EAST NORRITON Painted stemware, acrylic and watercolor paintings, jewelry, knitwear, crocheted items, fleece blankets, pottery, sculptures, poetry, German paper cuttings known as Scherenschnitte, pen and pencil sketches, models, and stained glass art lined the tables in Brightview East Norriton’s William Penn Room recently.

A lively buzz – excited conversation peppered with laughter – filled the room as residents, associates, family, and friends mingled during the community’s seventh annual Resident Art Show.

“The art on display was handmade by residents and associates,” Vibrant Living Director Elena Wilson said. “Proving it is never too early to get involved, contributions have also come from some of our future residents, those who have placed deposits for apartment homes.

Chinese American astronaut on how his space dream came true and why Asian kids need to project themselves to …

Giants steps I was born in 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My parents were from China but met at university in Taiwan and got married before emigrating to the United States. I have two sisters, one older, one younger.

I was eight years old when I saw the Apollo moon landing in 1969. I was riveted. We watched it all afternoon; it was so amazing to go out, look up and realise that, almost a quarter of a million miles away, two astronauts were getting ready to take their first steps on the moon. I’ve always been interested in space rockets and airplanes, but that’s where the dream started.

All the kids back then wanted to be astronauts, but it stuck with me. I was always building things on a workbench in the garage – cutting wood and making model airplanes and rockets and flying them.

48th anniversary of Apollo 11 mission: a look back at the iconic moments

A degree of difficulty I did well at school and, in 1978, started at the University of California, Berkeley, about 40 miles from where my parents lived in Danville. I got my undergraduate degree in chemical engineering.

I always say getting my bachelor’s was the single hardest thing I’ve done in my life. Once I got to university, I was working harder than I ever had before and, for the first time in my life, I was getting bad grades. It was demoralising.

Boeing, Airbus Look to Land Profits by Making Their Own Aircraft Parts

The world’s largest plane makers are testing a seemingly simple formula to smooth production, cut costs and fatten profits: Make more of the parts that go into their jets themselves.

In the wake of United Technologies Corp.’s proposed $23 billion deal to buyRockwell Collins Inc., that push is taking on more urgency. The deal is the latest in a round of consolidation among the world’s biggest suppliers of aviation parts—something…

How It Works: Yaw Damper

In its most basic form, a yaw damper inhibits movement of an aircraft around its vertical axis, performing like an automated set of feet on the rudder pedals.

A yaw damper pulls aircraft movement information from a series of accelerometers or rate sensors in the rudder and translates it into the proper amount of calming rudder inputs. In a single-engine airplane, the yaw damper smooths out the left-right movements of the vertical stabilizer, often referred to as fishtailing, creating a more comfortable ride for passengers.

The yaw damper on a swept-wing aircraft, especially one with a T-tail, also inhibits the Dutch roll tendency, a wallowing combination of yawing and rolling motions of the wing. When a Dutch roll occurs on an aircraft without a damper, any yawing motion can create corkscrew-like oscillations that continue until they either die out naturally or escalate.

In older straight-wing aircraft, yaw damper functions can be selected on or off by the pilot, while in more recent airplanes, such as the latest model Cirrus SR22, the yaw damper engages automatically once the aircraft climbs above 200 feet agl. The damper system automatically disengages when the airplane descends below 200 feet agl on approach to landing.

Cirrus yaw damper servos in the tail of the aircraft are in constant communication with most of the avionics on board, including the air-data attitude heading reference system. The ADAHRS is, in fact, constantly monitoring every pitch, roll and yaw movement, and the Cirrus provides envelope protection whether the autopilot is engaged or not.

A man who’s participated in 41 space missions remembers the Sputnik launch

But without a doubt, he says, his favorite mission was the one that launched the Voyager space probes 40 years ago, 20 years after Sputnik 1 beeped its way across the twilit sky in Iowa. Voyager finally reached the outer limits of our solar system just four years ago, passing into the edges of interstellar space. It now takes almost 19 hours for the spacecraft’s signal to reach back to Earth, and it’s growing more distant every day.

“Just think of all the things we’ve done. We’ve flown to every planet in the solar system. There are astronomy books full of things about the other planets and the moons around those planets and how different some of them are from Earth,” Gurnett says. “Space research has just been tremendously successful over the intervening 60 years.”

Gurnett doesn’t anticipate joining any new missions—he’s planning to retire in two years—but he’d like to see orbiters sent to Neptune and Uranus, two planets that haven’t been studied in much detail. And he’d like us to make one more great push: he got to see our first escape from Earth’s atmosphere, and he’d like to witness an attempt to leave our solar neighborhood, too.

“Not in my lifetime, not even anybody’s lifetime are we going to get to a nearby star, but we could get to an interstellar medium if we pushed on that,” he says.

He claims he doesn’t have plans to campaign for an interstellar probe himself, but admits with a smile in his

Three Upgrades for Aircraft Interiors That Increase Value

Three brokers weigh in on which improvements for aircraft interiors improvements have the biggest impact on aircraft resale value.

Historically low aircraft resale prices, together with a large volume of used aircraft on the market, have aircraft owners and fleet managers thinking about how to maximize the value of their current aircraft. In order to stand out in a crowded marketplace and secure a higher resale value, or to maximize usability so that they can happily keep the aircraft for a year or two longer rather than upgrading now.

The Private Jet Interior is Central to Passenger Satisfaction and Resale Price

Larry Dean, President of CL Jet, put it this way:

“Business jets typically fly less than 500 hours per year and are generally kept for less than 5 years so they get little use. When the owner approves the decision for a major refurbishment they most likely plan to keep the aircraft for another 4 to 5 years.”

Cabin upgrades may include any of the following:

Softgoods – seat leather, fabric and carpet

Galley – food service equipment

Cabin Management – Satcom for internet and communications, entertainment music and video

Major refurbishment – includes the above plus wood, headliners, and sidewalls

Keeping stakeholders satisfied with the airplane, and keeping charter revenue higher for longer can be a major cost savings. Passenger satisfaction often has more to do with the condition of the interior than with the year the aircraft rolled off the assembly line.

When selling an aircraft, the condition of the interior is also a key factor.

“One of the
