A model retirement in store for this Maryland doctor

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — When Dr. Allen Ditto retires on Jan. 31, he has plans for the fine motor and problem-solving skills he honed during his almost 40-year medical career.

He will tackle the collection of 4,000 models — mostly airplanes — he’s stockpiled in the basement of his Fountain Head home in Hagerstown.

He enjoyed the hobby as a kid. Even though he doesn’t love flying in planes, Ditto said he is “fascinated with the engineering of them.”

Since becoming a doctor, he said, he had time to purchase models, decals and supplies over the years, which he referred to as “shopping therapy,” but no time to put them together.

During his career, Allen’s put together four models, estimating they take an average of 100 hours each.

When Ditto visited his patients in the hospital, he generally worked 110 hours a week. Around 2005, his average work week dropped to about 85 hours.

With Allen retiring and less income coming in, his wife, Judy Ditto, gave him a Jan. 1 deadline to end purchases related to models

She is not retiring from her job as accounting manager of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, for which she has worked since May 2012.

Judy looks forward to coming home to meals cooked by her husband, who has been learning to cook through Blue Apron meal kits and is interested in taking cooking classes in Frederick.

“I bought myself an Instant Pot and sous vide,” Allen said, referring to a process of cooking by vacuum sealing.

He also is taking over the house

Plain facts about 45 presidents of USA

Plain facts about 45 presidents of USA

World leaders are almost always rendered into history with stories of inspiring heroism and tragic failings. And while you may be well-versed in textbook facts about them, you may have never heard of some of their pet peeves, quirks and pastimes.
There’s a whole treasure trove of wild, wonderful and just plain weird facts about the 45 presidents of the USA, even though they had no great impact on history as we know it.
First in, first out (FIFO); George Washington had terrible, decaying teeth so he wore dentures made from hippopotamus ivory, bone, animal and human teeth, lead, brass screws and gold wire. Some records suggest that those teeth came from the mouths of slaves and impoverished people.
Thought friendly in their personal lives, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were great political rivals. On his deathbed, Adams is believed to have uttered, “Thomas Jefferson still survives,” in a final act of rivalry. Little did he know that Jefferson had actually died hours earlier. As fate would have it, both Adams and Jefferson died on the same day, July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The last surviving Founding Father, James Monroe also died on July 4th, five years later. The Fourth of July is also the birthday of a president: Calvin Coolidge in 1872.
Andrew Jackson’s pet parrot began shouting obscenities at his funeral and had to be kicked out. The president

The Things John Bogle Taught Us: Humility, Ethics and Simplicity

Carl Richards writes the Sketch Guy column for The New York Times. He never met Mr. Bogle, but found inspiration in his life’s work. He offered this sketch, and the words below.

Making something simple sounds easy. Turns out it’s not.

The world is full of simple hacks that are not even worth the hashtag often applied to them, but the real priceless jewels of simplicity, as Mr. Bogle once put it, are uncovered only after toiling about in the maddening nuance of complexity.

You consider your options. Listen to counterarguments. Push some edges.

My job is to find those jewels of simplicity and share them as sketches. Every once in a while, I get it right. And when I do it’s because John Bogle, he of the elegant and downright simple index fund, gave me permission. I just have to do the work of cutting through the complexity first.

The ethos of the financial services industry was far different when Manisha Thakor began her career 25 years ago. “The drumbeat on Wall Street was Gordon Gekko’s painfully memorable mantra of ‘Greed is good,’” said Ms. Thakor, now vice president of financial wellbeing at Brighton Jones, a wealth management firm. “‘More’ was the word of the decade.”
