75 years later, French 'HistoPad' Offers New View of D-Day

The French and the Americans are working together again on a project marking a major event in World War II. This time, they are giving people the chance to travel back in time and experience the invasion of Normandy, France.

United States-led Allied forces invaded northern France on June 6, 1944. The Normandy landings led to the end of Germany’s control of Western Europe.

Seventy-five years later, the event is being remembered at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Ohio. Visitors now have the chance to virtually transport themselves back in time to D-Day.

To do this, they need an electronic tablet, called a HistoPad. Visitors make movements on the device to see current images of historic places with re-creations of them in the past. They can also press on images to see videos, pictures and maps from 1944.

The new way of learning about the Normandy landings is part of the museum’s D-Day observances.

Boeing says decision on new airplane will come this year

EVERETT — The Boeing Co. will decide by the end of the year whether to offer an all-new airplane, the aerospace giant told The Daily Herald.

It was the first definitive statement on the timing of a decision since the 737 Max crisis began in March.

Even aerospace analysts were uncertain how Boeing would proceed with a decision on the new “middle-market” airplane, informally dubbed the 797.

Since a second 737 Max crash March 10 led to the model’s grounding, there has been speculation that Boeing might defer a decision on a new passenger jet until next year or even later.

However, Boeing said Friday it would stick to the time frame promised Jan. 30 by CEO Dennis Muilenberg, before the Max grounding — that a board of directors decision on the new airplane, sometimes called the NMA, would be made in 2019.

Boeing spokesman Paul Bergman said in an email: “Our focus is on returning the 737 Max to service, however, we are still working through the NMA business case and once we complete that work, we will make a decision this year on whether to offer the airplane. If we decide to offer the airplane and the market responds positively, we will proceed with a launch decision sometime in 2020.”

Before the 737 Max grounding, many assumed the new 797 would be announced at the Paris Air Show the week of June 17-23. A coalition of elected officials, businesses and unions created by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee was anticipating a

West Bexar County man, 71, accused of shooting, killing wife during argument identified

BEXAR COUNTY, TexasUPDATE: The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect accused of shooting and killing his wife as Louis Joseph Benevento, 71. A mugshot has not yet been released.

The Medical Examiner’s Office idenified the 62-year-old victim as Alicia Wills.

(Previously)

Investigators with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office say it’s likely a 71-year-old man will face a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of his wife early Wednesday.

Deputies found the 62-year-old woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds after answering a call around 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 6900 block of Luckey Path in far West Bexar County.

She was rushed to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Deputies detained her husband at the scene and took him into custody for questioning.

They say it appears the couple had been involved in an argument that escalated, with the man shooting his wife.

Upon searching the area, deputies said they found several shell casings in the driveway.

Detectives who arrived later also appeared to be searching a sport utility vehicle in the driveway of the couple’s home.

On the ground near the vehicle were what appeared to be parts of smashed model airplanes.

Investigators did not say right away whether those broken items had any connection to the couple’s dispute.

Detectives say their investigation is

Wood | In the skies above Eastern Oregon | Columnists

From a very early age, I have been interested in — or perhaps more correctly stated, enthralled by — airplanes. My grade school drawing-doodles were frequently rudimentary depictions of the “dogfight” scenes (much of which was actual archival footage) I had seen on the two-season run of the TV program “Black Sheep Squadron,” which was must-see viewing for an impressionable second- or third-grader who was “lucky” enough to occasionally hear a sonic boom growing up in 1970s Eastern Oregon.

I can recall our next-door neighbor in Echo, a then-nonagenarian born well before the turn of the 20th century, regaling us with a story about the historical significance of the first “aero-plane” sighting over the town when she was a young lass. I mowed her lawn as a kid and used some of the earnings to buy a model of a bubble-top canopy P-51D Mustang, which my dad and I assembled and painted at our kitchen table. That model still hangs in the basement of our house, 40 years later, in the bedroom formerly occupied by son Willie.

Apparently, the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree; numerous models constructed by him hang near the Mustang, including a highly detailed B-17 bomber. I bought him a ride on a B-17 for his ninth birthday — the first time he flew in anything other than our friend’s crop-dusting helicopter.

When our family attended my cousin’s wedding in Homer, Alaska, some years ago, Willie and I were late to the reception (although we did witness

Wildfires rage in Israel during heatwave

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Firefighters on Thursday battled wildfires that scorched swathes of forests in central Israel, forcing some small towns to be evacuated, during a heatwave that brought record temperatures to parts of the country.

Rescue efforts focused on a wooded area between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, where ground teams and airplane tankers fought back the flames for hours. By nightfall, the fires were mostly under control, according to police.

Some 3,500 residents of small towns were evacuated, officials said. More than a dozen houses burned down, local media reported.

Jerusalem, which sits higher up on hilltops, recorded temperatures of 37.5 degrees Celsius (99.5 Fahrenheit). Moving west toward the Mediterranean, the heat grew much more stifling. One town near Tel Aviv hit 43.5 degrees Celsius, according to the Israel Meteorological Service.

The heatwave was expected to continue into Friday, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached out to nearby countries to see if they could help if the wildfires worsen.

Flashback Friday: the history of air freight

In previous Flashback Friday articles, various aspects of the history of trucking, railroads and shipping have been covered. Today’s article is an overview of the history of air cargo. FreightWaves has three experts covering air cargo/air freight on an ongoing basis – Jesse Cohen, Cathy Roberson and Scott Case. Look for their articles on FreightWaves.com.

Aviation begins, and air cargo follows soon thereafter

Orville and Wilbur Wright flew their airplane for the first time on December 17, 1903. Since then air travel has revolutionized the world in countless ways. When airplanes first took to the skies, the mere idea of an airplane (or aeroplanes as they were known then) was astounding. Man had wanted to fly for thousands of years, but now it was a reality. But only 115 years ago, the concept seemed unbelievable. Now, airplanes enable quick travel for millions daily around the globe; and millions of packages are shipped by air freight every day. In addition, advancements in aircraft led to the development of rockets and the beginnings of man’s exploration of space.

In the years following the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, aviation spread. Within a few years those promoting aviation were seeking practical uses for the airplane. At about the same time that commercial trucks were first being produced, those promoting aviation sought to carry freight by air.

The first practical demonstration of air freight took place
