Adria to take CityJet Sukhois – EX

Adria Airways and the Russian plane manufacturer signed a Letter of Intent for fifteen SSJ100s in November of last year. Last month, the Slovenian carrier advertised job openings for SSJ type-rated pilots. The President of the Sukhoi Civil Aviation Company, Alexander Rubtsov, recently said, “I think that in the first quarter we will sign the contract [with Adria] or maybe even earlier, in February, because based on our plans, the first deliveries are scheduled for April”. According to Mr Rubtsov, Sukhoi will deliver both new and already built airframes to Adria. In late December, the Slovenian carrier registered its own maintenance, repair and overhaul business named Adria Airways Super MRO aircraft maintenance which will be an SSJ100 aircraft Maintenance and Repair Organisation.

Brussels Airlines, which has been wet-leasing CityJet SSJ100s, did not renew its contract for the aircraft due to their “challenging maintenance” issues and “childhood diseases”. Aside from that, the airline insisted that the SSJ100 remains an “overall good” aircraft. “In general, even a small technical issue needs more time to be resolved than if it was an older type of aircraft. The collective experiences made so far with the SSJ are not yet very extensive. This results in longer maintenance dwell times, obliging Brussels Airlines to adapt its schedules and flight offers on a regular basis”, the company said. However, it added, “The SSJ100 offers high comfort and, on a regular basis, we receive positive feedback from our guests about the

A Real Tube Carrying Dreams of 600-M.P.H. Transit

To avoid making anyone sick, the system would take three minutes to accelerate to that speed, and the train would need to travel six miles to turn 90 degrees, said Ismaeel Babur, one of the company’s senior civil engineers.

Because of its slow takeoff rate, “you’ll feel 30 to 40 percent of the acceleration compared to an airplane,” Mr. Babur said. The trip will be so smooth, he added, that “coffee won’t slide even at 600 miles per hour.”

Each of the three companies has raised tens to hundreds of millions of dollars and developed its own patented approach to long-distance mass transit. TransPod, with $52 million in capital, has preliminary agreements to build a six-mile test track for a route that would eventually span the 180 miles between Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, as well as a shorter track near Limoges, France, for one of several French routes under consideration.

Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, which has raised $42 million, is in the design phase for a 1,100-yard test track in Abu Dhabi and is preparing to build a 350-yard test track in Toulouse, France.

Virgin, which has raised $295 million, is in the developmental stage with projects in India and Ohio. Last month, the Indian state of Maharashtra declared the company’s proposed hyperloop system between Pune and Mumbai as an official infrastructure project. Construction on a seven-mile test track could start this year, said Jay Walder, the company’s chief executive.

Manufacturing Bits: Feb. 19

Computed Axial Lithography
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the University of California at Berkeley have developed a 3D printing method to produce a new class of polymer parts.

The technology, called Computed Axial Lithography (CAL), projects photons on a resin in a vial within a 3D printer. In total, researchers have demonstrated the ability to shine 1,440 different projections with four beams into the resin.

The photons illuminate the resin as the vial rotates. This in turn creates shifting videos of projections as the vial rotates. Eventually, the process forms 3D objects in the resin. The process takes several minutes to complete. This is faster than existing polymer 3D printing techniques.

With the technology, researchers have devised a small airplane model, lattice structures and a miniaturized version of Rodin’s famous sculpture “The Thinker.” In the future, the technology could enable sports equipment, footwear, clothing and hearing aids.

“This is a breakthrough in the space of possible methods to do additive manufacturing,” said LLNL engineer Maxim Shusteff. “What this approach does is make it possible for interesting polymer parts to be made much more quickly, which is often a bottleneck, and we can now think about using materials that don’t work well with slower layer-by-layer methods.”

Chris Spadaccini, director of LLNL’s Center for Engineered Materials and Manufacturing, added: “This method is more powerful than other VAM (volumetric multibeam printing) concepts because it can create more complex structures in a layer-less fashion while using standard projection technology. It’s layer-less, it produces parts with good surface

The Many Rides Of Harrison Ford: 19 Pics Of His Cars, Bikes, And Airplanes

Having amassed a $300 million fortune through numerous Hollywood blockbusters has allowed Harrison Ford to play harder than he works. Movies such as The Fugitive, Indian Jones and Star Wars have catapulted the 76-year-old actor into stardom.

Although Ford makes millions of dollars for each movie, the rise to the top wasn’t a smooth ride. “Acting is my craft. I’ve spent my whole life working on it, and I want to get paid well to do it, because otherwise, I’m being irresponsible, not valuing what I do for a living. When I came into this business, I didn’t even know the names of the movie studios – I was under contract to a studio for $150 a week. One thing I learned is that the studios had no respect for a person who was willing to work for them for that amount. So I realized that the value I put on my own work was the value and respect I would get back,” said Ford.

Once he started making the big bucks, he bought a few toys. Besides the several airplanes that he owns, Ford said, “I also have more than my fair share of motorbikes – eight or nine. I have four or five BMWs, a couple of Harleys, a couple of Hondas and a Triumph; plus I have sports touring bikes. I’m a single rider, and I love being out in the air,” said Ford, according to the Daily Mail. Let’s take a look at all of his rides

Tiny cabin from Tree Tents arrives flatpacked

Fuselage is a cabin in a box. Yes, you read that right. Like Ikea desks and direct-to-consumer sofas, this new flatpack vacation home from Tree Tents is shipped to you in a box and can be constructed upon arrival.

Like its aeronautically themed name suggests, the tiny prefab cabin has a tubular shape that vaguely evokes elments of an airplane. From end to end the aluminum Fuselage stretches 17 feet long and is around 8 feet wide, making it certifiably cozy. Made from timber and recycled aluminum parts, the cabin is lightweight enough to stand on stilts or hang from a tree like a giant ornament (expert consultation advised).

The cabin has triple insulation, a wood burning stove, and radiant heating, meaning it will withstand chilly weather. The basic model, which starts at around $33,500 includes convertible furniture including a set of bunk beds, and a table/queen size bed.

Boeing CEO: China is very important to us

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg on the company’s supply challenges keeping up with growth, the company’s sales in China, the sector’s growth potential and the government’s defense spending.

As U.S. and Chinese officials meet this week in Washington to iron out a new trade agreement ahead of the March 1 tariff deadline, one key piece to the puzzle could be found in the sky above.

“Certainly airplanes can be part of a solution when it comes to trade,” Boeing Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith told FOX Business recently, ahead of the latest trade meetings. “I think the unique part about our business and the commercial airplane assets is that they really enable trade.”

In the next two decades, China’s aviation market – which is becoming one of the largest in the world – will need nearly 7,700 new airplanes valued at $1.2 trillion, according to Boeing’s latest Commercial Market Outlook. A majority of those deliveries will be for airlines growing their fleets, while the rest will be used to replace ageing aircraft. Most will be single-aisle aircraft, like the popular Boeing 737 model, with the rest being wide-body aircraft and freighters. The aviation market in China will become the largest domestic travel market by the end of the next 10 years, according to Boeing’s forecast.

Officials from the world’s two largest economies will meet in Washington this
