With Tesla as its model, MagniX revs up electric motors to revolutionize airplanes

REDMOND, Wash. — An electric-propulsion company called MagniX shifted its headquarters from Australia to Redmond just a few months ago — but it’s already revving up for takeoff.

The venture, owned by Singapore-based Clermont Group, is on track to conduct its first flight tests with an all-electric motor installed in a converted plane by the end of the year, CEO Roei Ganzarski told GeekWire this week during a tour of MagniX’s digs.

The two-story office space in Redmond already houses more than 15 employees, and Ganzarski plans to hire 20 more in the next three months, mostly in engineering. Roughly 50 more employees are working at MagniX’s engineering facility in Arundel, about 40 miles south of Brisbane on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Ganzarski, a Boeing veteran, said the company moved its global headquarters to Redmond to take advantage of the Seattle area’s engineering talent and its aerospace ecosystem. “You can’t be a world leader in aerospace from Australia. … We decided that the most logical place for us would be Seattle, Washington,” he said.

MagniX’s baby sits on a test stand in the Redmond facility’s lab: a round electric motor that weighs about 110 pounds and is small enough to fit inside a carry-on bag. Looks can be deceiving, however: That drum-sized Magni 250 motor can churn

Could the 737 Max problems compel Southwest to change business strategies?

The Max amps up the Southwest model by extending the range the airline can fly its planes and by boosting efficiency. In its announcement of Southwest’s order of the new Max 7, Boeing said the plane is “part of Southwest’s ongoing effort to improve fuel efficiency and profitability.” Southwest has grounded its 34 737 Max 8 airplanes, which the airline said represented less than 5 percent of daily flights.

Southwest planned to use the 737 Max on its new route to Hawaii. If, however, the Max requires special pilot certification, Southwest may have to rethink some of its decisions. For example, will Southwest have to ensure that all of its pilots are certified to fly the Max as well as other 737s in order to maintain its pool of pilots who can fly any plane in the fleet? If the airline opts not to put the Max back into service, will it be able to maintain its projected profitability for its Hawaii route?

Southwest declined to answer our questions and has referred journalists to an online statement.

The route is an example of how airplane technology drives the aviation industry, and why Southwest historically has worked closely to advise Boeing on upgrades that would be most helpful. Only a few years ago, the idea of Southwest flying across an ocean was a dream, because the 737 was not certified for that type of flight. Now, Boeing is producing 737s that can handle long overseas flights.

Of course, Boeing sells other airliners that make such flights. Fort

Federal Government Grounds All Boeing 737 Max 8 Jets As Investigation Continues

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

The federal government is grounding all 737 MAX jetliners as an investigation continues into Sunday’s deadly crash in Ethiopia. It was the second crash involving the new Boeing model in five months. President Trump announced the order at the White House this afternoon after repeated assurances from Boeing and domestic carriers that the planes are safe. Boeing’s chief executive made that argument just yesterday in a phone call with the president.

The jet manufacturer has long had a direct line to the highest reaches of power here in Washington, as NPR’s Scott Horsley reports.

SCOTT HORSLEY, BYLINE: President Trump had been in office less than a month when he paid a visit to a Boeing factory in South Carolina to celebrate the launch of a new 787 Dreamliner.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: And I have to say also that is one beautiful airplane.

HORSLEY: Parts for the long-range Dreamliner come from around the world, and the planes are mostly sold overseas. Nevertheless, Trump hailed the jet as a triumph of American engineering and manufacturing.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

TRUMP: May God bless the United States of America, and God bless Boeing.

(CHEERING)

HORSLEY: The president joked about his tough negotiations with Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg over a new series of military jets and new 747s to serve as Air Force One. The two met face-to-face at Trump Tower and Trump’s Florida resort.

Correction: Cargo Plane Crash story

DALLAS — In a story March 12 about a cargo plane crash in Texas, The Associated Press reported erroneously that a plane’s stick shaker signals an imminent engine stall. A stick shaker warns of an impending stall from a loss of aerodynamic lift from the wings.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Cargo plane appears to have hit turbulence before crash

A Boeing 767 cargo plane appears to have hit turbulence just a minute before it dropped into a rapid descent and smashed into a Texas bay in February killing all three people aboard

By JAKE BLEIBERG

Associated Press

DALLAS — A Boeing 767 appears to have hit turbulence a minute before it entered a steep descent that ended when the plane smashed into a Texas bay in February, killing all three people aboard, according to federal authorities.

“Small vertical accelerations” suggest Atlas Air Flight 3591 entered turbulence soon after the pilots had descended to avoid a band of precipitation as they approached a Houston airport, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report released Tuesday.

Seconds after leveling off around 6,200 feet, the cargo plane’s engines surged to “maximum thrust” and it briefly pointed its nose 4 degrees up, according to flight data. The jet then rapidly swung to point 49 degrees downward and began its drop toward the muddy bay, the federal agency said.

An NTSB spokesman, Keith Holloway, said it is still investigating the underlying cause of the sharp change in pitch.

It’s a move that alarmed aviation experts.

“Obviously, going 49 degrees

Before Trump’s order grounding Boeing Max 8, planes were still being flown out of BWI

UPDATE: President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued an “emergency order” grounding all Boeing Max 8 airplanes in the U.S., after Canada joined much of the rest of the world in ordering the jetliners out of the air during the investigation into the fatal Ethiopian Air crash Sunday.

Forty-nine flights were delayed and 14 were canceled Wednesday at BWI as of 3:30 p.m., according to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website.

The airport and Southwest Airlines, its top carrier, did not respond to questions about how many of the interruptions were related to the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max jets.

The original article — written before Trump’s emergency order — appears below.

Boeing pauses deliveries of 737 Max planes

Boeing Thursday confirmed it’s pausing deliveries of its 737 Max model planes to customers after the US. issued an emergency order grounding all Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft. after 157 people died in a crash Sunday in Ethiopia.

CBS News reports from a Boeing spokesman that the planemaker will continue to build the 737 models at its current rate.

Each month, Boeing reports that it builds 52 aircraft a month of all models of the 737.

“We continue to build 737 MAX airplanes, while assessing how the situation, including potential capacity constraints, will impact our production system,” the spokesman tells CBS News. “No change to our production rate at this time, but we continue to work through production decisions.”
