Eugene students spend Saturday morning handing out toys to children in need – The Register

For many teens, Saturday is a day for sleep and relaxation.

But not for a handful of Willamette Leadership Academy students who volunteered for the Lane County Toys for Tots program Saturday morning.

The group of eight students helped distribute some of the about 18,000 to 20,000 toys to families in the Eugene-Springfield area, according to the Lane County Toys for Tots program. The high school students said they felt like giving back was the right thing to do.

“I wanted to volunteer because I knew it would make a lot of children happy and actually have gifts for Christmas and I just wanted to be a part of that,” said Isaiah Alvord, 13.

Alvord said he’d experienced Christmas without gifts before.

“I’ve been that kid,” he said. “And it was really sad.”

The Lane County Toys for Tots program typically receives about 15,000 gifts to give to others by Dec. 1, but was experiencing a shortage earlier this year and had only collected about half that amount. A group of Madison Middle School students donated to the collection with some hand-made model planes last month and helped to get word out to the community that Toys for Tots was in need of some assistance.

Kate Klontz, a program director at the military-style charter school, said she didn’t really expect anyone to sign up to volunteer last weekend.

“I didn’t make an announcement or anything, I just put the sign-up sheet outside my door and was surprised at how many students were interested,” Klontz said. “I

Adding to the beauty of the Kenyon scene is the Christmas tree atop the Farmers Elevator building. Standing 13 feet high and sparkling with nearly 90 colored lights the tree is visible for many miles. At night when darkness blacks out the building it looks as though it is hanging in mid-air. Albion Rodde and Henry Barsness erected and decorated the tree.

Elementary primary grades presented “The Magic Christmas Bell” a one act operetta. Speaking parts were ably handled by Stephen Langness as Santa Claus and Jacqueline Jones and LaDonna Aaker as Wimble and Nimble.

Tesla’s Leasing Partner Isn’t Doing So Hot: Report

Photo: Getty Images

The Morning ShiftAll your daily car news in one convenient place. Isn’t your time more important?

Tesla’s leasing partner unable to fund leases, Hyundai and Kia owners taking the automakers to court, General Motors’ planned electric and autonomous overhaul, continuing problems between Renault and Nissan, and more job cuts. All of this and more in The Morning Shift for Monday, Dec. 17, 2018.

1st Gear: Tesla’s Partner Might Be Having Trouble Funding Leases

Automotive News has a fascinating story on Tesla’s leasing partner this week, which is apparently having so much trouble funding leases that it hasn’t been able to do so in several months. The company, MUSA Auto Finance, is a Dallas business that began in 2016 and hooked up with Tesla over the summer to manage leases for the Model S sedan and Model X crossover. But it’s only taken a few months for the company to become overwhelmed.

MUSA told dealer customers in an October email that it couldn’t finance leases any longer after the new Tesla partnership increased its leasing volume by six between August and September, Automotive News says. Lease approvals still aren’t happening, the outlet reports, leaving dealer partners without funding for the leases and “some” customers without their leased cars.

Here’s what’s going on, according to Automotive News:

MUSA’s sudden turn of fortune created snarls that Dave Guttenberg, owner of Automotive Imports,

Dreaming of a Beige Christmas? You’re in Luck. Storm-Free Into Monday Midday

Dreaming of a Beige Christmas? You’re In Luck!

“Here’s the thing, models suggest a negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation in January, which implies lighter jet stream winds aloft and greater odds of bitter, Canadian air penetrating into the USA. But a weak El Nino developing in the Pacific may sustain a split flow in the jet stream, tilting the odds toward more frequent puffs of milder, Pacific air! And what about the MJO, the Madden Julian Oscillation?”

It’s no wonder I don’t get invited to many holiday parties.

So many factors to consider when contemplating the winter to come. Just remember, when it comes to a 3-month weather outlook, there’s no such thing as an ‘expert’. It’s a little like predicting where the NASDAQ Index will be in late February. Good luck with that.

Now that we’ve lost much of our snow, the sun’s energy can go into heating the air. 40s are possible today
and Wednesday, before we finally cool off.

The East Coast gets slapped by another big rain storm late week, but it’s a generally dry pattern for Minnesota through Christmas Eve. ECWMF (European) guidance hints at a little slush on Christmas Day; another snowy coating one week from Thursday?

Let the record show it’s not my fault. Hey, I’m dreaming of a beige Christmas.

Going, Going… The Geocolor midday image from GOES-East on Monday shows where there’s a little snow still left on the ground; more snowcover south of MSP, but lot’s of brown

A Christmas drone? Raleigh sets policy on flying in parks

If you or someone you know gets a drone for Christmas, or already has one, the City of Raleigh wants to help you find somewhere to fly it.

The City Council this month approved a policy that sets where and when people can fly drones in the city’s parks. The city parks department has followed up by creating a website that spells out the rules and provides a map showing where it’s OK to take off and land.

“We felt the timing was good with the holidays,” said Scott Payne, an assistant director of the city’s parks department. “Because this will be a popular gift, and we want to say ‘Here’s a place you can fly.’ ”

Like electric scooters, recreational drones emerged with little warning and quickly became popular, while local governments struggled to figure out how to regulate their use in parks and other public spaces. At the direction of the City Council, the Raleigh parks department and its advisory board began crafting a policy more than two years and consulted drone enthusiasts and the Federal Aviation Administration, among others.

The final “unmanned aerial systems” policy allows people to fly drones, remote-controlled airplanes and model rockets weighing less than .88 pounds in all city parks and recreation areas, except for nature preserves, wetland centers, cemeteries and over lakes. UAS larger than .88 pounds would be limited to large open spaces in six parks: Baileywick, Eastgate, Spring Forest, Marsh Creek, Dorothea Dix
