How SITAONAIR and Panasonic are preparing for 5G inflight cellular

Mobile technology is advancing rapidly towards the next big leap, with 5G networks promising vastly increased capacity, lower latency and faster speeds which will open up new opportunities for the Internet of Things, both on the ground and ultimately in the air.

Readying to define the future, mobile phone manufacturers are introducing 5G devices. But are the skies prepared for passengers carrying 5G smartphones?

Philippe Combe, a product manager specializing in mobile for SITAONAIR, tells Runway Girl Network that the company will consider 5G as an extension of its existing inflight mobile connectivity services, noting that the emphasis will be on ensuring seamless connections.

“As a customer, on the ground, whether you are on 3G or 4G or 5G, your mobile can connect automatically to any network. This is seamless, frictionless. This is what we try to replicate within the aircraft. The experience on the ground should be the same on the aircraft,” says Combe.

He believes the challenge for airlines will be as much about setting up the right business model as it will be about having 5G-capable inflight mobile connectivity hardware. “We are in partnership with mobile operators in order to monetize the services and create adoption to have a simple way to access the services; and also all of the billing is done as you are using the phone today.”

SITAONAIR is laying the foundation for these revenue models through partnerships with mobile network providers. Its partnership with Etisalat includes a plan to extend 5G services for customers in the future.

Combe says SITAONAIR’s

NTSB Investigating Deadly Crash of Amazon Cargo Flight, Atlas Air 3591

Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767. (Chad Slattery/Amazon)

Atlas Air Flight 3591 crashed into a bay outside Anahuac, Texas Saturday, killing all three people on board.

The National Transportation Safety Administration’s “go team” is on site collecting evidence as part of its investigation into what caused the flight, a Boeing 767-300 flying on behalf of Amazon, to plummet as it approached Houston’s George Bush International Airport.

“Our entire purpose for being here is to find out what happened so that we don’t have to go through this again,” said NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt, who is leading the investigation. “We’re not here to determine the probable cause. We’re not here to speculate. We’re just here to collect the perishable evidence.”

Flight 3591 was a cargo plane that Atlas Air Worldwide was operating for Amazon’s transportation division. It left Miami for Houston at 11:30 a.m. eastern time and, after two hours, pilots contacted Houston controllers to begin their descent, according to Sumwalt. Controllers provided radar vectors to avoid some rain, then, six minutes later, cleared Flight 3591 to descend to 3,000 feet. At 12:39, with the aircraft traveling at 276 mph and having reached 6,000 feet, controllers lost radar and communications contact with the plane and it plunged into nearby Trinity Bay for unknown reasons. There was no distress call.

National Weather Service data from the day shows minimal precipitation and low wind along with light clouds in the area.

The NTSB does have a video, obtained from a nearby prison, that shows five seconds of

On the cusp of flight, Annapolis County man’s 40-year passion project almost airborne

The goal … is to have the final inspection completed and signed off, paperwork completed, aircraft registration marks and permit to fly in hand.

            – Robert Bishop

Sourcing parts and materials from all over North America, Bishop started his multi-decade project. He worked on it everywhere from in his home basement and workshop to a garage in Quebec and a rented shop near the Toronto airport. He assembled the plane in hangars in both Hamilton, Ontario, and Waterville, with his final move to the hangar at the Stanley airport near Windsor, N.S., all following his various family moves.

“In short, the aircraft was built in Quebec, Ontario, and Nova Scotia,” explains Bishop. “This is why it has taken me 40-plus years to get this far.”

Bishop has been a one-man show when it comes to building the aircraft. Since the project was an all-wood structure, he designed, cut, shaped, sanded and epoxy glued on his own. He did, however, cut metal parts to size and pass them on to others to complete the welding jobs.

“Where my knowledge fell short, I relied on several publications, including an old, one-inch-thick bulletin published by the US Departments of Navy, Air Force, and Commerce,” he says.

To make the plane historically accurate, Bishop used books, magazines, sketches, small scale plans, detailed drawings and any other published material he could obtain.

The biggest challenge, he says, was that aircraft power comes from a 1940-1945 vintage seven-cylinder radial engine. This made the parts and accessories

Vietnam inks deals for Boeing planes worth billions of dollars

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — President Donald Trump and Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong presided over the signing of several trade deals in Hanoi on Wednesday, including agreements to sell the booming Southeast Asian country 110 Boeing planes worth billions of dollars.

In the biggest of the deals, Chicago-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co. said it is selling 100 of its 737 MAX planes to Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet. The privately owned carrier operates domestic and regional flights using Airbus planes.

Boeing and Vietjet said their deal was worth $12.7 billion at list prices. Airlines typically negotiate discounts for bulk orders, and the actual value is likely about half that amount. Boeing said the deal was previously listed among its orders as coming from an unidentified customer, so it doesn’t add to the backlog of 737 MAX planes.

Vietjet is doubling down on its bet for the 737 MAX, which is an updated version of the workhorse single-aisle 737 model. It already had 100 of the planes on order following a 2016 deal, though none have been delivered so far.

The deal marks a major confidence boost for Boeing, which has faced questions about the plane’s safety since a 737 MAX 8 operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea, killing all on board, just minutes after taking off from Jakarta on Oct. 29.

Ellenton mans near-death experience leads to CPR class – Sarasota Herald

Wendell Thorne survived a massive heart attack thanks to a CPR-trained bystander, and he is now giving back

Maybe it was something he ate. He tried telling himself that anyway. The pain had to be gastrointestinal. He looked in the mirror, where the pictures of his children are tucked in the frame, and deep down he knew he was lying to himself.

Wendell Thorne, 61, was having a massive heart attack.

It happened in December, at the Ellenton barber shop he owns called His Place Barber and Grooming. It’s for men. He was there all alone, sitting in his black chair, the model airplanes, 900-pound marlin his wife caught and framed photo of Ted Williams looking down on him as the pain worsened.

“I was positive it was my last day on earth,’’ he said. “I was sure I was going to die. I had a very clear image that today was the day.

“I wasn’t scared. I wasn’t sad. I was annoyed. Really? Today? I knew I did not want to die in my barbershop.’’

He made his way up the street, to Ellenton Urgent Care. The physician looked at the EKG and said “Oh, Jesus,’’ according to Thorne. There was 100 percent blockage. After a call to 911 the paramedics arrived promptly. As they wheeled Thorne out to the ambulance Deliana Marte — a nursing student at Manatee Technical College — ran after him with his jacket and shirt.

She performed CPR, cracking six of his ribs, his sternum and vertebrae, Thorne said.

“She was really

Chinese man builds life-size model of Airbus A320

China (CCTV / CNN) — A man in China made his childhood dreams come true by building a life-size model of a passenger plane.

For one Chinese man, the ultimate life goal has always been owning a plane.

He overcame the financial burden by piecing one together bit by bit.

Take a look at Zhu Yue’s Airbus A320.

He began working on it in 2016 when the reality of owning a plane set in.

All the airplanes he could find were just too expensive.

Working with five friends, Zhu and his crew repurposed more than 80 tons of steel into this model, he affectionately calls “Dream.”

But even this remake didn’t come cheap, it cost nearly $400,000 to build.

Zhu’s “Dream” won’t be taking to the skies any time soon, in its current condition the plane can’t fly.

Until then, thousands of visitors are stopping by every day to check out the model airplane.
