Don’t feel intimidated if you cannot identify all the airplanes at this weekend’s Hatbox Memorial Giant Scale Fly-In.

Event director Gaines Smith said “pilots” can offer plenty of information.

“We understand more about the planes than probably most full-scale pilots do,” Smith

The 2018 Jaguar F-Type SVR: Should You Buy the Convertible or Coupe?

Jaguar’s F-Type has outsold the company’s initial sales expectations and earned critical awards for the look of its elegant, athletic body, its excellent driving performance, and fair pricing for a sports car of its caliber.

“The F-Type has been a revelation for the Jaguar brand,” Stuart Schorr, head of communications at Jaguar, told me. The brand argues that the F-Type is to Jaguar as the “911 is to Porsche, 3 Series is to BMW, and S-Class/SL-Class are to Mercedes-Benz.”

In fact, Jaguar has doubled its sales in the past year, thanks in part to the prominence of the F-Type, which holds roughly 20 percent of the sports car segment against stalwarts such as the 911, the Chevrolet Corvette, and the Audi R8.

“It is easily the most important Jaguar since the E-Type,” Schorr said.

I agree.

The highest-tuned of the model range—the snarling 2018 F-Type SVR—is the ultimate expression of the idea. The real question is which of that version to buy: the coupe or the convertible?

You might like to know that among all F-Types, coupes make up about 65 of those sold, and convertibles 35 percent. This is somewhat consistent with the segment. Further, SVR models make up about 9 percent of all F-Types sold, with SVR coupes taking about 70 percent of those sales.

As for me, I recently drove each for hundreds of miles over the course of two weeks along California’s Golden Coast, and while it’s tempting to choose the freedom that open-top driving seems to afford—especially next to such stunning

Piaggio Spotlights Expanded Support Options

Piaggio is backing its Avanti Evo model with several new customer support initiatives, including some that will benefit operators of older Avantis.

The Italian turboprop manufacturer is offering Evo customers a Forward Wing Care program. The five-year deal covers scheduled and unscheduled airframe and component work, including labor. Work can be done at Piaggio’s Villanova d’Albenga, Italy, facility or any of the company’s 15 authorized service centers, eight of which are in the U.S.

“We are here,” Piaggo America president and CEO Michael Hissam told AIN at NBAA 2017. “Our customer support locations and how we support the fleet are what we want to emphasize. Once people see it, the airplane sells itself.”

Piaggio (Booth C11920) also is beefing up its U.S. spare parts inventory. About half of the 220-strong Piaggio fleet, including the first P.180, operates in the U.S., so positioning more parts there helps shorten lead times.

The company also is setting up an AOG support network with Constant Aviation. Expected to be in place in 2018, the network will complement Piaggio-authorized service centers, which will also have more spares on hand, noted Paolo Ferreri, vice president-customer support for the Americas.

Piaggio hopes the enhanced product-support offerings will jump-start sales of the Evo, its third-generation Avanti. The company delivered three in 2016. North American launch customer West Coast Aviation Services, with five firm orders and four options, is slated to receive its second Evo in December, two more in 2018 and the fifth in 2019.

Lynn Nichols and Yingling Aviation Selected To Receive Eighth Annual Wichita Aero Club Trophy

WICHITA, Kan.—October 11, 2017—The Wichita Aero Club announced today that its eighth annual Wichita Aero Club Trophy will be presented to a Chief Executive Officer who led the re-vival of a virtually dormant business to impressive levels of success—even during an industry-wide recession—and to his team of employees at Yingling Aviation, which currently holds a well-deserved reputation as one of the nation’s leading fixed base operations, maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities and parts suppliers.

“Yingling is definitely a familiar name to Cessna owners all over the world and, of course, in more recent days to Beechcraft and other aircraft operators,” noted Dave Franson, Wichita Aero Club President. “They were actually the first Cessna dealers and celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2016 and they’re still the largest Cessna parts supplier in the world. But all of that history might have been lost if Lynn Nichols hadn’t rescued what had become a floundering enterprise by 1999. He brought his exceptional energy, business acumen, a sense of direction and proven principles that had an obvious, positive impact and have allowed Yingling to grow and develop new opportunities even during a difficult period for general and business aviation.”

The citation which accompanied Mr. Nichols’ and Yingling’s nomination reads:

For providing exceptional services, exemplary business practices, job-generating initia-tives and creative alternatives that advance both the industry and the community, Lynn Nichols and Yingling Aviation have achieved notable success during a difficult business cycle for general and business aviation and are deserving of the Wichita Aero Club Tro-phy.

The nomination

The Glut of Private Jets Means ‘Insane’ Bargains for Buyers …

Corporate-jet makers are flooding the market, spurring deep discounts for new aircraft and fueling a three-year slide in prices of used planes.

Most major manufacturers, including Gulfstream and Bombardier Inc. — which is also contending with rising hurdles in its commercial-jet business — have pared production somewhat in the last couple years as demand for private jets has sagged. But that hasn’t been enough to halt declines in aircraft values, say consultants, brokers and analysts in the $18 billion industry.

Gone is the optimism stoked by the election of President Donald Trump, a corporate-jet maven with his own Boeing 757, along with hopes for speedy tax cuts that would bolster plane purchases. Instead, the news has been full of setbacks. U.S. Health Secretary Tom Price resigned under fire for his frequent use of private planes at taxpayer expense. General Electric Co. is selling off its corporate fleet to cut costs.

“The Trump bump is over,” said Janine Iannarelli, a Houston-based plane broker.

The jet glut is one reason pre-owned prices were down 16 percent in August from a year earlier. With bargains aplenty on machines with few flight hours, manufacturers are cutting deals to entice buyers to purchase new planes. Meanwhile, they keep churning out aircraft and introducing new models.

“It’s a question of who wants to blink first,” said Rolland Vincent, a consultant who puts together
