Kids Can’t Fly Model Airplanes When Trump Comes to Bedminster

BEDMINSTER, NJ — President Donald Trump is planning to spend Labor Day weekend in Bedminster, according to flight restrictions issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. And the impact is not only affecting local airports but also model aircraft and drone hobbyists and children.

Trump recently spent this past weekend in the area and prior to that an 11-day “working” vacation at his Trump National Golf Course last week.

Each time the President visits Bedminster, it creates a VIP Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that prevents manned and unmanned aircraft from flying in certain places.

“The frequency and length of the President’s visits have caused a negative impact on nearly 2,000 model aircraft and drone hobbyists in the area, including many kids,” the Academy of Model Aeronautics’ (AMA) stated.

Negative impacts include the cancellation of a recent boy scout event and an event at the Somerset County 4-H Fair.

Due to the temporary flight restriction issued during President Trump’s June visit to the Bedminster area, The Washington Crossing RC Flyers in Hopewell was forced to cancel its Boy Scout Rocket Launch event June 10 at the last minute, the AMA noted.

Members of the Broken Props Airplane Club, a model airplane club associated with 4-H, were also not able to fly their model airplanes and rockets at the Somerset County 4-H Fair in Bridgewater in early August due to Trump’s extended visit.

Rogue Eagles lift off for charity at Agate Skyways – Entertainment …

A patriotic tribute to military veterans will open the 39th annual Rogue Eagles RC Club’s Air Show this weekend.

“The National Anthem will be sung as a radio-controlled model airplane flies overhead pulling an American flag,” says Larry Cogdell, the club’s public relations officer. “That will be followed by our Patriotic Flight, with six pilots taking off at one time.”

These pilots stay on the ground and use battery-powered transmitters to fly their fuel-powered or electric model airplanes. These smaller replicas, some of World War I or World War II planes, leave the ground the same way any airplane does: They speed along a runway until their wings generate enough lift — the upward force that overcomes the plane’s weight and holds it in the air.

“Most of our airplanes are scale models of real aircraft such as the American Super Decathlon, Super Sportster and Russian Yak-54,” Cogdell says. “Some of them are so realistic. We have what we call radial engines that mimic World War II engines. They sound totally real because they are totally real. They’re just small.”

Twenty-six different flight acts will be presented along the club’s landing strip, a runway 60 feet wide and 600 feet long at Agate Skyways. The two-hour shows will be at noon Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25-26. Gates open at 11 a.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

“When the club decided to make the air show a charity event, it chose to not ask

Harvey Likely to Be 1st Hurricane to Strike Texas Since 2008

Harvey, which is set to strengthen into the first hurricane to strike Texas since 2008, forced workers off Gulf of Mexico platforms, sent cotton rallying and has airlines preparing for flight disruptions.

Now a tropical storm, Harvey “is expected to become a hurricane by Friday,” the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory issued at 4 a.m. Central Daylight Time.

“It could intensify right up to landfall on Friday,” said Jeff Masters, co-founder of Weather Underground in Ann Arbor, Michigan. “I expect a Category 1 hurricane at landfall, but I cannot rule out a Category 2.”

Harvey is expected to bring multiple hazards including heavy rainfall, storm surge and possible hurricane conditions to parts of the Texas coast on Friday. Heavy rainfall is expected to spread across portions of south, central and eastern Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley from Friday through early next week and could cause life-threatening flooding, according to the advisory.

The Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to Lake Charles, Louisiana, is home to nearly 30 refineries — making up about 7 million barrels a day

Scientists are Running Out of Space for Climate Data

(Inside Science) — Climate science has gotten big. Debates about the research, its implications and the need for corrective action erupt everywhere from Middle American dinner tables to Capitol Hill and the bowels of social media. But climate science has gotten big in another sense, too — one of sheer data volume. Mathematical models of Earth’s climate are producing so much data that scientists may soon be forced to give some of it up.

When it comes to understanding Earth’s climate, the actual measurements of things like rainfall and temperature, even when built up over the course of decades, can only get you so far. To predict hypothetical scenarios and tease out what’s causing what, scientists use computer programs that simulate the complex forces at work. By “seeding” these models with conditions on a given day and then watching how they play out over years or centuries, scientists can conduct virtual experiments that would be impossible in real life.

“A climate model is really like a virtual laboratory,” said Allison Baker, a computational scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. “You can ask ‘what if’ questions, like ‘what if the Arctic ice all melts?'”

As climate models run, they produce detailed snapshots of conditions around the globe at hourly, daily or monthly intervals. And because the climate is chaotic, simulations don’t always play out the same way, so scientists run them over and over again. This quickly adds up to vast amounts of data that are difficult to store

The Way We Board Planes Spreads More Disease

This gives airlines a special responsibility as outbreaks occur. The decisions they make about who to board, and whether to fly at all, can have widespread consequences. And, according to new research, most carriers could do a better job than they do now. By changing how they board passengers, and perhaps by using different types of planes, they could stop people being infected so readily, the study shows.

The research, led by a cross-disciplinary team at Arizona State University, uses a mathematical model to predict how many people will be infected using different boarding methods. It considers a situation where a single, unidentified person on a plane is infected with Ebola, and how that infection might spread depending on where the person sits, and the way in which the person enters the cabin in the first place.

The bad news is the current way of doing things actually produces the worst results. Boarding people in zones–first class first, business next, back-of-the-plane last, and so on–means that the greatest possible number of people are likely to come into contact with the infected person in Seat 10A. The zonal method sees passengers cluster in aisles as everyone waits to sit down. Mr. Seat 10A, for instance, hovers over the first nine rows as he makes his way to seat.

Zonal boarding may be efficient for airlines and help maintain the distinction between passenger classes. But it’s poor from a health point of view. “The policies that
