‘American Pickers’ segment on Lex man to air

LEXINGTON – The popular History Channel TV show “American Pickers” will air a segment on a Lexington car collector at 9 p.m. Monday.

“American Pickers,” the documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique picking, filmed an episode on Oct. 25, 2018, at Timothy Corwin’s farm in Morrow County.

Lexington native Corwin, known worldwide as the singer and original member of the Lexington-Mansfield band The Ohio Express, which scored five Top 40 hits in the 1960s, operates The Bucket Seat on Orchard Park Road.

The “Pickers” episode was filmed at his farm, but the crew did not come to the body shop.

Corwin said he began collecting in 1973 after coming off the road with the band. His collection includes about 100 mostly British cars, 30 bicycles, numerous motorcycles and model airplanes, the latter which he and his father Bud, at 90, still build together.

Unearthing WWII aircraft buried in Kayseri

In October 2015, I was interviewed by Sabah’s economy service about the possibility of dozens of World War II-era aircraft that may have been dismantled and buried beneath the airfield at the 2nd Air Supply and Maintenance Base in Kayseri. This topic remained in the local, national and international headlines for several weeks. During this time, I suffered the scorn and ridicule dished out by members of certain aviation-related social media groups for reigniting an urban legend for the umpteenth time, and I’m sure to be the laughing-stock of the neighborhood again when they read this.

But we all know that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan looked squarely into the eyes of the commander of the Turkish Air Force and said, “There are buried aircraft in this country” during a satellite-launching ceremony held in Kayseri held in 2016. When subsequently pressed for a comment on the matter by the press, the commander, whose native town was Kayseri, strongly refuted this claim with a single word, “Hogwash.”

Later on, I set up a team called the Focke-Wulf FW-190 Recovery/Recovery Group and appealed first to the president’s chief advisory for technology, Davut Kavranoğlu. Nothing clicked. Then, we paid a visit to former President Abdullah Gül with a proposal to exhume these aircraft with the cooperation of his namesake university in Kayseri. Alas, this appeal also fell on deaf ears, and we dropped the matter entirely after I received a trite message six months later from the General Staff, which essentially read between the lines, “What

Tesla to unveil Model Y; Musk teases futuristic Tesla truck

March 4 (UPI) — Tesla will unveil the Model Y sport-utility vehicle on March 14 at the company’s Los Angeles Design Studio, founder Elon Musk said.

The Model Y will be a cheaper, scaled down version of the Model X, the same way the Model 3 is a smaller, cheaper version of the Model S. Musk said it will cost about 10 percent more than the Model 3 because it’s about 10 percent larger. The price of the Model 3 varies but the company just announced it would begin producing the long-promised $35,000 version. The Model Y will use the same battery as the Model 3 but will get less range because of the added weight and size, Musk tweeted.

The Model Y will be the company’s first new product announcement since the Tesla semi-truck and Roadster 2 were unveiled 17 months ago.

If that wasn’t enough, Musk also tweeted about another future vehicle.

“Personally, I’m most excited by the Tesla Truck,” he said. “Maybe it will be too futuristic for most people, but I love it.”

In an earnings call last month, Musk described the Model Y as a “manufacturing revolution.” About 75 percent of the Model Y’s parts will be borrowed from the Model 3.

It’s not all good news for Musk, though, as the Securities and Exchange Commission has accused him of violating a settlement by tweeting car production numbers this month.

Wichita Falls veteran’s 70-year passion for history of aviation on display

Among America’s distinguished military aircraft of WWII, Korea and Vietnam, retired Air Force veteran Jack Riddle was an onboard combat flight engineer for a notable Vietnam-era aircraft and has carefully constructed vintage models of countless others.

Air Force veteran Jack Riddle has created about 100 detailed and authentic models of military aircraft.
Torin Halsey, Wochit

Now, age 82, Riddle’s hands are understandably not as nimble as they were in his youth, but encouraged by his wife Naoma, Jack’s passion to build military aircraft replicas is nearing its 70th year. That’s correct; his love of flight goes back to when he assembled his first model in tissue paper and balsawood at about age 14.

Riddle served on the C-130 Hercules cargo transport aircraft during his seven-year span of service in Vietnam. The imposing cargo plane often penetrated deep into combat zones.

The 20-year Air Force veteran initially became an instructor mechanic at SAFB in 1955 and later took part in over 200 combat cargo missions in Vietnam.

“Our job was to load supplies and deliver shipments to combat troops,” he said, “and we returned the injured and the dead back to our base.”
