Scientists recreate tiny version of Rodin’s Thinker using 3D method

First invented in the 1980s by Chuck Hull, an engineer and physicist, 3D printing technology – also called additive manufacturing – is the process of making an object by depositing material, one layer at a time.

Similarly to how an inkjet printer adds individual dots of ink to form an image, a 3D printer adds material where it is needed, based on a digital file.

Many conventional manufacturing processes involved cutting away excess materials to make a part, and this can lead to wastage of up to 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms) for every one pound of useful material, according to the Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

By contrast, with some 3D printing processes about 98 per cent of the raw material is used in the finished part, and the method can be used to make small components using plastics and metal powders, with some experimenting with chocolate and other food, as well as biomaterials similar to human cells.

3D printers have been sued to manufacture everything from prosthetic limbs to robots, and the process follows these basic steps:

· Creating a 3D blueprint using computer-aided design (CAD) software

· Preparing the printer, including refilling the raw materials such as plastics, metal powders and binding solutions.

· Initiating the printing process via the machine, which builds the object.

· 3D printing processes can vary, but material extrusion is the most common, and it works like a glue gun: the printing material is heated until it liquefies and

No pressure: Sam Bleiweis flies with SCANG to watch F-16 aerial refueling ahead of Super Bowl 53

“This is a mission that’s going on 24/7, 365,” said Lt. Colonel Jeff Beckham, who is a SCANG F-16 Pilot. “Imagine the pressure of being in combat where the fighter is trying to get back on scene to drop some bombs, or there’s weather to deal with or something like that.”

Analysis | Why the Superjumbo A380 Airplane Faces a New Crisis

Airbus SE appeared to have secured a long-term future for the world’s biggest passenger plane, the A380 superjumbo, when it agreed last year to sell as many as 36 of them to Dubai-based Emirates in an order worth $16 billion at list prices. Now the model’s very survival is once again in doubt as the airline considers a switch to smaller jets after failing to agree a deal with engine makers to power the plane.

1. Why does this deal matter so much?

The double-decker A380’s cavernous interior is a hit with customers, and airlines regularly make it a focus of ad campaigns. But even the biggest carriers have stopped short of buying the jet in large numbers. Top European operators such as British Airways have a dozen or so, and Singapore Airlines has ordered twice that number. But only Emirates has truly bought into the A380, ordering 162 aircraft that are the linchpin of a global hub strategy that’s made it the world’s biggest long-haul airline. Lose the latest deal from the Mideast giant, and a plane that’s been in production for little more than a decade could face being wound down.

2. Why aren’t the engine companies clamoring for the business?

While the size of the Emirates contract might sound impressive, 36 planes is small fry by aviation standards — and not enough to warrant the sort of investment required to deliver significant improvements in fuel burn. Though Emirates had reluctantly accepted that its A380s wouldn’t get a wholly new engine,

Mads Mikkelsen Attempts Survival in ‘Arctic’; Robert Schwartzman Spots ‘The Unicorn’ – Specialty B.O. Preview

With the Sundance Film Festival coming to a close, Oscar nominations out and Specialty distributors looking ahead, this weekend will have more new limited releases than the last few, post-holidays weekends. Bleecker Street is opening Joe Penna’s Arctic starring Mads Mikkelsen as a man stranded near the North Pole following a plane crash. The Orchard is opening The Unicorn by Robert Schwartzman, who hosted an event at Sundance last weekend. Starring Nick Rutherford who also co-wrote, The Unicorn will head out to theaters this weekend before going on-demand next week. The ‘widest’ Specialty roll out on this continent this weekend will be Bollywood’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga from FIP, which will take the title by director Shelly Chopra Dhar to 192 locations in North America. And Danish filmmaker Mads Brügger was at the Sundance Film Festival with doc Cold Case Hammarskjöld, but the director has also been promoting his narrative comedy The Saint Bernard Syndicate, which opens Friday via Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures.

Among other titles heading to theaters in limited release are Rising Star Entertainment’s The Gandhi Murder, focusing on the events that lead up to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and Abramorama’s Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, with footage from a 1970 concert festival featuring the legendary artist.

How to 3D print your own Rodin

For all the hype over three-dimensional printing, it’s done little to revolutionize the world of manufacturing.

An innovation out of two Bay Area labs could change that.

The new method creates near-instantaneous objects that are smoother, more complex and far more elegant than current 3D printers produce. Called Computed Axial Lithography, it was conceived by scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and UC Berkeley.

Imagine a speedy replica of Michelangelo’s graceful Pietà, rather than a tedious version of Athens’ blocky Parthenon.

“It’s a new kind of 3D printing that creates objects all at once, rather than layer by layer. And they’re non-symmetrical, with a lot of detail,” said Hayden Taylor, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley and senior author of the research paper, published in Thursday’s issue of the journal Science.

Here’s why conventional 3D printing can be a disappointment: It creates a “stair-step” effect of external lines because layers of molten plastic are stacked one upon the other.

While cheaper than injection molding, conventional 3D printing is no match for quality. It takes time. It can’t create complex objects with different geometries. And it can’t create flexible objects that bend, because materials deform during the production.

The new tool — dubbed “the replicator” after the Star Trek device that creates objects on demand — takes a whole different approach. It has the potential to transform the design and manufacture of everyday products from prosthetics and eyeglass lenses to running shoes. And it can create flexible objects.

Scientists have already made

The Airbus Superjumbo Faces Another Threat to Its Existence

Asia, in particular, appeared ripe for the A380. Japanese carriers, traditionally loyal to Boeing, had deployed the aging 747 on heavily commuted short-distance routes. China, with its growing class of tourists and a rapidly expanding economy, seemed like an obvious place to land. In the end, actual orders were disappointing. One early Japanese customer, a discount carrier, collapsed under the financial weight of its commitment, leaving ANA Holdings Inc. to step in and take the planes.
