Air Force Signs Contract for 2 Presidential Aircraft

The Air Force, which has been looking for ways to lower the cost of new Air Force One planes, agreed Friday to buy two Boeing 747-8 jumbo jets that were ordered but never delivered to a now-defunct Russian airline.

Two people close to the matter confirmed earlier this week that the Air Force and Boeing were in talks about the two planes that were still in the company’s inventory. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been publicly announced.

The contract details, including costs, were not provided on Friday. But President Donald Trump has complained about the high cost of new presidential planes, even threatening at one point to cancel the order.

“This award is a significant step towards ensuring an overall affordable program,” said Darlene Costello, the Air Force’s principal deputy assistant secretary for acquisition. “As we move forward, we will continue to seek and implement cost savings opportunities.”

The list price for a Boeing 747-8 is $386.8 million, according to Boeing’s website. It was not clear whether that price would apply to planes that are already built and sitting in Boeing’s inventory. Modifications to accommodate security, communications and other presidential requirements would have to be done, and would increase the final price.

Last December, Trump complained on Twitter about the cost of new Air Force One planes. “Costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!” the president-elect tweeted.

A month later, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg met with Trump and

DCF Model Casts A Bearish Outlook On Boeing

Overview

Boeing’s (BA) stock price has grown 32% in the last six months, but this article will argue the case for a bearish outlook on the company’s future performance. The company produced lower total revenue figures last year, lower net earnings and may be subject to market risks in the future. The DCF model produces a valuation below the current share price.

Thesis

While Boeing continue to innovate their product lines with more fuel efficient technology, the demand for the fuel efficient planes may be lacklustre dues to airlines facing relatively low costs of production. This is because oil prices have been in the doldrums for the last three years, and therefore airlines are not facing the pressures they once were to improve fuel efficiency. Commercial airlines therefore are not updating their fleets as regularly as Boeing would like. This effect has caused a reduction in the number of orders for Boeing planes, taking 100 less orders in 2016 than in 2015.

Earnings from commercial airplanes fell from $5.16 billion to $3.13 billion from 2015 to 2016 and therefore caused net earnings to fall from $5.18 billion to $4.895 (Source: Boeing SEC 10K). With commercial airplane production being the largest component of revenue generation, a fall in the demand for commercial aircraft will cause Boeing to underperform. Furthermore in 2016, Boeing’s operating margin has decreased in the last three years form 8.23% in 2014 to 6.17% in 2016 showing how the company’s profitability has decreased

Geneseo prepares for Trains, Planes & Automobiles

Geneseo’s 12th annual Trains, Planes  Automobiles festival will be Sept. 7-9 in Geneseo.

Geneseo’s 12th annual Trains, Planes  Automobiles festival will be Sept. 7-9 in Geneseo.

This year’s celebration gets underway Thursday, Sept. 7, when the GenAir pilots host the National Stearman Fly-In. Members of the public can view the World War II aircrafts land and take off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gen-Air Park, east of Geneseo on U.S. Route 6.

The airport display will include a two-seat aerobatic plane, built by Bob Johnson, airport manager. The plane is painted to resemble a P-51, he said, and added it took him more than years to build. “I wanted an aerobatic plane, and I wanted a plane that will go fast and be aerobatic, and mine will go up to 200 miles per hour.”

Returning this year will be “Cruise the Canal” tours of the historic Hennepin Canal on Friday, Sept. 8.

Rhonda Ludwig, executive director of the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce said, “The tours started at Trains, Planes Automobiles, a few years ago and after not offering them one year, we learned they continue to be a big hit so we are including them again this year. They are a great asset to the weekend activities, and give people an opportunity to see and hear all the Hennepin has to offer, with facts about the history of the canal.”

The tours last approximately 90 minutes, departing at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Aerospace program launches at SC high schools

Over the next few months, high school students will design an airplane cockpit seat, and produce it on a 3-D printer, from inside their North Charleston classroom.

R.B. Stall High School is one of six high schools in the state participating in a pilot program to introduce aerospace engineering to students.

Some high schools already offer aerospace or engineering courses. But this four-course curriculum is more robust, said Adrianne Beasley, aerospace initiatives director for the S.C. Council on Competitiveness, an industry advocacy group.

Educators and industry leaders say they hope the new program will interest more students in aerospace careers and will set them up for further education or training.

The state’s growing aerospace sector demands more workers. Boeing S.C. builds three Dreamliner derivatives in North Charleston, employing more than 7,000 people at its Lowcountry operations. Aerospace giant Lockheed Martin modifies and repairs military and civilian aircraft in Greenville County. Suppliers throughout the state continually expand, such as GKN Aerospace in Orangeburg County and Safran in Ladson, both of which make parts for Boeing jets.

The new aerospace curriculum introduces students to the diversity of aerospace careers, such as CNC machinist, engineer, aviation mechanic, airframe assembler and astronaut.

The courses are for students who want to learn how airplanes and spacecraft are designed, built and flown. Students need a strong math background; algebra is often a prerequisite.

Stall Principal Jeremy Carrick said the curriculum can help students decide whether to pursue a career in aerospace.

Collector’s Items

Found text — from book spines, scrap paper, and more — turns up in pieces like “Pushing Open All the Windows,”

Abbie Read has a passion for found objects — and books and paper and paintings. This month, she’s bringing together her eclectic interests in a years-in-the-making installation in Brunswick.

Every morning when Appleton artist Abbie Read walks into her studio, eager to finish some work she left in progress the night before, she’s surrounded by her collection of found objects she’s amassed over the years: a basket of brightly painted bocce balls (made, unusually, of clay); antique tools, the uses of which are hard to discern; an old model airplane suspended by a window; a couple of weathered bird feeders; a turtle shell; an old-time sailor statuette; a wagon wheel; skulls of cattle and other animals. A visitor could spend hours inspecting the items, eyeing the craftsmanship and feeling the weight, like an archaeologist investigating the artifacts of an ancient and strange civilization, wondering, “What the heck is that?”

“The collections feed my art and feed me,” Read says, glancing around at the hundreds of items, with thousands of years of history among them. “And that’s a big part of who I am as an artist.”

Like many of her pieces, Abbie Read’s “Obelisk” is made from stitched-together book covers.

Read’s latest exhibition, Library, consists of a single, prodigious work of the same name, a 280-square-foot wall installation up this month at Brunswick’s

Annual Float-Fly set for Saturday

Radio-controlled planes and boats will be in the air and on the water this Saturday for the Hardin County Radio-Control Modelers’ annual Float-Fly.

The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday near the bandstand at Freeman Lake Park. Those who want to fly at the event do not have to be Hardin County Radio-Control Modelers members, but they must be Academy of Model Aeronautics members.

So far, club secretary Mike Blair said 10 to 15 participants have signed up, with the majority of those club members.

Hardin County Radio-Control Modelers was founded in 2001 and became an AMA-chartered club. Blair said it currently has 35 members ranging in age from 11 to 70 and from all walks of life and careers “who all share a great passion for radio-control flying.”

“The level of modeling experience across the membership is quite impressive,” he said.

The type of aircraft models members fly range from scratch-built $1 foam-board, small-electric models to large-scale electric and gas models.

“We fly airplanes, helicopters, sailplanes, flying-wings, multi-rotor, of which are now known to everyone as drones, and float-flying models,” Blair said. “A few types of flying we do are sport, aerobatic, 3-D and first- person view. And many of us also make our own airplanes.”

Blair said only float-flying models will be used at Saturday’s event.

Members are encouraging spectators to attend Saturday to watch the show and learn about the club and radio-control craft, Blair said.

“We’d love for people to come over and interact,” he said.
