BULLHEAD CITY — Bullhead City resident Gary Terrell is looking for people interested in land sailing — a sport in which a lightweight vehicle with wheels and a sail is pushed by wind.

It’s similar to driving a go-cart or sailing a small boat — or combining the two.

It not only has steering to turn but also has a sail control that can be adjusted to slow down or speed up.

“It’s a lot of fun and it doesn’t take long to learn,” said Terrell, a retired Mohave High School teacher who started land surfing about three years ago. 

He used to windsurf but got tired of a hobby that left him cold and wet. Land sailing, called land or sand yachting more often in the past, turned out to be a warmer and drier alternative. 

The first land sailing day at Rotary Park is scheduled on Oct. 8, with a start time of 3 p.m. near the park area where people fly model airplanes. The start time is based on normal outdoor conditions here during the early fall. For example, the wind is better in the afternoons than the mornings, Terrell explained.

“We’re hoping people will show up with their carts,” he said. “We want to entice them to come out.”

Weather conditions should be right for land sailing within the next couple of weeks.

“It’s been too hot so far,” Terrell said. “It’s too uncomfortable in the summer to sail here, but the weather should be right for it soon.”

The Viet Nam War was raging and the U.S. military was testing airplanes that could pack a big punch in close quarters warfare. After testing several aircraft as in-flight cannon platforms officials experimented with a C-130. That’s where young USAF electronics technician, Mark Banus, came into the picture.

“There was a shortage of C-130’s, so they got an original AC-130A from a museum, outfitted it with eight guns and took it to Viet Nam for testing.” Known as the Spectre Gunship, it was like a fire-breathing dragon.

Mark’s main job was to maintain the avionics and side-looking infrared radar (SLR) equipment.

“I was also a part-time brass shoveler,” he laughs. “At 6,000 rounds a minute from each gun there were a lot of shell casings that we didn’t want to fall into enemy hands.”

The final evaluation showed that Spectre had three times the combat effectiveness of previous test aircraft.

Along the way Mark met and married Meg, his wife of 51 years.

“I was stationed in Biloxi and I was the only one among my friends who had a car – a ’57 Ford hard-top convertible.”

His friends had been invited to a student nurses’ pool party in Gulfport and asked Mark to drive them.

“You want me to drive you to a party, drop you off and leave? I think not!”

Even though Jeremy Pontious brought his 1985 Buick Riviera to sell at the “Wings and Wheels” event Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant Municipal Airport, he obtained a unique experience, too.

“It’s people looking for things from the past that are neat,” said Pontious, from Coleman.

Pontious flies model airplanes across the field at the airport and is a member of the Mt. Pleasant Model Aircraft Club so the event – hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 907 – was an experience for him.

It featured approximately 25 planes and 130 classic cars, according to Butch Ballauer, treasurer of the EAA Chapter 907.

“I think planes and car people are very similar,” Ballauer said. “They like to show off their equipment to other people.”

He said planes came from cities such as Detroit, Harrison and Clare, and the cars came from places such as Greenville, Grand Rapids and Everett.

The planes showcased were antiques, homebuilt, and production models, and classic and custom cars.
