PARIS: Dassault Systemes shoots for the ‘digital universe’

In the eyes of technology company Dassault Systèmes, the virtual world is quickly becoming master of the physical world.

The concept, which the French company is highlighting at the Paris air show, is abstract but fairly straightforward.

It rests on the fact that advances in computer models have enabled aerospace companies to design and test components using increasingly complex digital models in a “virtual universe”, says Dassault vice-president of aerospace and defence Michel Tellier.

As technology advances, physical tests – wing load and bird strike tests, for instance – aim more to validate the theoretical models than they do to validate performance of actual components, Tellier says.

“More and more, the model is the virtual master,” he says. “The only way to verify that any of this stuff works is to do it in a virtual world.”

Soon, “you will break the wing to verify the model. You won’t break the wing to verify the wing”, he says.

Three “virtual universes” impact aviation, according to Tellier.

One universe models the design of aviation components and aircraft. Sophisticated computer platforms mesh a range of data, laying out specifications of individual parts and showing how those parts integrate and are effected by larger systems, says Tellier.

Another universe models the manufacturing process, detailing components’ requirements and constraints, and helping experts design production methods, he says.

A third universe models aircraft operation, detailing how aircraft are used and how they perform in service, according

Model airplanes flying high for a charitable cause – Black Hills Fox

model airplanes were flying high for charity on Sunday.

The Rapid City Propbusters Club was raising money for the Academy of Model Aeronautics Foundation.

Many of the planes could fly up to 400 feet in the air and even had little figurines in the cockpit.

Because of this foundation, many high schoolers have been able to afford technical school.

Rapid City Propbusters Club Event Director Jim Tiller says, “The big buzz word in education now is STEM. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and we have that in spades. All the things we do are quite technical when you come down to it: the theory of flight, how to do it, how to make it go. Those are very technical issues so we offer a lot of education in that realm for young people.”

The Propbusters have been a part of the community since the 1950’s promoting the development of model aviation as a recognized sport and worthwhile recreation activity.

If you would like to donate to the foundation, visit the Aeronautic Academy’s website.

Boeing Outlines Notional NMA Timetable

‘)})();
//–

Boeing has outlined the design of its projected new midsize airplane (NMA), but is keeping the details close to its chest as it waits for the expected response from Airbus.

Despite this, the manufacturer has confirmed several new configuration details for the first time including the use of a fifth-generation composite wing, a “hybrid” composite fuselage, next-generation digital architecture and super-efficient, very-high-bypass turbofans. A conceptual graphic and side-view profile also showed a clear melding of 777 and 787 design features.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president and general manager of airplane development Mike Delaney remains coy about the precise meaning of a “hybrid” fuselage, but it is believed to reflect the proposed geometry of the cross section rather than the choice of structural materials. The cross section is therefore expected to combine the width and

AerCap orders 30 Boeing 787-9 jets

PARIS Aircraft leasing giant AerCap (AER.N) placed an order worth $8.1 billion at list prices for 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners at the Paris Airshow, in a vote of confidence for long-haul aircraft amid declining orders for many wide-body models.

The world’s largest independent leasing company is also the largest owner of 787s, with 122 in its portfolio including those bought directly from Boeing and those acquired from airlines in sale-and-leaseback transactions.

AerCap Chief Executive Aengus Kelly called the 787 the “premier wide-body” and said the aircraft would serve parts of the world where traffic is growing fast, such as Asia.

AerCap did not, however, join a number of other leasing companies in placing an immediate order for Boeing’s new single-aisle model, the 737 MAX 10, launched earlier on Monday.

“We think the MAX 10 will be a very good airplane and we are talking to our friends at Boeing,” Kelly said.

At an industry conference earlier this year, Kelly voiced concerns that the five members of the 737 MAX family might “cannibalize each other” and said he was cautious about

Body parts found in Honesdale freezer identified – News …

Human remains discovered last month in a Wayne County freezer belong to a man who, until Wednesday, had been listed as a missing person.

Coroner Edward Howell said that DNA testing confirmed that the remains found early April 11 at 61 Leonard Road, Pleasant Mount belong to Joseph Mastropole, 54.

State police at Honesdale later said the remains discovered in a freezer in the basement of the home have been confirmed as Mastropole. The remains discovered in a burn barrel outside are pending identification.

Mastropole’s girlfriend reported to state police that she had not spoken to him in weeks. A routine welfare check evolved into a gruesome death investigation.

Instead of finding Mastropole at his Leonard Street address, state police encountered a Florida man, Gaston Gomez, 57, who initially gave a fake name and claimed to be Mastropole’s roommate.

Mastropole and Gomez had been childhood friends and the latter had been living with Mastropole for the last year, Trooper Mark Keyes, a public information officer for the Dunmore-based Troop R, said.

State police first met Gomez at 8:30 a.m. April 10 and, two hours later, returned to the home and were directed by Gomez in a phone conversation to meet him by a pond behind the home. There, troopers noticed a large pole barn with ventilation equipment they suspected was used to grow marijuana.

Troopers returned again with a search warrant around 3:18 p.m. and heard a gunshot as they approached. The incident turned into a
