Shares hit record high (Updates with shares hitting record high, analysts’ note)

By Cyril Altmeyer

PARIS, Sept 6 (Reuters) – France’s Safran raised full-year forecasts after posting better-than-expected sales and profit in the first half on strong demand for spares and services, driving its shares to a record high.

The world’s third largest aerospace supplier said the switch in its factories to a new model of jet engine was going as planned. Safran added that the integration of cabins maker Zodiac Aerospace was also on track, and it had agreed to compensate Dassault Aviation for a cancelled engine order without disrupting its profit outlook.

Shares in the Paris-based company jumped more than 7 percent to 116.6 euros, an all-time high, before falling off a little. For the year to date, Safran stock is up 27 percent.

The company reported a 20.3 percent underlying rise in first-half recurring operating profit to 1.386 billion euros ($1.61 billion) on revenue which grew 10.1 percent to 9.506 billion. Analysts were on average expecting 1.249 billion euros of profit on revenue of 9.479 billion, according to a Reuters poll.

Safran predicted full-year growth of 20 percent in recurring operating income, compared with a previous forecast of close to 10 percent, and revenue up 7 percent to 9 percent compared with an earlier target of as much as 4 percent.

It firmed up its free cash

Volvo’s road-plane vision is beguilingly disruptive

Air travel is dire, autonomous car development is split into poorly-communicating silos, and the goal of cutting road fatalities and making better use of infrastructure simply isn’t the priority it ought to be. That, at least, is how Volvo sees the state of play in the self-driving world, and while the striking new 360c concept car may be a very visible expression of its focus on autonomy, arguably it’s its ambitions for co-development and exploring new businesses that are more dramatic.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Texas-sized ‘island’ of trash in ocean, to be tackled by giant floating vessel

The Ocean Cleanup is deploying a vessel made up of several pipes between California and Hawaii to trap garbage at the surface.

 (The Ocean Cleanup)

Officials are gearing up for the launch of a floating vessel — an elaborate plan masterminded by a college dropout — this weekend with the hope it will act as a giant trash collector and eventually rid the Pacific Ocean of a Texas-sized “island” of garbage.

The Ocean Cleanup Foundation plans to release the 2,000-foot-long, U-shaped contraption from San Francisco on Saturday. It will be towed through the bay, underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and taken hundreds of miles offshore, where it will undergo final testing.

After several trials, which are expected to take at least two weeks, the vessel will head toward the chunk

Sky’s the limit for aeromodelers

SHOPIERE – It’s no O’Hare, but the Town of Turtle runways have quite a bit of traffic.

The main (and some would argue major) difference is that Turtle caters to planes carrying no people.

“This was a landfill area until the Town of Turtle let us come in and use it to fly,” said Larry Nitz of the Rock River Aero Modelers Society (RRAMS).

The nonprofit RRAMS has been flying model airplanes from of the grassy field just north of the Turtle Community Center for more than a decade. The land wasn’t much use after the former landfill site was closed, so the group was welcomed by the township with open arms.

Members take pride in keeping the large space tidy and are continually working to improve the facility.

“Over the summer we even completed a new runway, built another shelter and installed pilot stations,” Nitz said.

Every year the RRAMS group members come together to raise funds and make donations that benefit the community as a ‘thank you’ for being allowed to fly there.

One year the RRAMS members helped to pay for the town clock to be repaired. Another year they bought a drone for the Turtle Fire Department to use.

“We’re really happy to be here and I think that Turtle Township is happy that we’re maintaining the space for them,” Nitz said. “We have a good relationship.”

The RRAMS group welcomes people of all ages and abilities to come and fly model planes with them. It currently has 40 active

737 problems have grown in Renton despite Boeing’s reassurances

As 53 undelivered jetliners sat parked outside Boeing’s Renton plant this week, up from just over 40 a month ago, workers inside the factory were feeling the pressure of constant overtime and an unrelenting build-up of unfinished tasks. Though Boeing assured Wall Street analysts visiting Seattle Wednesday that the pile-up of 737 jets has peaked and will be sorted out by year end, some frontline workers were less optimistic.

Planes awaiting delivery filled the ramps along the edges of Renton Municipal Airport on Tuesday, spilled onto one of the taxiways, and were parked on all available spaces on the Boeing site, along the lakefront and between the buildings.

Of those, 38 were the new 737 MAX model, 14 of them missing their engines. Delays in delivering the MAX model’s new LEAP engines, made by CFM International, are just one of the choke points causing the pile-up.

Two workers said the engine supply is noticeably improving. Yet shortages of other parts mean the amount of unfinished work on the jets rolling out in Renton is still growing.

Internal Boeing documents showing detailed operational data viewed by the Seattle Times indicate that on Aug. 30, Boeing Renton was roughly 26,600 jobs behind schedule. A week later, on Thursday Sept. 6, that total had swelled to about 31,000 jobs behind schedule.

One worker said Boeing has set a
