Flight enthusiasts enjoy experimental fly-in, model competition

Serious business — Brodie Long, an engineer for The Spaceship Company builds model planes with his children Nora and Mike during Mojave’s Indoor RC and Glider Fly-in competition. Growing up in Oklahoma, Long said it took him 20 years to land his dream job in Mojave.

Flight enthusiasts of all ages gathered at the Stuart O. Witt Event Center at the Mojave Air and Space Port, April 14 to do what Mojave is best known for: to design, build and test experimental aircraft and to inspire the next generation.

Participants of the third annual Indoor RC and Glider Fly-in event tested their skills by building various balsa wood, hand- launch gliders while others built their own creations.

“These are one-of-a-kind, laser cut models designed and made just for this event,” explained Cam Martin from NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, speaking of the balsa models. Each year new designs are introduced, often depicting a new aircraft conceived at Mojave.

Martin encouraged beginners to build a Delta Dart model first because they are easy to build and almost impossible for them not to fly.

Brodie Long, an engineer for The Spaceship Company brought his children, Nora and Mike for family entertainment and education.

“The kids have fun building, plus it is just a good, fun and a friendly environment,” said Long. Growing up in Oklahoma, he said it took him 20 years to land his dream job in Mojave. “Anybody that knows anything about airplanes knows

Day: April 14, 2017

Python is the Arduino of software projects. It has a critical mass of libraries for anything from facial recognition and neural networks to robotics and remote sensing. And just like Arduino, I have yet to find the killer IDE for Python. Perhaps I just haven’t tried the right one yet, but it could be that I’m just doing Python wrong.

For Years I’ve Been IDLE

IDLE with interactive shell that has highlighting and code completion

I’m a Linux-only type of a guy so using IDLE for Python is a natural fit. It’s in the repositories for super quick and easy install and there’s basically zero configuration to be done. Generally speaking my preferred development environment is text editor and command line compiler. IDLE is just one step above that. You get a separate window for the shell and each Python file you’re working on. Have IDLE run your code and it saves the file, then launches it in the shell window.

For me, there are two important features of IDLE’s shell. The first is that it keeps an interactive session open after you run your Python code. This means that any globals that your script uses are still available, and that you can experiment with your code by calling functions (and classes, etc) in real time. The second desirable feature is that while using this interactive shell, IDLE supports code completion and docstring support (it gives you hints for what parameters a function accepts/requires).

But simplicity has a tough time

WATCH: Passengers enjoy flight ‘back in time’ over Savannah in restored 1929 Ford Tri-Motor

Eight excited passengers crowded around pilot Ashley Messenger on Thursday, eyes beaming. With a grin, the retired pilot explained the safety precautions necessary for the flight they were about to take — proper seatbelt fastening method, no smoking, a typical pre-flight briefing.

That is, until he said, “We’re going back in time today.”

The group had gathered in the lobby of Signature Flight Support’s terminal at Hilton/Savannah International Airport to hop aboard a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor, fully restored by the Experimental Aircraft Association.

The aluminum behemoth, nicknamed the “Tin Goose,” was intended to create a new market for flying machines: airline travel. Airplanes weren’t yet an established means of mass transit — in fact, most folks thought of them as war machines.

Messenger said the Tri-Motor was Henry Ford’s attempt to change that perception.

“The thing is, it doesn’t look like the inside of an airplane, it looks like the inside of a train. It was designed that way. Ford said, ‘If we’re gonna do this, we’re gonna do it right.’ He put the power of the whole Ford Motor Company behind it,” Messenger said. “They had a PR problem in those days that they had to overcome, and that airplane helped.”

The plane has only two rows of passenger seating, so every seat is a window seat. The mint green interior and woodgrain trim are a nod to classic train-style design, and the brown leather seats are equipped with modern seat belts.

The passengers piled into the Tri-Motor, peering out the windows at the propeller

What you need to know about Thunder 2017.
Rachel Aretakis/Courier-Journal

Thunder Over Louisville spectators likely never see the faces of the pilots flying the planes nor the crew supporting them.

But there is something noteworthy about the UPS Boeing 757 scheduled to fly in Saturday’s airshow. It will be flown and supported by a team of women who work for UPS – a team that includes two pilots, an observer in the cockpit, one aircraft maintenance supervisor and two aircraft maintenance technicians.

“To get this group of females together to collaborate on a project like this is phenomenal,” said Stella Burton, an aircraft maintenance technician who has worked with UPS for more than a decade.

Boeing SC’s first 787-10 takes flight in North Charleston

Updated: Monday, April 3, 2017, 12:30 p.m.

For the first time ever, a new Boeing jet was first flown out of South Carolina when the new 787-10 Dreamliner took to the sky on Friday.

The 787-10 Dreamliner was built from start to finish in North Charleston, and it took off from the site at 9:38 a.m.

Several thousand Boeing S.C. employees gathered to watch the newest and longest Dreamliner take flight. A nearby VIP tent was filled with Boeing executives, customers and suppliers, as well as S.C. politicians and business leaders.

The jet took off on runways adjacent to Boeing South Carolina’s campus that are also shared by Charleston International Airport and Joint Base Charleston.

The first flight took 4 hours, 58 minutes. The jet landed Friday afternoon and taxied into Boeing S.C.’s delivery center to a cheering crowd.

Pilots Tim Berg and Mike Bryan, both captains for Boeing Test and Evaluation, performed tests on flight controls, systems and handling qualities during the flight. They flew the jet around the Lowcountry, along the S.C. coastline and quickly across the North Carolina border.

“From takeoff to landing, the airplane handled beautifully and just as expected,” said Berg, chief 787 pilot.

Final assembly on the 787-10 began late last year at Boeing S.C. President Donald Trump spoke during the rollout ceremony in February for the aircraft. The 787-10 will now undergo comprehensive flight testing before customer deliveries in the first half of 2018.

The 787-10 model, which is made of parts from global suppliers, is produced from

Col. Randal Efferson, commander of the 187th explains why they are in the top 5 to get the new F-35 jet.
Rebecca Burylo/Advertiser

Col. Randal Efferson arrived at Eglin Air Force Base seven years ago for his first look at the brand new F-35 Lighting II jet.

He felt it was an honor to be one of the first to gaze upon one of the biggest technological advancements to come out of Lockheed Martin, which is expected to carry the Air Force into the next generation of air power.

The current commander of the 187th Fighter Wing, the Montgomery-based Air National Guard Unit, Efferson was an experienced combat pilot flying F-16 Fighting Falcons when he was one of two guardsmen selected to help create the F-35 training program. That same training is used today to teach combat pilots transitioning to the F-35 how to fly and maintain the $95 million jet.
