Pratt & Whitney Canada Receives Transport Canada Approval for Significant Cycle Limit Increases on PT6A-140 …

RENO, NEVADA, December 3, 2018 – Pratt Whitney Canada, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), today announced it has received approval from Transport Canada to increase cycle limits on its PT6A-140, -140A and -140AG engines. These increases – made possible through comprehensive parts testing and model analyses – will extend the life of Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) parts such as the power and compressor turbine disks and the impeller.

“We are committed to exploring and developing innovative solutions that keep our customers flying longer and at reduced operating and maintenance costs,” said Nicholas Kanellias, Vice President, General Aviation at Pratt Whitney Canada. “For the vast majority of PT6A-140 series operators, these extensions will push the requirement to replace LCF parts further into the future.”

An engine cycle is counted every time an engine is started, flown and then shutdown. An abbreviated cycle is counted when an engine remains running between flights. The cycle limits for the PT6A-140-series engines have now been increased by up to 60 percent for the following parts: from 12,000 cycles to 16,000 cycles for the power turbine disk, from 10,000 cycles to 16,000 cycles for the compressor turbine disk and from 19,000 cycles to 29,000 cycles for the impeller. Also as it pertains to the power turbine disk, the number of abbreviated cycles needed to count as a full cycle has increased from two to five.

“These numbers tell a compelling story for the maintenance costs of the PT6A-140 engine series,” says Kanellias. “For PT6A-140-series

MIT engineers fly first-ever plane with no moving parts

Since the first airplane took flight over 100 years ago, virtually every aircraft in the sky has flown with the help of moving parts such as propellers, turbine blades, or fans that produce a persistent, whining buzz.

Now MIT engineers have built and flown the first-ever plane with no moving parts. Instead of propellers or turbines, the light aircraft is powered by an “ionic wind” — a silent but mighty flow of ions that is produced aboard the plane, and that generates enough thrust to propel the plane over a sustained, steady flight.

Unlike turbine-powered planes, the aircraft does not depend on fossil fuels to fly. And unlike propeller-driven drones, the new design is completely silent.

“This is the first-ever sustained flight of a plane with no moving parts in the propulsion system,” says Steven Barrett, associate professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT. “This has potentially opened new and unexplored possibilities for aircraft which are quieter, mechanically simpler, and do not emit combustion emissions.”

He expects that in the near-term, such ion wind propulsion systems could be used to fly less noisy drones. Further out, he envisions ion propulsion paired with more conventional combustion systems to create more fuel-efficient, hybrid passenger planes and other large aircraft.

Barrett and his team at MIT have published their results today in the journal Nature.

Hobby crafts

Barrett says the inspiration for the team’s ion plane comes partly from the movie and television series, “Star Trek,” which he watched avidly as a kid. He was particularly drawn to the futuristic shuttlecrafts

RC Planes Fly Indoors at St. Ben’s [VIDEO]

ST. JOSEPH– A group of flying enthusiasts gathered inside the field house at the College of St. Benedict this weekend.

The Northstar Fliers hosted their second Indoor Fly event of the season on Sunday morning. The event gives local clubs a chance to come together and fly their planes, helicopters, and quad-copters despite the winter weather.

The club’s Social Media Manager Anthony Laabs has been flying since 2003. He says it was his dad who helped him get into the hobby.

My dad was always into model railroading, so we were always in the local hobby shop, and I always saw the airplanes. I always did the plastic models where you glue them together and they don’t fly. My dad bought me my first [electric] one on clearance at Wal-Mart, just a little two-motor. It flew just as far as you could throw it.

The Northstar Fliers are based out of Holdingford, but anyone who wants to participate is welcome. Laabs says joining is simple.

You need two things to fly inside here: the Academy of Model Aeronautics membership, which basically covers the insurance side and it just allows you to fly at any of the club events. If you’re flying at a club, you’re gonna need AMA. And then we have an indoor membership for our club that’s $15 and then it’s $5 a time.

The indoor flying events will be held at St. Ben’s

The Celtics are helping raise awareness about a serious shortage in the US

The third annual “JetBlue Rookie Flight Crew” program took off Wednesday morning at Winthrop Middle School, where the Celtics and JetBlue once again launched an educational campaign to inform a select group of 30 students about STEM-related opportunities within a workforce suffering from low supply and high demand.

“The aviation industry over the next 15 years or so is going to have a lot of people retiring,” JetBlue pilot Becca Petro told Boston.com. “Pilots have a mandatory retirement age of 65, and we don’t have nearly the people coming in that are going to be retiring.”

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the number of pilots in the United States has decreased by 30 percent over the past three decades. Petro, who started flying at 19 because her dad was a pilot, attributed the shortage to cost as well as a lack of awareness.

“A lot of people don’t know it’s an option,” she said. “A lot of these kids have no idea that they can just go to a local airport and take some lessons. They don’t necessarily have to go to college or go into the military.”

If the impending shortage isn’t addressed, Petro expects fewer flights and destinations to be available for consumers. Through “JetBlue Rookie Flight Crew” and similar programs, Petro hopes students can gain the necessary exposure and access to the industry.

“Everybody always says the kids are the future,” added Celtics center Aron Baynes, who was on hand at Winthrop Middle School

Family donates man’s airplane model collection to NAS-Kingsville

Kingsville (KIII News) — One Houston man’s collection of model airplanes now has a new home on board the Naval Air Station Kingsville.

Each airplane represents the history of naval aviation.

The donation comes from the family of Robert Hardie.

It was back in October of last year when the Hardie family contacted the base about donating the collection after Hardie died.

Officials told 3News that the 200 models show aircrafts that Kingsville-trained pilots flew during WWII.

“I watched my husband model and collect for many years, and to see them all displayed like this is very emotional and very exciting. They’ve done a wonderful job,” said Maria Hardie.

The models, which are worth more than $10,000, will be displayed in a custom-made display case for many years to come.
