Tensions with Gaza flare shortly after IDF drill preparing for escalation

Tensions between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip flared on Monday, one day after a Hamas militant died in an “accidental explosion” in the northern Gaza Strip and shortly after a large-scale IDF drill along the border.

The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, said that 37-year-old Muhammad Walidal-Quqa died after succumbing to wounds he sustained a day earlier and had been involved in “jihadist activities, including manufacturing and assembling explosives.”

Early Monday morning, rocket alert sirens sounded in several southern Israeli communities bordering the northern Gaza Strip. According to the army, a projectile landed in an open area and security forces were sweeping the area for remnants. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in the attack. The IDF later struck several Hamas targets over the course of the day on Monday following the rocket fire and late afternoon gunfire toward troops.

Both Hamas and splinter Islamic organizations have launched rocket attacks into Israel. There has been no official claim of responsibility for the launching of the projectile, but Israel holds Hamas accountable for all fire emanating from the Strip.

Former Timberlane High student sues school for injury

BRENTWOOD — A former Timberlane Regional High School student is taking legal action against a teacher and the school after he claimed he suffered a serious eye injury from a piece of wood when the teacher used a lacrosse stick to hit model planes in class.

Corey Rocco, 18, of Sandown, recently filed suit over the 2014 incident in Rockingham County Superior Court.

According to the suit, Rocco was in an American Studies class at the high school on Dec. 12, 2014, when students were instructed to make model airplanes out of popsicle sticks. He claims that near the end of the class teacher James Kelly used a lacrosse stick to strike some of the planes to test their durability.

The suit maintains that Kelly hit the planes “without taking any safety precautions” and that a piece of wood from one of the planes hit Rocco in his right eye.

“There was no action that Corey could have taken to avoid this accident. As a result of this accident, Corey sustained severe and painful permanent injuries to his eye, which required surgery,” said the suit, which was filed through Rocco’s lawyer, Tanya Spony of the Nashua law firm Smith-Weiss Shepard.

The suit accuses Kelly and the school of negligence and claims his injury resulted in medical expenses and “pain and suffering now and into the future.”

The suit also accuses the school and School Administrative Unit 55 of negligent supervision, maintaining they are liable for the incident.

The suit doesn’t specify a dollar amount

New Uses of Noncontact Metrology in Aerospace

By placing a high-technology optical laser probe on a high-precision CMM, Hexagon is speeding up measurement of precision turbine blades.
The question of how users can compare accuracy of one device to the next remains challenging

Aircraft manufacturers are finding noncontact metrology ever more useful. Its inherent high throughput and decreasing cost is complementing the industry’s ramp-up to meet the world’s appetite for more airplanes. However, throughput needs to be balanced with accuracy in finding the right applications as noncontact embraces a variety of devices.

“Noncontact metrology is either laser or optical based,” said Eric Nemitz director of sales North America of Automated Precision Inc. (API, Rockville, MD). “Typically, 3D laser metrology scans a line over a part, or the part is moved under the line.” Optical systems use one of a variety of multiple images and triangulation, typically photogrammetric systems or today more commonly fringe projection techniques ubiquitously known as white or blue light scanning. “A laser-based system will always be attached to a globally aligned device, such as a CMM, a portable arm, or a robot referenced by a laser tracker,” Nemitz said. White light scanners are also often attached to a movement device and usually require registration marks on the part or on fixtures to achieve the highest accuracies.

While noncontact has its advantages, so too do traditional touch trigger or scanning analog probes. It is all about accuracy and shape. “Prismatic features—circles, holes, slots, plain line points—have very tight tolerances

As technology continues to upend established business models …

By Clayton Copplestone*

The future is approaching faster than one can handle.

In 1998, Kodak – one of the darlings included in the proto-index ‘Nifty Fifty’ list of the largest US stocks – had 170,000 employees and sold 85 per cent of all photo paper worldwide.

Within just a few years, its business model was exposed to the blinding light of digital competition, and Kodak faded into bankruptcy.

What happened to Kodak will happen to a lot of industries in the next 10 years and, most people won’t see it coming.

Did you think in 1998 that three years later you would never take pictures on film again?

Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but have since followed Moore’s law (or the observation that computer chip processing power doubles every two years).

So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a time, before its superiority overwhelmed the mainstream in only a few short years. It will now happen again with artificial intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture, and jobs.

Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Welcome to the Exponential Age.

Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years. Uber is just a software tool. But despite owning zero cars Uber is now the biggest taxi company in the world. Likewise, Airbnb lays claims as the world’s largest hotel company with an empty property portfolio.

Artificial intelligence is also coming of

Ogle Models Uses 3D Printing to Help Develop Next Generation Business Class Airplane Seats for Zodiac Aerospace

Ogle Models Uses 3D Printing to Help Develop Next Generation Business Class Airplane Seats for Zodiac Aerospace

I only fly on an airplane once, maybe twice a year, and while I appreciate how much faster this mode of travel is (if everything is running according to schedule, that is), I don’t particularly enjoy the experience. Airports themselves are usually insanely busy, and if I don’t take a decongestant an hour before boarding, I have extremely painful ear issues upon descent. I hate the cramped airplane bathrooms, and I really don’t like the cramped seating space, as I don’t generally fly business or first class. But these days, 3D printing is often used to make the experience more comfortable, with innovations like 3D printed cocktail trays (business class only, unfortunately) and ClampHero, a 3D printed device that clamps to the seat back in front of you and securely holds your mobile devices. 3D printing is even being used to manufacture spare airplane parts, so passengers don’t have to be stuck on the runway quite as long if there’s a malfunction.
