Why Boeing Should Commit To A New Midsize Airplane Amid 737 MAX Crisis

During Boeing’s first-quarter earnings call last week, Chairman and CEO Dennis Muilenburg was reserved addressing questions about the company’s plans for a New Middle-of-the-Market Aircraft (NMA), also dubbed the 797 by industry watchers. The company is rightly focused on getting the 737 MAX back in the air, but its problems with the 737 MAX may be an argument in favor of moving forward with the 797 program. Some industry analysts believe that Boeing would be smart to commit soon.

“Boeing [recently] reiterated their belief in the market for the NMA as they find a gap between the narrow body market (150-200 passengers/3,000 nautical mile range) and the wide body market (350 PAX/above 6,000NM) that could be filled by the NMA; an aircraft with 250 seats or so, that they estimate to be in the 2,000 aircraft need,” says Mylène Scholnick, Senior Advisor at ICF Aviation Group. “At the earnings call for 1Q19, they were a little less firm on announcing it at the Paris Air Show as initially planned as they are putting all resources and focus on the MAX situation. It was actually the first time they mention that there is a potential effect on the NMA from the MAX. They are still targeting to making it available by mid 2020s, but have made it now a ‘potential opportunity’ with the board to make a firm decision.”

Flagstaff engineer creates FanFlyer personal aircraft

April 28– Apr. 28–More than a jetpack, less than a helicopter: The quest for this “missing link” in personal aircraft prompted a Boeing-sponsored competition with $2 million in prizes and inspired Flagstaff engineer Jim Corning to make his sketches and ideas a reality.

Now more than a year later, a candy red, 400-pound mock-up of the “FanFlyer,” Corning’s submission to the “GoFly” personal flight challenge, commands attention in his eastside warehouse. Corning and his teammates test everything from noise levels to fan blade shape, making minute adjustments to a 1/3-scale model and other test systems that could revolutionize the final creation.

FanFlyer’s current design features four fans surrounding an open cockpit that can hold a 200-pound pilot. Corning expects the gas-powered vehicle, when it is complete, to have a cruising speed as high as 80 miles per hour and a maximum elevation of 10,000 feet.

“If you want to fly without an airplane now, you’ve got to either deal with a hang glider or jump off a mountain with a wing suit or something. And all those things look pretty scary. This will allow you to take off straight up and fly for as long or as short as you like — and fly up the side of a hill instead of down it,” Corning said.

Boeing Hit With New FAA Safety Directive Ahead of Shareholder Meeting

Boeing Co. (BA – Get Report) shares extended declines in pre-market trading Monday after the U.S. Federal Aviation Commission said it would impose new safety checks on the planemaker’ss 787 series of aircraft.

The new Airworthiness Directive, which will come into effect on June 3, will including inspections and checks for some of the planes parts, as well as inspections of aileron and elevator power control units. The FAA said the new directive was prompted by reports of hydraulic leakage to the units caused by lightnings strikes.

Last week, a  New York Times report, citing hundreds of internal emails, federal records and corporate documents. suggested Boeing’s ten-year-old South Carolina plant has been “plagued by shoddy production” and “weak oversight” that could raise questions over the safety of the 787 Dreamliner and the company’s broader culture. The Times report said Boeing pressured employees into working more quickly to avoid production delays while “at times ignoring issues raised” by those closest to the Dreamliner’s assembly.

We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all The Boeing Company Model 787 series airplanes,” the FAA said. “This AD was prompted by reports of hydraulic leakage caused by damage to aileron and elevator actuators from lightning strikes.”

“This AD requires an inspection or records check to inspect for certain parts, detailed inspections of aileron and elevator power control units (PCUs), and applicable on-condition actions,” the Agency said. “We are issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.”

Boeing shares were marked 1.06% lower in

Explore aeromodelling as a hobby at this workshop

As a hobby, aeromodelling is widely popular in the city. Members of Pune Aeromodellers Association meet regularly, to fly their expensive radio-controlled models. The airplanes range from fast-flying jets to slower, vintage models, reminiscent of the Second World War combat aircraft, de Havilland Mosquito.

Aeromodelling, though, is a costly pastime, agree the aeromodellers, but for the founders of the city-based JetSetGo Aerosports, building model aircrafts is a great way to familiarise youngsters with scientific principles. JetSetGo regularly organises aeromodelling workshops, the next of which will take place early next month.

One of the organisers, Nilesh Patil, says that aeromodelling serves the purpose of getting the youth interested in science. “I have spent money from my own pocket to put together aeromodelling workshops for underprivileged children,” he says. JetSetGo’s module on the subject is extensive. Lessons begin with an introduction to the history of aviation.

Participants get to build five to seven model airplanes

After that, Patil and his team introduce students to the principles of aeronautics and the technicalities of aeromodelling. A separate interactive segment focuses on the science and technology behind aeronautics. The fun part is when you get to build an actual model aircraft — which could range from a hangar rat (a rubber-powered airplane) to advanced models that are built with balsa wood.

The five-day aeromodelling summer camp will also include an introduction to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), rocket launchers, more complex remote-controlled airplanes, helicopters and even quadcopters. “What we aspire to do

In this episode of our CleanTech Talk podcast interview seriesChanan Bos and I sat down with Galileo Russell, CEO, Founder, Director, Producer, and Host of HyperChange TV.

Our conversation ran for 1½ hours, so I’ve split it into two episodes. Below is the second episode (and a text summary). The first episode (+ summary) is here.

At the kickoff to this second portion of our conversation with Galileo Russell, I was rambling about the loss of Elon’s spirit from some portions of the company, which was probably unavoidable as the company grew. This idea was
