R/C Warbirds set to take to the air Sept. 16

DUNNELLON – Tom Gorth plans to put his scale model radio controlled T-28 Navy airplane through some pretty slick maneuvers at the 17th annual Gen. Chuck Yeager Warbird Fly-In set for Sept. 16.

The Tri-County R/C Club will host the event at the Rainbow R/C Field on Bridges Road just east of Dunnellon on County Road 484, where club members fly almost daily.

Geo Derewenko said the club has a letter obtained 17 years ago, signed by Yeager, which allows the group to use his name for the fly-in. Yeager is a noted test pilot, WWII ace and the first pilot to have exceeded the speed of sound.

Gorth explained that most aerobatics during the event will be “scale,” or true to the performance of the actual aircraft and the physical limitations of the pilot. All types of radio controlled planes, from a World War I Fokker to a realistic sounding DeHavilland 112 Venom jet, are expected.

Wingspan on the airplanes can exceed five feet and the engines are electric, glow plug or spark plug-type gasolines.

“We will fly in patterns and do rolls, cork screws and loops,” said Gorth, treasurer of the club.

Gorth, 72, a native of Scotland, is the son of an American GI and his mother was in the British Army. He came to American on the Queen Mary in 1946 and became a naturalized citizen when he joined the U.S. Navy in 1965, where he served until 1969. The  Vietnam War veteran

United Technologies Buys Rockwell Collins For $30B

ANDREW MORAN

United Technologies, a multinational industrial conglomerate, has agreed to buy Rockwell Collins, an aerospace manufacturer, for $30 billion. This is being touted as the largest aerospace deal in history – United already holds what will now be the second-biggest acquisition, which occurred in 2012 when the company purchased Goodrich, an airplane parts maker, for $16.5 billion.

What Does This Mean to Clients and Investors?

United will pay $140 a share in cash and stock: Rockwell shareholders will receive $93.33 per share in cash and another $46.67 in United stock. This represents an 18% premium from when the deal was first reported last month and 30% more than where the stock settled in July.

The move will come with approximately $500 million in cost savings over four years, but United will take over Rockwell’s $7 billion debt. These savings will stem from eradicating the costs of being a publicly-traded company for Rockwell and duplicative sales expenses.

Greg Hayes, United CEO, will stay on as chief executive of the merged company. Kelly Ortberg, Rockwell CEO, will be head of a new enterprise called Collins Aerospace. In a press release, Ortberg said that it all comes down to competition:

We are extremely pleased to announce this compelling transaction with UTC which is a testament to the value we have created for Rockwell Collins’ employees, customers and shareowners. The combination will enable us to compete more effectively for future business through continued investments in innovation, world-class integrated product offerings and the ability to retain the

Model T Fords ride into town | Pincher Creek Echo

PINCHER CREEK –

A handful of turn-of-the-century vehicles made a pit stop in Pincher Creek on Aug. 1 as part of the Foothills Model T Ford Club’s 2017 summer tour.

Pincher Creek was just one of many stops, including Cardston, Waterton and Cowley, as the club drove their 100-year old vehicles down the scenic highways of southern Alberta.

Collecting and refurbishing these historic vehicles is a passion for the club members, and for Robb Wolff, it is a family affair.

“My dad started restoring old cars and I guess I just inherited that gene,” Wolff said.

Wolff’s Model T is a stripped down racer — with no windshield or roof — which he recreated and restored from the ground up.

Wolff said this sort of racing machine has a history in Alberta. In the 1940s, the Lions Clubs of Edmonton and Calgary hosted races to raise funds for orphans in Europe during the Second World War.

The first race took place in Calgary’s Victoria Park on Labour Day of 1941, providing thrills for the 12,000 spectators.

Wolff said the recreation and maintenance of these vehicles are easier than some might think.

“Most people would think you can’t get parts, but really you can,” he said. “A lot of the parts they actually make new, the ones that wear out a lot.”

