Rosemount High School junior completes first solo flight

She completed her maneuvers, circled back and landed.

For Hansen, who has somewhere close to 14 hours of flight time under the watchful eye of an instructor, the sheer act of navigating a plane from ground to air and back again had become somewhat unremarkable.

This time was no different, except for one thing — she was all on her own.

“I went into it thinking it was just an ordinary lesson,” Hansen said of her first solo flight on Sept. 18. “Then all of a sudden my flight instructor just kind of said, ‘Hey, why don’t you let me out and try by yourself.’ He didn’t give me any forewarning, except for when he was getting out of the plane.”

Hansen’s upbringing may have contributed to her love of aviation.

Her father, Greg, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and her sister Sydney, who graduate from Rosemount High School last year, is in her first year at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“We have a bunch of model planes all over the house,” she said. “I’ve always looked at those, especially when I was a kid … I had model airplanes in my room.”

Every time her dad switched planes — he flies commercially now after flying fighter jets for the Navy — he brought home a poster of the cockpit layout, which Hansen continually hung in her room.

Her family also frequented the Oshkosh, Wis., air show.

“I just remember one time I went with my grandparents and I saw the F-22 take

Pilots land from around the world

On Saturday, 30 pilots from Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico — even Russia — flew to Bartlesville Municipal Airport for the first gathering of its kind featuring only Bellanca aircraft.

The Fly-In was an opportunity for the Bellanca pilots to share lifesaving knowledge and just have some fun.

“We’ve got three vans and we’re taking people around. Yesterday we went to Woolaroc. When we schedule things, we plan things for the wives too,” Victor Catalanotto said.

Several of the wives visited the Mercantile in Pawhuska as well.

Janet Dunbar, who sponsored the event with her husband, Steve, said, that soon after they rented a hanger at the Bartlesville Municipal Airport, the idea of a fly-in began to take shape.

“We’re in a Viking’s pilot chat group and they said, it was a good place for a fly-in,” Dunbar said.

Theresa Lindinger said, “my husband, John, said, ‘I’m going,’ and he flew in from southeast Nebraska. We’re all meeting for the first time, and we’re becoming friends. Our husbands all know one another from the blog. It’s a nice little community.”

The pilot from Moscow, Ivan Posstnikov, flew to Dallas/Fort Worth on a commercial flight, and and then caught a ride to the Bartlesville Fly-in with Brad Donner from Denver.

However, due to cloudy weather, arrangements were being made to return Posstnikov to Dallas/Fort Worth with another pilot, Omeed Alaverdi, who owned a 1976 Bellanca Viking.

“We all like to help one another out,” Catalanotto said.

Boeing Beats Lockheed for $9.2 Billion Air Force Trainer Program

Boeing Co. defeated Lockheed Martin Corp. to win its third prize in a recent flurry of defense contracts, snaring a U.S. Air Force contest valued at as much as $9.2 billion to build training jets to hone the flying skills of future aviators.

The 351 to 475 training aircraft and 120 ground-based training systems would be produced at Boeing’s St. Louis plant through 2034, the Air Force announced Thursday. The service is initially issuing a contract for $813 million, including engineering and manufacturing development.

With the win, Boeing swept the trio of high-profile contracts awarded before the Sept. 30 close of the federal fiscal year. The aerospace giant also scored a potential $13 billion franchise to build MQ-25 carrier-based refueling drones for the U.S. Navy, and with Leonardo SpA jointly won a $2.38 billion contest to replace a fleet of Huey helicopters guarding the Air Force’s intercontinental ballistic missile sites.

The victories end a string of disappointments for Boeing, from the 2015 stealth-bomber competition that went to Northrop Grumman Corp., and the joint strike fighter contest won by Lockheed’s F-35 in 2001.
