There Are Just Three Words to Describe Mythical New Planes

One of the most aggravating parts of traveling is when you arrive at the airport with a middle seat assignment, praying for mercy to the aisle or window seat gods. That feeling of anticipation and dread, waiting in line at the check-in counter, is torturous. And heaven help you if you dared to buy a basic economy seat, which won’t let you choose a seat prior to arrival at the airport. You’re basically doomed to separate from anyone else in your party because you bought basic economy and you should be punished. Seat selection is a lot these days.

Which is why news of a plane that has eliminated middle seats altogether comes as a welcome beacon of light and hope from the desolate 24-hour news cycle. Just imagine spending a 12-hour flight with your friend or love without having to get up every hour to let the grumpy geriatric with smelly feet get up to pee. Imagine never having to fear being seated between, like, two unaccompanied crying babies. Imagine two sparkling rows of aisle and window seats, like a metaphor for some heretofore unknown utopia.

The new planes come courtesy of “aerospace company” Embraer, which designed the E190-E2 aircraft with comfort in mind. “Preserving passenger personal space is the goal,” said Rodrigo Silva e Souza, VP of marketing for Embraer Commercial Aviation, which is something that no one in aviation has before said, ever.

At the moment, one model of the new plane is taking

Why Aren’t There Electric Airplanes?

By Venkat Viswanathan, Carnegie Mellon University; Shashank Sripad, Carnegie Mellon University, and William Leif Fredericks, Carnegie Mellon University

As electric cars and trucks appear increasingly on U.S. highways, it raises the question: When will commercially viable electric vehicles take to the skies? There are a number of ambitious efforts to build electric-powered airplanes, including regional jets and planes that can cover longer distances. Electrification is starting to enable a type of air travel that many have been hoping for, but haven’t seen yet – a flying car.

A key challenge in building electric aircraft involves how much energy can be stored in a given amount of weight of the on-board energy source. Although the best batteries store about 40 times less energy per unit of weight than jet fuel, a greater share of their energy is available to drive motion. Ultimately, for a given weight, jet fuel contains about 14 times more usable energy than a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery.

That makes batteries relatively heavy for aviation. Airline companies are already worried about weight – imposing fees on luggage in part to limit how much planes have to carry. Road vehicles can handle heavier batteries, but there are similar concerns. Our research group has analyzed the weight-energy tradeoff in electric pickup trucks and tractor-trailer or semi-trucks.

From electric trucks to flying vehicles

We based our research on a very accurate description of the energy required to move the vehicle

Pro scout: Against Rams and Saints, Bears ‘have a chance’

We spoke with a pro scouting director from another team this week, one who has previously worked with Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy. When Nagy was hired, the director gave the move an emphatic thumbs-up even though he and Nagy only worked together briefly in the past.

“They got a good coach,” he told Pro Football Weekly at the time. “Everyone who worked with him longer raved about him, and I felt pretty good about him having what it takes to take over his own team after learning from one of the best [Andy Reid].”

That was then. This is now: The Bears are one of the most improved teams in football. They’re currently out in front by a game and a half in the NFC North for first place. They have the third-best record overall in the conference. At 8-3, the playoffs are not really the question for the Bears — but rather, how far can they go?

We thought we would revisit with our director acquaintance now to see how his feelings and views had changed after watching the Bears to this point. And specifically, what he thought Nagy was doing so well in earning as many victories in 11 games as his two predecessors, Marc Trestman (16 games) and John Fox (24), did in a far longer time frame.

“I’ve seen a lot of them [the Bears],” the director said. “Nagy is doing a great job. He is allowing his guys to be the best version of themselves.