Wolff said the Model T is special

China needs 7240 new planes in next 20 years: Boeing forecast

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) — China is expected to need 7,240 new planes over the next 20 years, valued at nearly 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars, said Boeing in its latest market outlook, released Wednesday in Beijing.

China’s fleet size is expected to grow at a pace faster than the world average. Almost 20 percent of global new airplane demand will be from airlines based in the country, said Boeing in its annual China Current Market Outlook (CMO).

Boeing has projected a global demand of 41,030 new commercial airplanes over the next 20 years, valued at 6.1 trillion U.S. dollars.

“China’s continuous economic growth, significant investment in infrastructure, growing middle class and evolving airline business models support this long-term outlook,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Boeing adjusted China’s expected airplane demand higher by 6.3 percent compared with last year’s forecast.

It predicted that China will need 5,420 new single-aisle airplanes through 2036.

According to the CMO, full-service airlines and low-cost carriers have been adding new single-aisle airplanes and expanding new point-to-point services to cater to both leisure and business travel demand in China and throughout Asia.

“China’s outbound travel market continues its rapid growth toward 200 million passengers annually,” said Tinseth.

More than 50 percent of all the commercial jetliners operating in China are Boeing airplanes, according to Boeing.

According to the company, China has a component role for every current Boeing commercial airplane model. Over 9,000 Boeing airplanes fly around the world with integrated China-built parts and components.

Flying a plane — without ever leaving the ground

SPEARFISH — A safety check is a must, no matter the size of an airplane, and Friday, Terry Batterman, president, and Tom Sandvick, safety coordinator, of the Northern Hills RC (radio-controlled) Flyers club, highlighted the importance of this mantra at Memorial Field two miles north of Spearfish.

With two runways, storage, and mini hangars on space leased from the city at the Spearfish Wastewater Treatment Plant, the club has been flying at the site since the 1990s and has about a dozen members currently.

“To me, it’s a rush to fly,” Batterman said. He has always been interested in radio-controlled airplanes and joined the club in 2003, when the site only had one runway, no buildings, etc. Since that time, the area has been seeded, with sprinklers added, and club members maintain the area through mowing, etc.

Sandvick got into the hobby in 1962, and he remembers building free-flight airplanes. He started to get into radio, but after getting married, raising children, and working, he fell out of flying until about three years ago, when he retired and his wife encouraged him to take up more hobbies.

Batterman said the main thing for people new to the activity should know is to not be scared.

“Probably 99 percent of it – they’re all rebuildable,” Sandvick said of the radio-controlled aircraft. He joked that while one of his airplanes, an Apprentice, is supposedly crash-proof, “I’m on my third one!” he laughed.

The members said that there is rarely a day when they don’t have something to do

Joe’s Weather Irma: Irma now a Category 5 (for now) + record lows? (TUE-9/5)

Good morning. Over the weekend I was banging the weather drum about all the smoke in the air from fires burning in the western part of the country…yesterday it seemed folks were surprised that it was in the air. I get that…not many meteorologists were talking about the situation over the weekend at least…plus with it being a holiday a lot were doing other things…but IF you follow me on twitter I probably had about a dozen references to the smokey conditions. In all my years here I don’t remember seeing as much persistent smoke out there as I have over the last few days…it actually goes back to last Friday.

Forecast:

Today: The smoke should fade a bit more today, as cooler air now takes over the region. Temperatures will be cool for September with highs in the low-mid 70s

Tonight: Fair skies and very cool with lows down into the low-mid 40s. The record is 43°. I don’t think we get that low…but we may get close, and some of the outlying areas may dip to near 40° north of the KC metro area.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny and cool again with highs approaching 70°

Thursday: Sunny and cool with highs near 75°

Discussion:

Let’s start with the smoke…getting smoke wafting through our skies in the KC region isn’t that unusual really. It’s more or less tied to the amount of smoke being created from the seriousness of wild/forest fires in the western parts of the US and up into Canada. We’ve
