Mad Minute stories from Monday, March 20th – Spokane, North Idaho News & Weather KHQ.com

PARIS (AP) — Arrests can’t come any easier than this.
French gendarmes called to a robbery found the suspected thief stuck in a hole he’d made with a hammer in a shop window.
The national gendarmerie on Sunday published a photo appearing to show the man half-in and half-out of the hole.
“Drunk, he robbed a shop but got stuck … in the window before being arrested,” the gendarmerie tweeted, with the hashtag “ThugLife.”
The 46-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning in the Pyrenees town of Mauleon-Licharre in southwest France, a duty officer for the regional gendarmerie told The Associated Press.
Firefighters were called to free the man, who was then taken into custody, said the officer, who wouldn’t be quoted by name, citing official policy.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A man who helped pitch Dos Equis beer as the Most Interesting Man in the World turned his attention from his favorite beer to his favorite beard by judging a competition called Vermont Beardies.
Actor Jonathan Goldsmith, who lives in Manchester and sports a closely cropped white beard that he maintains with a lice comb given to him by a veterinarian, was one of four judges who chose the contest’s winner in Burlington on Saturday.
This year’s honors went to Bryan Sturge, of Barre, who hasn’t cut his beard in almost two years.
The event benefits Make-a-Wish Vermont, which helps grant wishes to children living with life-threatening conditions. Organizers said Saturday night that they’d raised nearly $30,000.
The competition was judged

He was born in Newport News, Va., to Eunice Bassett Leyland and Walter Alfred Leyland, who preceded him in death. His younger brother, Thomas, also preceded him in death.

Walt, Shirley, and their two children spent most of their life as a family in Bucks County, Pa. Walt enjoyed time spent with family and friends, traveling, boating, sailing, bowling, model airplanes, an occasional snow skiing trip and turning the handle to make homemade ice cream.

He was a faithful member of, and served many years in, the local United Methodist Church, the last one being Williamsburg UMC.

He is remembered fondly for his love of science, his sense of humor, and his sayings like ‘Golly Pete’ and ‘Hot

Helping kids spread their wings

This is the latest in The Sun’s “Be a Volunteer ” series, focusing on people who join community nonprofits. Got a suggestion? Email it to news@lowellsun.com

DRACUT — When Deborah Scheetz earned her private pilot’s license, her friends gave her toy airplanes as a gag to make up for the real plane they couldn’t buy her.

It’s taken nearly two decades, but her collection has grown a bit since then. She and fellow Dracut resident Rosalie Dunbar are now the volunteer curators of the Top Fun Aviation Toy Museum, in Fitchburg, which boasts more than 3,000 aviation toys, from SpongeBob SquarePants planes to a radio-controlled flying model with a 10-foot wingspan.

It was a fascination with flight — its dramatic history and seemingly boundless possibilities — rather than a particular interest in the toys themselves that prompted the two friends to open the museum.

“We learned as we got more into (aviation) that there were a lot of kids who didn’t know about the possibilities of flight,” said Dunbar. “We thought if kids could get into aviation and see these job opportunities, it might change their lives.”

Scheetz and Dunbar first opened the nonprofit museum in Winchendon in 2000, before moving to their current space on Prichard Street in Fitchburg six years later.

Their displays range from the downright fun — a cardboard spaceship where children meet and fly to imaginary planets together — to the educational.

George Boardman: Nevada County leadership MIA as big economic opportunity goes up in smoke

Economic development in western Nevada County is a lot like the weather: Everybody talks about it but very little is actually done about it.

While Placer and other neighboring counties have economic development units that aggressively seek new business, our Board of Supervisors is content to parcel out political patronage to various local chambers of commerce and provide funding to the Economic Resource Council with the hope it can attract the high paying jobs we so desperately need.

The ERC is currently rolling the dice on virtual reality (VR) technology, a development that has created a lot of excitement but appears to be a slow build. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, said recently that it’s going to be several years before VR reaches its potential.

Facebook spent $2 billion to acquire Oculus, developer of the Rift VR headset, and plans to spend another $3 billion developing the business, much of the money going to developers of games and other attractions that make the expensive headsets worth buying.

Sales of the pricey headsets have failed to meet expectations, and some early developers have already closed their doors. Even the most optimistic forecasts won’t take your breath away: headset sales of 55 million units annually by 2022. Apple expects to ship 200 million iPhones this year.

But while the ERC tries to create a foothold in a technology that may either live up to the hype or become another 3-D television, we are missing

Progressland Person of the Week: Hyde man’s avionics career led him to the B2 Bomber

Howdy Veihdeffer’s career in avionics led him to work on the top secret B-2 Stealth Bomber program.

Veihdeffer, 67, was born and raised in Hyde — a son of the late Howard Sr., and Emma Veihdeffer. He graduated from St. Francis High School in 1967. In high school he worked at the former Riverside Market along Old Town Road, bagging groceries and putting them in people’s cars.

After graduation he got a job at Piper Aircraft. He worked there for 14 years until it closed.

He then went to work for Rockwell International in Columbus, Ohio — building the B1B bomber. He worked there for about 18 months and in 1987 he went to work for Northrop on the B2 Bomber program.

The B2 program was a top secret program and he needed government security clearances to work on it.

And when he was approached for the job, they couldn’t even tell him what it was for.

“A headhunter came to me and asked if I would like to work for Northrop,” Veihdeffer said. “I said sure, what will I be doing. Can’t tell you he said.”

“We weren’t allowed to tell anyone who we worked for,” Veihdeffer said.

They were also searched every day when they left to make sure they didn’t try to smuggle anything out of the company.

Veihdeffer was in quality assurance, where he would check all parts in the plane to make sure they were installed properly.

At first, he was located near Los Angeles, but in the last 10 years he was in Palmdale,

This Is Us stars debunk Jack death theories at packed PaleyFest panel

It wouldn’t be a proper discussion about the consistently tear-inducing hit NBC drama This Is Us, which just wrapped up its freshman season, if crying wasn’t involved — and leave it to star Milo Ventimiglia to make a packed PaleyFest audience at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater weep.

After a fan asked where the inspiration for his character, Pearson family patriarch Jack, came from, Ventimiglia revealed the person was sitting right in the audience. “Here we go. This is the time I cry: my father,” he shared before pointing out his parents in the crowd. Then he credited show creator Dan Fogelman, the writing staff, plus executive producers directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra with creating “this man who loves his wife, loves his kids, and it’s really as simple as that,” he said, getting visibly emotional. “I saw that in my own father,” he continued in a broken voice, “and there’s not a moment in my life that I don’t think about how he raised us, my sisters and I, and what he gave me just as a man.”

The poignant answer wrapped up an entertaining and insightful conversation at the Saturday night panel, which boasted the “biggest turnout for a PaleyFest event,” moderator Kristin Dos Santos of E! News acknowledged at the top of the chat. Joining Ventimiglia were costars Mandy Moore (Rebecca), Sterling K. Brown (Randall), Justin Hartley (Kevin), Chrissy Metz (Kate), Chris Sullivan (Toby), Ron Cephas Jones (William), and Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth), as
