Model Aviators to hold ‘Fun Fly’ Sept. 23

Look! Up in the sky! It’s… a model airplane!

Next weekend will provide an ample opportunity for that sentiment to take place with the Chino Valley Model Aviators holding its 12th annual Steve Crowe Fun Fly. Last year saw a pretty good crowd and the hope is for the event to be a record breaker, said Event Coordinator Marc Robbins.

New this year will be catered shredded pork sliders from Home Slice Pizza and a professional model airplane pilot, who is a member of the club, Robbins said.

“He makes his living flying in competition and also teaching, giving instruction,” he said. “He’s going to be putting on a demo flight.”

Held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, the show is mainly about giving people in the area a look at what the club does, Robbins said. As such, it’s going to be a full day of action in the air with planes up all the time so people visiting have something to look at.

There is no landing fee, though donations are appreciated and all proceeds benefit the Chino Valley Food Bank. All aircraft types and flying styles will be there, in addition to helicopter, turbine and 3D flight demonstrations at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. with open

Hurricane Florence live updates: Category 2 storm barrels toward Carolina coast

Hurricane Florence is steadily churning toward the Carolinas and could impact residents as far south as Georgia or north into Virginia as it makes landfall late Thursday or early Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Read more trending news

Millions of people in its path are now under a hurricane warning or watch. Experts predict the storm will dump as much as 40 inches of rain in some areas and cause storm surges as high as 13 feet.

What is a storm surge and why is it dangerous?

The NHC is forecasting Florence will slow or stall as it reaches the coast, generating winds fueling “life-threatening” storm surge, and producing rainfall causing “catastrophic” flooding.

“This is shaping up to be a very dangerous scenario, as Florence nears our coast and stalls, unprecedented and life-threatening flooding may unfold,” a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C. wrote.

Pedaling is a passion for doctor with 22 bikes

Not long ago, Dr. Daniel Marks rented a garage at the La Costa Glen retirement community where he has lived for the past two years with his wife, Judy.

The garage isn’t for his lime-green Fiat, which he parks on the street. It’s for his nearly two dozen bicycles, a collection he downsized from a high of 50 several years ago.

The retired general practitioner has been an avid cyclist for more than 40 years, so these bikes aren’t for show. At age 78, he still pedals more than 100 miles a week and he enjoys riding them all.

For each ride, Marks chooses a different bike, depending on whether he’s planning to climb hills, speed on a flat course or take a leisurely touring trip with weighted packs. He keeps a calendar of which bike he rides when and for how many miles so that each one sets rubber to road every month or so.

“For me, cycling down the road is like being in a low-flying airplane where everything’s speeding by,” he said. “There’s so much to see and it’s a great feeling to do something under your own power.”

Marks got his first bicycle at age 7 in his native Detroit, where he said the cycling season is sharply limited by harsh weather so riding days were all the more precious.

“I loved the freedom of just getting out and riding a great distance around the block to go buy candy,” he said.

He gave up biking to play baseball in high school and

Tax Change Helps Executives Afford Pricier Planes

The recent changes to the tax code are giving business executives a new perk: the opportunity to deduct the entirety of a corporate-jet purchase.

President Trump signed more than 100 changes to the U.S. tax code into law at the end of last year. Among them: The price of a new or used airplane purchased by a company can be a 100% write-off against its earnings.

That…

Price tag for Sea-Tac’s new International Arrivals Facility soars to almost $1 billion

The latest update on the budget-busting International Arrivals Facility at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport states that the new facility will open eight months later than originally planned and that its cost has swelled to almost $1 billion.

After a Port of Seattle staff report in April conceded big cost overruns and schedule delays, Port Commissioners appointed an independent review panel to assess the status of the project and make recommendations to get it finished. At that time, the budget had blown past the Port’s earliest 2013 estimate of $300 million and the original 2015 contract estimate of $608 million to reach $830 million, and the project was running five months late.

On Tuesday, the review panel report presented to Port Commissioners added another three months’ delay — a schedule it describes as “achievable but aggressive” — and gave a new final estimated cost that was $138 million higher again at just over $968 million.

In an interview, review panel chair John Okamoto said his team has determined this to be “a reasonable cost” given the “supercharged” construction costs in the region and a substantial increase over time in the scope of the project. He said further budget increases are not likely.

“There are reasons to have confidence that these projections are now good projections,” said Okamoto,

Awesome Looking 3D Printed RC Plane Is Full Of Design Considerations

Designing and 3D printing RC planes offer several interesting challenges, and so besides being awesome looking and a fast flier, [localfiend’s] Northern Pike build is definitely worth a look. Some details can be found by wading through this forum but there’s also quite a bit on his Thingiverse page.

Tongue-and-groove joint

Naturally, for an RC plane, weight is an issue. When’s the last time you used 0% infill, as he does for some parts? Those parts also have only one perimeter, making this thin-walled-construction indeed. He’s even cut out circles on the spars inside the wings. For extra strength, a cheap carbon fiber arrow from Walmart serves as a spar in the main wing section. Adding more strength yet, most parts go together with tongue-and-groove assembly, making for a stronger join than there would be otherwise. This slotted join also acts as a spar where it’s done for two wing sections. To handle higher temperatures, he recommends PETG, ABS, ASA, Polycarbonate, and nylon for the motor mount and firewall while the rest of the plane can be printed with PLA.

As you can tell from the videos below, [localfiend’s] flier is a high-performance 3D printed machine. But such machines don’t have to be relegated to the air as this RC jet boat demonstrates. Though some do hover on a thin cushion of air.

When launching his first flight, he learned that he didn’t need to toss it too hard.

We’re
