Review: ‘Science Fair’ is a winner, even in a year of extraordinary documentaries

Even in a year of extraordinary documentaries like “RBG,” “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and “Three Identical Strangers,” “Science Fair” is something special.

Winner of audience awards at both Sundance and South by Southwest (not an easy accomplishment), this infectious and exuberant film wins you over by focusing on the enthusiasm and enviable good spirits of the smart and engaging young people who compete in “the Olympics of science fairs.”

If you want to increase your faith in the future of humanity and have a rollicking good time doing it, there is no better place to go.

Crisply directed by Cristina Costantini and Darren Foster, “Science Fair” focuses on the 2017 Los Angeles-hosted edition of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, familiarly known as ISEF.

In existence since 1942, ISEF presently attracts roughly 7 million initial competitors who duke it out in 425 qualifying fairs around the world.

This group is winnowed down to 1,700 high school student finalists from close to 80 countries, competing in 22 categories but all hoping they walk off with the coveted Gordon E. Moore award for the best project.

Costantini knows this world intimately — she is a former competitor who placed fourth in her category as a high school freshman — and the film’s insider sensibility benefits from her knowledge.

Costantini and Foster, who first worked together on “Death by Fentanyl,” a much darker and very different documentary on the opioid crisis, turn out to have impeccable instincts for the intimate and the warmly comic that gives this film

4-H invites prospective members, volunteers to open house

The Somerset County 4-H Program will host an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ted Blum 4-H Center, 310 Milltown Road, Bridgewater.

Representatives from a variety of 4-H clubs throughout the county will be at the event to speak about their groups. The event will include hands-on activities and demonstrations to help children find clubs that interest them. New members will be able to sign up during the open house. The Somerset County 4-H is looking for adults as well as children to get involved with the organization; parent volunteers are needed for local clubs.

The nonformal, education program offers a variety of programming for youth, but a large focus is the 4-H clubs, which are led by adult volunteers. Clubs focus on subject matter related to the interests of the 4-Hers. Some examples of clubs in Somerset County include the arts such as theater arts and Chinese culture, STEM-focused projects such as rocketry and model airplanes, poultry, dog, and horse, robotics and computers.

“Our 4-H members pledge their heads, hands, hearts and health to the betterment of their community and we are looking for new members and volunteers to help make Somerset County a better place,” said Lisa Rothenburger, 4-H agent.

The 4-H youth program uses a “learn-by-doing approach that enables youth in grades K through 13 to develop the knowledge, attitude and skills they need to become competent, caring and contributing citizens in their community and the world.”

The Tragic Tale Of The A-10 Thunderhog Storm Chasing Jet That Almost Was

The biggest problem the program would face wasn’t technological, though. Instead, it had to do with how exactly the aircraft would be operated and how much it would actually cost to do so. With the original grant now looking woefully insufficient, the idea that the aircraft may have to be operated and maintained to the USAF’s standards was crushing. The issue was that nobody aside from the USAF had ever owned and operated an A-10, and especially a highly modified one that flies through storms. Getting everyone to agree on just how the aircraft would be maintained and flown became increasingly contentious and convoluted. But the aftermath of a number of cataclysmic shifts at the Naval Postgraduate School, including weathering an internal scandal among its leadership and major changes to how it managed cooperative research programs, would lead to the school dropping out of the program altogether. This served a crushing blow to the already troubled program.

With this major change to the program’s architecture, the issues with operating the A-10 would go from complex to nearly insurmountable. The Navy’s involvement was key in the USAF loaning the jet out for the mission in the first place. Under that regime, at least the DoD was still managing the program and the plane’s operation, to a certain degree. The question of who would, or even could, fill the Naval Postgraduate School’s shoes became an increasingly pressing and downright critical question.

By late 2016, the publicity around the program had

Historical plane visits Lubbock, experts share experiences

The B-25 plane used during World War II will be on display at Lubbock International Airport by the Silent Wings Museum from Monday to Friday.

As one of the 34 planes that can still fly out of the 10,000 produced, the B-25 tours around the country out of the Arizona Commemorative Air Force.

“Our mission is to preserve, restore and educate people about the role aviation played in U.S. combat history,” Corey Paul, marketing and communications manager for the museum, said. “Every summer our planes go on an international air tour and deliver history to home towns across the U.S. and Canada.”

The plane, called “Maid in the Shade,” took part in 15 combat missions in Corsica, Italy.

“After her time in Italy, she came back home and was no longer used,” Marty Post said. “Before we got her, she was a crop duster. She was in the boneyard but we got her in 1985 to restore her. It took from 1985 to 2009 to put her back together. We restored the wings, replaced the engine and most of the original parts.”

The plane is painted with the same paint style as it had in 1944. The nose art on the front also is accurate to the times.

“We came up with the name for the plane as it was in the shed,” he said. “She was made in the shade so we decided on ‘Maid in the Shade.’”

Along with “Maid in the Shade,” the Arizona Commemorative Air Force tours with the bomber involved in the

New director helming Aspen Higher Learning Flight Academy

Luke Murphy, a longtime Aspen native, has taken the controls of the Aspen Higher Learning Flight Academy following the recent departure of former director Greg Roark. Murphy teaches Aspen middle and high school students in the classroom, and is also a certified flight instructor.

“Basically, for the last 25 years, flying had just been an expensive hobby,” said Murphy, who started his new position in August. “I saw this as an opportunity to move into aviation full time and pass on my love of flying to high school students.”

Murphy, who began working at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport when he was 14 and learned to fly as soon as he was able, was working on his instruction certificate when he was contacted by Mike Pearce. Pearce, who is a member of the new AHLFA board, told him that the academy needed a replacement for Greg Roark, who originally started the program four years ago.

“It was really his vision that started, not only the program here at the high school, but also the nonprofit out at the airport,” Murphy said. He went on to explain that Roark’s departure concerned members of the community who were unsure if the program would continue without him.

Robert Holton, another member of the new board, said in an email that he had heard rumors the program was done when Roark left. Holton went on to say that he’s happy to see Murphy brought on and is energized by all of the new ideas

Robert B. Nachbar, 93, oral surgeon, sportsman, woodworker and pilot

Aug. 23, 1925 — Sept. 18, 2018

Dr. Robert B. Nachbar was a respected and accomplished oral surgeon, but that was just one facet of his personality.

He loved camping in remote parts of northern Ontario and Maine, where he would fly fish with flies he tied himself. He was a competitive shooter and enjoyed duck hunting. He made wood furniture, duck decoys and what his son Richard Nachbar called “museum quality” model airplanes. He also liked full-size airplanes, getting his pilot’s license and taking the family on sightseeing trips in a leased Cessna.

Dr. Nachbar died Sept. 18, 2018, in Beechwood Continuing Care. He was 93 and had lived in the Blocher Homes in Williamsville for more than three years.

Born in Buffalo, he was the oldest child of Norman and Thelma Weber Nachbar. The family moved to Williamsville in the 1930s and eventually had three more children.

Dr. Nachbar was a graduate of Williamsville High School.

He had completed two years of dental school before enlisting in the U.S. Army on July 9, 1945, so he was assigned to the the 30th Infantry Medical Detachment. Serving in Germany, he provided dental care to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and civilians in clinics, his son said.

Dr. Nachbar was discharged on Jan. 19, 1947. An avid photographer, he brought home enough photos to fill multiple albums, and often told stories about his wartime experiences, his son said.

On Sept. 20, 1950, he married Judith Ann Jaeger in Amherst Community Church. They had four children, Robert Jr., Pauline, Richard
