Want to Save Europe? Learn From Poland

Beginning in 2017, the Polish opposition began rebuilding its entire political program. Liberal parties and organizations held conferences on how to restore the rule of law and repair state institutions. But we also knew that would not be enough. In order to win, liberals realized that we needed to discuss other topics and policies, like ecology, health care and welfare. Protesting violations of the rule of law, however justified, is reactive. Only by building a rich democratic agenda can we reverse the damage done by the government. And that is what we’ve begun to do. It seems to be working, especially on social issues like L.G.B.T. rights. It is now the illiberals who are forced to react to what liberals put forward.

If liberals want to win elections, they have to learn how to tell stories that give voters a sense of optimism and purpose — not stories that promise to revert to the status quo before the illiberals arrived on the political scene.

The current struggle is taking place in the context of European Parliament elections. For most voters, Brussels equals boredom. It is the embodiment of distant, inaccessible politics. For decades, European liberals felt they didn’t have worry about elections because the bloc’s complex system of procedures and regulations would keep their politics and policies in place. For quite a while, it seemed that a real European had to be a lawyer.

French woman sues Boeing seeking at least US$276 million over Ethiopian crash

PARIS: A French woman whose husband was killed in the March crash of a Boeing 737 MAX airliner in Ethiopia has filed a US lawsuit against the planemaker seeking at least US$276 million in damages, her lawyer said on Tuesday (May 20).

The crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 near the capital Addis Ababa killed all 157 passengers and crew aboard.

The complaint alleges Boeing failed to inform pilots properly about the risks posed by software meant to prevent the 737 MAX from stalling which repeatedly lowered the plane’s nose due to a faulty sensor data, according to US attorney Nomaan Husain.

“Once again corporate greed has placed profits over safety with tragic consequences for the public,” Husain said in a written statement. “We have learned that Boeing relied on a single sensor that had been previously flagged in over 200 incident reports submitted to the FAA (US Federal Aviation Administration).”

Husain told a Paris news conference he was seeking a minimum of US$276 million in damages for client Nadege Dubois-Seex.

Boeing said last week it had completed an update to the 737 MAX’s MCAS software and was in the process of submitting a plan for related pilot training to the FAA.

Airbus Foresees More Regulatory Scrutiny After Boeing’s 737 MAX Crashes

Airbus SE’s new chief operating officer Tuesday said the European plane maker expects more regulatory scrutiny after two crashes by Boeing Co.’s 737 MAX jets have raised questions about safety oversight.

Regulators “will become stricter,” Michael Schoellhorn said. He added that oversight of Airbus wasn’t lax, but “could there be an effect that they double or triple check even more? Could be.” What the fallout might be is still unclear, he added.

Things to do in DC on Memorial Day weekend 2019

The D.C. area will host many events and opportunities to honor fallen military members throughout Memorial Day weekend. Here’s what you need to know.

Memorial Day Parade

It’s the nation’s largest Memorial Day event, drawing thousands of spectators along Constitution Avenue. The National Memorial Day Parade marks its 15th year and honors all members of the military, especially those who died during service.

The American Veterans Center describes the event as a moving timeline of American history that draws on traditions from past Memorial Day parades, going back to the beginning of the holiday just after the Civil War.

This year’s grand marshals and special celebrity guests include the heroes of D-Day, “Criminal Minds” star Joe Mantegna and celebrity chef Robert Irvine as well as musical performances by Justin Moore, Quaid James, Kiefer Sutherland, the winner of “The Voice” and The USO Show Troupe.

The parade kicks off at 2 p.m. and goes along Constitution Avenue, Northwest from 7th to 17th street.

The best place to watch is anywhere along the parade route, but the American Veterans Center said the steps of the National Archives provide a great view. The National Archives/Penn Quarter/Navy Memorial stops on the Green and Yellow lines are one block away from the parade route. Those who can’ make it out to the parade can also tune into a livestream on YouTube.

New on Amazon Prime in June 2019: Editor’s picks

Fleabag season 2

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag has returned for a second and likely final season that is equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. Set one year after season 1, Waller-Bridge’s titular protagonist is still grappling with the death of her best friend, Boo, and breaking the fourth wall to address the audience. But this season also presents a new love interest for Fleabag: a priest (Andrew Scott) who is marrying her dad and stepmom, which is especially humorous considering Fleabag is an atheist. Fleabag season 2 is a bittersweet goodbye to the audience, and a poignant portrait of women and the choices they face.  Tiffany Kelly
