Follow the journey of building a LEGO Airbus A350 with a wingspan over 5 feet

Lam Siu Wing is an artist and writer based in Hong Kong who has a keen interest in urban landscape, transport, and culture, which inspires him to always have a wandering eye during his travels. During one of his return trips on an A350 from Tel Aviv to Hong Kong in the summer of 2017, he had a sudden inspiration to build an aircraft made from LEGO. What resulted was a beautiful LEGO model of the Airbus A350 with a wingspan of more than 5 feet.

Siu Wing’s research started with a thought to upgrade the official LEGO Boeing 787 set 10177, but he quickly found that there wasn’t sufficient design information on the real airplane’s interiors. That’s when he decided to instead focus on the Airbus A350. Of course, living in Hong Kong would mean that Cathay Pacific airlines was the obvious choice of an airline carrier. So he began building from the inside out, and had a prototype completed within 2 months.

While the prototype was a satisfactory build, it just wasn’t good enough for Siu Wing. Two parts in particular troubled him: the wheels and the wings. As the wheels are the only three support points for the 8,000-brick plane, their ability to support the model’s weight was key. Similarly, the wings have to support the weight of the engines, which are fairly heavy, in addition to their own weight. Since the wingspan is almost the same length as

What happened? NTSB says tail and wings broke off plane before ‘unusual’ California crash

Authorities on Monday picked up plane wreckage strewn across four blocks following an “unusual” crash that killed five people on Sunday in a Southern California neighborhood.

Witnesses told National Transportation Safety Board investigators the small plane came out of a cloud in one piece before its tail and wings broke off, a spokesperson said at a Monday press conference. The Cessna already began burning before it hit a Yorba Linda house, setting it ablaze.

Orange County officials identified the deceased pilot as Antonio Pastini, 75, a retired Chicago police officer. NTSB is investigating his medical history, flight experience, maintenance reports, as well as whether weather such as lightning affected the crash.

Pastini left the nearby Fullerton Municipal Airport at about 1:35 p.m., NTSB said, and flew about 10 miles before his plane began a rapid descent. Authorities said they do not know where the commercial pilot was going or his speed.

Four people inside the house died in the resulting fire, NTSB said. The coroner’s office is using DNA to identify the two women and two men before notifying their families.

A Passion for Aviation

Growing up in Connecticut in the 1940s and 1950s, at the dawn of the Jet Age, Hank Galpin and his family would often summer on the coast, not far from New York City, where he could watch planes arrive and depart from one of the country’s largest airports. Those early encounters fed a lifelong fascination with aviation in Galpin, one that continues to this day.

Galpin, 73, has been a farmer, pilot, owner of a helicopter service provider, co-founded the A.L.E.R.T. helicopter and most recently served as a commissioner on the Flathead Municipal Airport Authority, the governing body of Glacier Park International Airport. Galpin stepped down in December 2018 after 22 years of service on the board. Board chairman and professional airline pilot Curt McIntyre said much of GPIA’s growth in the last two decades is the result of the hard work of board members like Galpin.

“Hank is a pilot’s pilot with a true passion for aviation,” McIntyre said. “He’s a real advocate for aviation in the Flathead Valley.”

Galpin was attending Yale University in the 1960s when he learned to fly. At the time, the school had a flying club. After college, he became an air intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy before moving to Montana and getting into real estate. Despite the career change, Galpin remained involved in flying, and over the years he’s owned a number of aircraft, including a few he built himself. In the 1970s, Galpin purchased a ranch west of Kalispell and got into

Model shop hopes fundraiser will build a following for new location

A beloved hobby store is launching an online fundraiser to relocate after the owner of the location it has occupied for 65 years raised its rent.

Evett’s Model Shop has been a part of the Sunset Park neighborhood for more than 70 years and was founded by Colby Evett, who worked for the Donald Douglas Aircraft Company and used his engineering knowledge to help generations of locals build model and remote-control airplanes, rockets, cats and boats. Evett died in 2013, but his wife Yvonne and dedicated employees Luke Orrin and Gene Duarte have kept his legacy going.

But after Evett’s landlord raised the rent by a third, Yvonne, Orrin and Duarte thought they were left with no choice but to close up shop. They announced last November that the store would close by the end of 2019.

After an outpouring of support from the community, however, Evett’s launched a GoFundMe in late December asking for $50,000 to cover the expenses associated with relocating the business to a cheaper location in West Los Angeles. The shop has again launched an Indiegogo campaign to relocate and will be accepting donations through the end of March in exchange for models, classes and baked goods from Yvonne.

The services Evett’s provides to local families and hobbyists are irreplaceable, Orrin said.

“If you want to get kids off of their screens and doing something tactile, you can’t ask for something better than this,” he said. “It builds their skills and brings families together.”

Orrin said he and Duarte are willing to

Bay Village Women’s Club holds 50th anniversary antiques and vintage sale

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio – The Bay Village Women’s Club held their 50th Anniversary Antiques and Vintage Sale at Bay Village High School on March 2 and 3. Though it was a smaller venue than in previous years, it was still packed with antiques, memorabilia and vintage items that were arranged meticulously, making it easy to explore the vast array of items. It was truly a “walk back in history.”

In addition to many tables with small items there was also a well-stocked furniture inventory of tables, chests (even a large cedar chest) and cabinets in excellent condition.

A jam-packed area of vintage toys was great fun to explore. A Roy Rogers metal lunch box sat atop a display that included even more “western” items such as toy guns, horses, cars, construction equipment and model airplanes. Virtually all the toys had well-preserved color–no worn out items to be found here.

The Bay Village Historical Society was on hand in partnership with the Women’s Club. At their table, an area couple, Dennis and Carol Mabry, found a vintage map of the Vermilion area where Carol’s family still has a cottage that was built, she believes, in the 1940s.

Joe Henderson: Election Day is almost here in Tampa Mayor’s race

Tuesday likely is winnowing day for those seven candidates in the Tampa Mayor’s race. Unless presumed front-runner Jane Castor breaks the 50 percent barrier the top two finishers face off in a runoff on April 23. That is the likely scenario.

The campaign has been unlike anything in the city’s history of mayoral elections. We have David Straz to thank (maybe). His self-funded campaign has been a blitz mix of platitude and paranoia. He sprinkled in some populist proposals like a minimum hourly wage of $15 for city workers.

In his frequent TV ad spots, Straz promises to work for prosperity for all, whatever that means. It sounds appealing though because who could be against prosperity?

But he also has made his share of unforced errors like his vow to investigate “graft and corruption” in the city. That charge apparently based off a single letter Straz received from a former city worker.

He also floated trimming $100 million in “fluff” from the city’s $1 billion budget. That sounds good but then it would take some interesting math to get to his minimum wage proposal.

And Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn was furious that a recent Straz mailer made it seem like he was endorsing the candidate. Buckhorn didn’t endorse anyone in the primary but, just spit-balling here, if there is a runoff between Straz and Castor the current Mayor might choose a side.

Hint: It will be Castor.

Castor has run a smooth, understated campaign that appears designed to avoid the big mistake. We’ll see if that
