Following his heart led Romine to Web Industries – Plastics News

When Donald Romine took a summer job right out of college in 1973 at Web Industries Inc., he was thinking with his heart.

So was his new boss, Robert Fulton, the founder of the flexible material converter and contract manufacturing business.

Based in Marlborough, Mass., the company wasn’t too far from a New England woman that a smitten Romine had met at a summer camp in Pennsylvania.

Fulton was at the camp, too, and knew about the budding romance. He offered the 21-year-old with a degree in oceanic technology some work so he could at least see his bride-to-be on weekends.

Romine figured he would stay a year or so to earn some money, get some career direction and then continue his education.

“My parents and

Hurricane Irma makes landfall in lower Florida Keys

Hurricane Irma began its assault on Florida early Sunday and made landfall on Cudjoe Key in lower Florida Keys with top sustained winds of 130 mph.

As a powerful Category 4 storm, Irma lashed the area. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it was expected to remain a powerful storm as it moved through the Florida Keys and near the state’s west coast.

Irma regained strength as its eyewall reached the lower Florida Keys early Sunday and forecasters monitored a crucial shift in its trajectory — just a few more miles to the west — that could keep its ferocious eye off the southwest Florida coast and over warm Gulf water.

The eyewall is a band of clouds surrounding the center of the storm that has intense winds and strong rain.

Life Story: R. Blaine Olson, 94, of De Soto

Blaine Olson’s son, Gary, said his father was not in the spotlight, but he had a large and lasting impact on his town.

“You’re not going to find a big plaque with his name,” Gary said. “But you will find how many lives Dad quietly touched over the years. He was always interested in making De Soto a better place for families to live.”

Blaine Olson died Aug. 29 at age 94. He was a longtime community volunteer and an amateur genealogist.

Mr. Olson grew up in Hematite, working on the family chicken farm.

“They shipped eggs to some of the big hotels in St. Louis, and sold seed corn to local farmers,” said Gary, 66, who worked on the farm himself in his youth. “At its height, they had one chicken house that could hold 10,000 chicks.”

Mr. Olson graduated from De Soto High School at just over 5 feet tall; at Anderson College in Indiana he rapidly grew past 6 feet.

“He was working and going to school, and he grew so fast, he developed a heart issue,” Gary said. “He would suffer a real rapid heartbeat.”

Doctors later in life would tell Mr. Olson his condition was not serious.

“They said it was a nuisance ailment and it’s never going to kill you,” Gary said.

But his parents brought him home from college, and he spent a few months recovering.

“He gradually got better,” Gary said. “While he was recovering, my grandmother taught him to sew and do applique.”

He received a draft notice after World War II

Fly to buy: A trip can save you thousands on a used car

DETROIT (AP) — If you’re willing to fly, you can save when you buy.

Perhaps thousands of dollars on a used SUV, car or truck.

Used vehicle prices vary wildly between U.S. metro areas, sometimes over $3,000. So with some careful research and a plane ticket, it might be worth the time it takes to travel.

“For the adventurous deal-seeker looking to save some money, it’s a viable option,” says Lisa Rosenberg, a data analyst with Cargurus.com, an online sales site. “The savings can be pretty extreme.”

Flying to buy is not for everyone. There’s a big risk in buying a car sight-unseen, and not everyone wants to trust a used car salesman who’s 1,000 miles away.

Rosenberg, who has analyzed used car variances between metro areas, says Miami generally has the lowest prices in the country, followed by Cleveland; Stamford, Connecticut; Tampa, Florida; New York City; Orlando, Florida; Sarasota, Florida; Pittsburgh and Toledo, Ohio. Miami’s prices run roughly 10 percent below the national average.

For instance, the average 2014 BMW 3-Series car would cost about $22,000 in Fresno, California, which ranks second among the most expensive metro areas. The same car is $18,995 in Miami, just over $3,000 cheaper. A 2014 Dodge Charger goes for $19,605 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the nation’s most expensive metro area, but it’s about $3,000 less in Miami.

Miami is a huge market for leased vehicles, and they come back to dealers after two or three years. Often dealers will buy and resell them as used.

One of a kind find

XENIA — Xenia resident Glenn Gersch’s 1928 Hispano-Suiza will be spotlighted during Carillon Park’s 11th Annual Dayton Concours d’Elegance Sept. 17.

This relic is the only operable model in the United States.

“To restore it, we had to search all around the world for pieces,” said Gersch, a neurospace engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. “We had to measure some pieces to have them fabricated. Sometimes, we would have to wait a year for a needed part. I love historical technology, so I really enjoyed this project.”

This extremely rare car was bought by Gersch and co-owner Dan Geuder in Aurora, Ind. Together, they worked to research the vehicle’s history, model information and searched for replacement parts to build the core back to its original glory.

“One of the things that was really unique with this car at the time, was that it had power brakes,” Gersch said. “But, they are not the kind of power breaks that we have today. They had drum brakes and they have a drum brake that goes on the side of the transmission so if the car is moving the whole drum is rotating and gives additional power to the brakes. It’s something that Rolls Royce paid Hispano-Suiza up through the 1960s for using it on their cars.”

In the early 1900s, Swedish engineer Marc Birkigt designed a vehicle but couldn’t find funding. Soon after he was hired by Spaniard Emilo de la Cuadra, owner of LaCuadra who began producing vehicles in 1898. After hiring Birkigt, Hispano-Suiza automobiles were

Giant Scale Fly-In set for Saturday

Looking for something fun to do Saturday? Look up.

The Smoky Hill Model Flying Club will host its annual Giant Scale Fly-in starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through late afternoon at the club’s flying site, three-fourths of a mile east of Ohio Street on Schilling Road.

Spectators of all ages are welcome at no charge. It’s not a bad idea to bring your own chairs, although bleacher seating is available. You also might consider packing a lunch, or at least some bottles of water, as no concessions will be available onsite.

The fly-in will showcase radio-controlled aircraft pilots from novice to expert, with airplanes sporting both electric and fuel-powered motors. Between 25 and 30 radio-control pilots normally attend from Kansas and surrounding states, bringing with them 30 to 40 planes, said club president Kevin Schafer, of Salina.

It’s not a contest — just an opportunity for area modelers to enjoy a day of flying together and talking about their planes.

“There’s nothing unusual this year — it’s basically a bunch of pilots getting together to fly planes,” Schafer said.

He said the planes will range in size from wingspans of 80 inches to almost 20 feet. Schafer said in addition to pilots from Kansas and other states in the region, there might be a Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus student flying a drone on autopilot.

He said spectators are encouraged to talk to the pilots.

“Most of them are more than happy to show off their planes and talk about them,” he said.

He said some members
