Florida Plans To Buy a $15.5 Million Plane For Gov. Ron DeSantis

Florida officials could soon finalize a deal to buy a $15.5 million business jet to fly Gov. Ron DeSantis, more than six months after he was a passenger in a state-operated aircraft that experienced a mechanical malfunction.

A negotiation team with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Tuesday recommended the state acquire a nine-passenger jet from Textron Aviation Inc. The recommendation goes to FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen, who will make a final decision.

Members of the negotiation team did not discuss the plane’s cost during a public meeting at the state agency’s headquarters in Tallahassee. But the agency late Tuesday released the $15.5 million cost, which will be financed.

The airplane model state officials intend to buy is the Cessna Citation Latitude, which the company advertises on its website as having an “elegant and lean design” with an electronic door, touch-screen avionics, a large lavatory and a spacious cabin.

In a notice posted after the recommendation was made, the law-enforcement agency said it picked the Textron jet after determining it would provide “the best value to the state.” Lawmakers during this spring’s legislative session included a $1.29 million recurring appropriation in the state budget to make payments toward the purchase of the aircraft, the agency said.

“The department reserves the right to hold additional negotiations with Textron Aviation Inc. in order to establish final contract terms and conditions,” the notice added.

When the state advertised to solicit proposals for the plane, it said vendors would need to provide the total bid price, which would include

US Bank hosts Kids Fun Day for United Way’s Day of Caring on WKU Campus

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) — U.S. Bank hosted the Kids Fun Day on the South lawn of WKU’s Campus.

WKU athletes volunteered their time to play soccer and toss football with several kids from various organizations.

“They’re my angels”: Colorado man looks to flock of homing pigeons as personal and professional salvation

Flying down U.S. 85 in his Dodge Magnum station wagon Saturday, Clint Vider carried a trunk full of birds, Bugzy the miniature schnauzer napping in a dog bed on the center console and a pit in his stomach.

The 48-year-old quit his job a couple weeks ago at the Kersey Family Dollar up the road from his humble yellow house, having decided to devote his life to his angels — his epithet for the 52 white homing pigeons he considers his professional and personal saviors.

Vider raised the birds from hatchlings and houses them in “apartments” he built in his backyard. Through his one-man business, White Doves Memory Chain, Vider shares his precious birds with the public, offering their unique ability to burst forth in a snow-white flock from hand-built cages for life’s momentous moments: weddings, funerals, graduations and the like.

Watching his source of income fly away hours from home is something Vider is still getting accustomed to, seven years after starting the trade on a whim with his uncle, who he’s since bought out of the business. (He charges $150 to $225, depending on the number of birds.)

But what goes up must come down. Vider — always suppressing anxiety when turning the birds loose — knows that his training, paired with the birds’ natural smarts, means his winged business partners can find their way back to Kersey when released anywhere from Cheyenne to the south end of Parker.

Armstrong Museum ready to inspire another generation – Register

WAPAKONETA — The Armstrong Air and Space Museum is more than a monument to Wapakoneta’s famous native who was the first man to step foot on the moon 50 year ago.

With its recently completed expansion, it’s also a space to inspire the next generations of innovators, in the aptly named Neil Armstrong STEM Inspiration Center.

“Today we honor a courageous Ohioan,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said during last Sunday’s dedication ceremonies. “A man who inspired us 50 years ago. A man who continues to really inspire us today. But today we also look to the future. It’s our hope and our belief that this center will inspire young people, maybe future Neil Armstrongs, young people who have an interest in science and math and maybe that will help spark something special in them when they come in here.”

The expansion will allow more teaching opportunities at the museum.

“The museum really suffered by having a lack of significant classroom space with capabilities. So it’s larger; there’s more we can do, there’s technology involved,” said Dante Centuori, executive director of the museum. “We really want to be able to reach more students and families with programs that can really focus on engineering and technology.”

Other needed updates were made.

“We also needed to upgrade the facility, so we have a new HVAC system and other systems with access and fire and security, so the things that visitors don’t notice was a tremendous part of this expansion. We’re really excited,” Centuori said.

This is only the completion of
