Boeing Is Top Seller at Paris Air Show — WSJ

Plane maker beats out rival Airbus in orders as both attract robust single-aisle jet demand

LE BOURGET, France — Boeing Co. beat Airbus SE in the annual jetliner-orders bonanza at the Paris Air Show, but both came out winners in one crucial way: Demand for both plane makers’ most popular single-aisle jets remains buoyant.

Overall orders for planes have slowed recently, after a yearslong run of supercharged growth fanned by fast-growing budget carriers and cash-rich Mideast buyers. These buyers have stayed away from bigger jets, making the so-called narrowbody, or single-aisle, market the key to the industry’s medium-term health.

At the end of the show, Boeing claimed $75 billion in deals for 571 new planes. Airbus said it secured $42 billion in deals for 144 firm orders, along with 202 other looser-commitment plane agreements. That was better than many analysts had expected.

The flurry of orders and commitments secured by Boeing, the world’s No. 1 plane maker, was fueled by its launch of a new narrowbody model, the 737 Max 10. Boeing got 16 customers to sign up to the new plane, including United Continental Holdings Inc. It exits the Paris show with 361 deals for the new plane.

Domeward bound

If you think indoor planes are limited to those made of paper and the battery-powered sort that are likely to earn a scolding from your mother, then you might consider a visit to the Kibbie Dome this weekend.

Inside, you’ll find multiple transparent planes in flight, powered by a rubber band and weighing little more than a dollar bill. Beneath these ethereal, floating devices sit their creators, people from all over the country who have gathered for the Kibbie Dome Annual, an indoor free flight model plane competition.

Constructed of light balsa wood, plastic film and composite materials like carbon fibers, these model airplanes have a typical wingspan of 22 inches and are propelled by a wind-up rubber band motor. A thousand turns of the motor can send a well-built plane into the air for more than 25 minutes. Once launched, all their fliers have to do is pull up a chair, sit down and watch.

The goal is for planes to stay in the air for as long as possible. Flights are timed to determine winners. Competitors fly nine rounds in their flight class, with the best two flights determining placement.

Jake Palmer first attended the yearly event with his parents when he was 12. Twenty-five years later, the Vancouver, Wash., resident now coordinates the event.

Palmer got his start by flying radio-controlled airplanes. Through that interest, he learned about indoor free flight models and got connected with other fliers in the Portland area. The hobby has since taken him to competitions all over

£1.3bn order for 50 aircraft a huge boost for Bombardier’s workforce in Northern Ireland

By John Mulgrew

June 22 2017

Bombardier has landed a huge order for 50 planes part-made in Belfast – worth up to £1.3bn.

Budget Indian carrier SpiceJet has signed a letter of intent for up to 50 Q400 turboprop planes from the Canadian-owned giant.

The Belfast team designs and manufactures the wing-mounted flight components for the Q400 turboprop.

Bombardier’s president of commercial aircraft, Fred Cromer, said: “We are proud to sign this agreement as it is another demonstration of the Q400’s superiority in the turboprop market.

“When finalised, the repeat order will increase the Q400 aircraft fleet in the fast-growing market in the Asia-Pacific region and will launch the high-density 86-passenger model of the Q400 aircraft in India.”

Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of SpiceJet, said: “I am delighted that we will be acquiring 50 Q400 planes. SpiceJet operates India’s largest regional fleet and is the only organised operator in this space.

“The acquisition will help us further increase connectivity to smaller towns and cities and help realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ensuring that every Indian can fly.”

Since 2010, SpiceJet has taken delivery of 15 of Bombardier’s Q400 aircraft.

Aside from the potentially huge deal with SpiceJet, Bombardier also signed a separate letter of intent with South African carrier CemAir, for two of its Q400s.

This week, speaking at the Paris Air Show, Fred Cromer said Bombardier is expecting to announce a further significant C Series deal

Model airplane club grounded by park service – Pocono Record

A local model airplane club fears the National Park Service is about to clip its wings.

The superintendent of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area is booting the Roxbury Area model airplane Club and its 60 members from their home field at Hialeah Airpark in Delaware Water Gap.

The club flies remote-controlled planes from the field on weekends and occasionally weekdays. The park service told the club it has to go because of noise complaints from local beaches in the park area.

“Last August we were told they are renewing our permit for the last time and then we would have to leave,” club representative Robert Clark said. Its final day is scheduled for September 30.

The National Park service said it initially intended to close the park in 2016.

“The National Park Service has determined that noise from model airplanes at the Hialeah Airfield has an adverse impact to the visitor experience at several of the most popular recreation sites at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, including Smithfield Beach, Turtle Beach, the Delaware River, and the historic River Road,” park service Spokeswoman Kathleen Sandt said. “As such, the NPS is closing the Hialeah Airfield once RAMAC’s current permit expires in October.”

Clark said the noise complaints are bogus.

“Half our airplanes are electric,” he said. “We have never been presented with any real data that supports his claim. We can assure you that we are not as noisy as the

Gustave Whitehead: First In Flight or Fake News?

Some notable events in our state’s aviation history.

Connecticut is home to several museums dedicated to our state’s aviation heritage.

A January 1986 Connecticut Magazine story about Bill O’Dwyer’s attempts to recreate Gustave Whitehead’s vehicle and prove that he achieved flight in 1901, two years before the Wright brothers.

“There is a law applied to all motions or mechanical movements and in order to fly man must understand the laws of flight.” — Gustave Whitehead

Andy Kosch did not intend to fly. Not today.

His plane, if you could call it that, had white wings that unfurled from an open-air, all-wood, canoe-size fuselage complete with a pole in its center acting as a makeshift mast for the sail-like wings. The craft seemed part steampunk-art project and part bird-sculpture parade float, or a mythical Viking vessel — more suited to carrying the heroes of Valhalla into battle than a mere mortal of the modern era.

It was Dec. 7, 1986, at Bridgeport Airport (today called Sikorsky Memorial Airport).

New York’s Great Scenic Ride

Neighborhood: Sheepshead Bay, Exit 8

Overview: There’s a sliver of Brooklyn trapped between the Belt Parkway and the bay, creating a nano-neighborhood that is one block wide and 20 blocks long, and is a port of call for foodie types. Emmons Avenue is its main drag, lined with boats docked at the Sheepshead Bay Piers and two dozen restaurants, many of them catering to the neighborhood’s immigrants from Turkey, Russia and other Caucasus countries. Jacques Gautier, a Brooklyn chef who owns the Park Slope restaurant Palo Santo, has been traveling the Belt for decades to fish, kayak and explore, and this area has long been his go-to for lunch. His current favorite is Cherry Hill Gourmet Grocery, a 24-hour supermarket with free parking that offers prepared foods from Eastern Europe. “Almost every time,” Mr. Gautier said, “I stop there and I get stuff to take for a picnic.”

Other options include Randazzo’s Clam Bar (known not just for clams but for its spicy red sauce) and Roll-N-Roaster, a 45-year-old roast beef sandwich spot that is the favorite of David Meltzer, a native Brooklynite, a lawyer and an active member of the Five Borough Bicycle Club. “They’ll give you a free bottle of water if you show up with a bike helmet,” he said. Follow the city Department of Transportation’s recommended bike routes until you rejoin the greenway at the western end of Emmons Avenue.

Don’t Miss: This is the best place to eat along the Belt,
