Wet weather doesn’t dampen spirits at Runway Fest

Runway Fest, co-hosted by the Portage County Regional Airport and the Northeast Ohio Two Cylinder Club, recently was held at the airport.

The event featured aircraft, classic cars, antique tractors, motorcycles and military vehicles, along with biplane rides, free airplane rides under the Young Eagles program for kids ages 8 to 17, breakfast and lunch sponsored by the Crestwood Lions Club, food trucks, and a tribute to Bill Bower, a Ravenna native and Doolittle Raider.

“The car show is expected to grow. Last year, we had a good amount, but we’re hoping that more people turn out,” said Chris Mars, the event coordinator for the airport. “This year we added awards in the form of ribbons, which were given to the first 50 vehicles, as well as trophies for people’s choice voting, best ground vehicle, best aircraft and best of show.”

New this year was the Ravenna Thunderbirds, an amateur radio-controlled flyer group, featuring model airplanes with more than 80-inch wingspans.

The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1591 sponsored the Young Eagle flights, with local pilots offering to take kids to the skies.

Runway Fest, formerly known as Wings and Wheels, was organized by Celebrate Portage to inform the citizens of Portage County about what services are available at the airport. The organization’s mission is “to educate and invigorate the vision for a vibrant and exciting Portage County.”

USC engineers test planes for NASA that could reduce fuel consumption

In 2008, NASA asked researchers to develop new aircraft designs that meet ambitious energy and environmental goals.

USC’s Alejandra Uranga led one such team in the development and testing of a new commercial aircraft that can reduce fuel consumption, and in turn emissions, by as much as 66 percent within the next two decades.

The demand for air transportation is going up by roughly 5 percent each year.

Alejandra Uranga

“The demand for air transportation is going up by roughly 5 percent each year,” said Uranga, who joined the project as the technology lead in 2010 when she was a research engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before coming to USC in 2016. “Air transportation only accounts for about 2 percent of the global emissions, but its share is growing and everything else is polluting less and less. Therefore, there is more and more pressure for aviation to become environmentally friendly.”

Uranga and her team modified the existing design of a 737-type aircraft by integrating the structure of the airplane and the propulsion system — relocating the engines from under the wings to on top of the rear of the fuselage. Instead of pushing the air out of the way, similar to how a boat creates a wake, this design, named the D8, pulls the surrounding air into the engines and uses it to propel the plane forward with significantly higher efficiency than with conventional engine placement. This method, known as boundary layer ingestion, is known to reduce vehicle fuel burn

What happens to old planes? Southwest Airlines is retiring 30 of its fleet’s ‘Classics’

They will be left intact, unlike some aircraft that get broken down for spare parts, including engines, upon retirement. Southwest hopes the aircraft won’t be parked in the desert for long, and is actively marketing the jets for sale.

“It’s going to be in a state where we could sell it to someone and they could turn around and fly it,” said Jon Stephens, the airline’s director of fleet transactions. “Our thinking is it’s a short-term storage program … our intent to find buyers and homes for these aircraft.”

Southwest has already sold a few of its 737-300s, although it hasn’t disclosed the buyers.

U.S. airlines often look to sell their retiring aircraft in other countries to avoid giving a domestic rival more capacity to grow, but that’s not always the case.

Southwest flipped 88 Boeing 717s acquired through its purchase of AirTran Airways to Delta Air Lines in a 2012 subleasing agreement.

The South American market would be one likely destination for the retiring jets, said industry analyst Henry Harteveldt, for “either a low-cost airline or a startup that’s looking for a reliable but low-cost aircraft.” Other options could be found in Asia, or in non-passenger service operations, like freight.

“There’s almost always someone who’s out there to buy it,” Harteveldt said. “A big factor is how many airplanes there are, what price and what condition.”

3 Theories About Jack’s Death On ‘This Is Us’ To Get You Ready For Season 2

NBC’s This Is Us is a fascinating blend of old school family drama, the kind with a big heart, and a bigger tissue box, and new school wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey puzzle box mystery. There’s nothing more satisfying after having a cathartic cry than it sit down and try and figure out whodunit, or in the case of This Is Us “when and what dunit?” As the story of the Pearson family has been on summer hiatus, fans have spawned dozens of This Is Us Jack death theories, from the serious to the very silly.

With the show about to return for Season 2, we’ve looked at all the crazy internet theories and boiled them down to the Top Three most plausible scenarios. That means that some of the more outlandish or gruesome theories, like “Kate kills him” or “Miguel kills him” are right out. Yes, Rebecca does end up marrying Jack’s best friend Miguel, but this isn’t that kind of party.

This also means the more left field type theories like “he dies saving people from a house fire” and “he died in 9-11” are also out. This Is Us trades in realism, and though both these theories are really popular, they’re also a bit too melodramatic, and heavy handed. (The 9/11 theory is also out because we’re pretty sure Jack died before 2000, when the Big Three were still teenagers.)

So what are the most plausible answers?

He Dies From Terminal Illness

Groups help make Heritage Park a better place

RAISIN TWP. — The city of Adrian takes a lot of pride in Heritage Park.

It is not alone. So do the different clubs that use it on a weekly basis.

The evidence is in the work and time they put into it to make it a welcoming, fun place to visit.

“I think without the clubs, Heritage Park would not be the Heritage Park that we know and love,” Todd Brown, Adrian’s parks and engineering services director, said.

Brown said there are a variety of groups and individuals that play a role at the park, but he said the disc golf, flying and mountain bike clubs have done a lot for the park and deserve some recognition.

“The city has a great relationship with these clubs and it means a lot to us, what they’ve do at the park and continue to do,” Brown said.

Todd Blumerick, 46, of Adrian said the mountain bike club, which is a volunteer group and part of the Potawatomi Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Bike Association, initially used Heritage Park for “selfish” reasons. Brown said the group basically created and built the mountain bike trails in the park.

“What started as a selfish endeavor — we just wanted greats trails close to home — has turned out to be a big draw to the community as we’ve seen riders routinely coming from Toledo and other areas to ride our trails,” Blumerick said. “We are very proud
