Help! Children and youngsters are visiting the airfield… | World Air …

Klaus Strienz presents ideas for the development of a children and youth program to use for an “open house” at an airfield or at a large field in the community or near a school.

Situation

It is apparent that children and youth are getting bored very fast when they do not have interesting activities to participate in. A realistic demonstration of this concept took place at the airfield “Friesener Warte“ in the north of Bavaria, Germany in July 2003. The editor is responsible for the school service of the German Aeroclub. The program of activities and learning experiences about many phases of aviation were planned and conducted with good teaching and learning practices in mind.

Strategy

The program is a step by step (1-9) approach to learning different aspects of flying. The first exercises explain the phenomena of air characteristics. Further activities explain the technical characteristics of an airplane. Next we introduce aviation communications (aviation terms).
For good educational reasons the activities are arranged in logical sequence. Each participant is given a paper with each numbered activity. The ideal plan is for each participant to visit the activities in the order shown on the paper. However circumstances of a larger group or availability of mentors may require

Wisconsin suing Kestrel Aircraft over loan debt, stalled financing

The state of Wisconsin is taking legal action against an airplane manufacturer that received $4 million in state loans and millions more in tax incentives in 2012 to build a plant in Superior that was to employ 665 people.

Five years after the loans were made to Kestrel Aircraft, the manufacturing plant hasn’t been built, there are no aircraft manufacturing jobs in Superior, and Kestrel – now part of ONE Aviation, headed by Northland aviation mogul Alan Klapmeier – hasn’t made a loan payment to the state in 11 months and is in default.

In a memo Monday from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. obtained by the News Tribune, state officials told the company they are “moving forward with legal action” because of “Kestrel’s inability to show measurable progress toward obtaining financing.”

“We will pursue any and all remedies available to us to protect the state’s investment,” the memo says.

Meanwhile, one year after being offered $1.5 million in public financial incentives to expand to the Grand Rapids airport, a subsidiary of ONE Aviation still hasn’t accepted the money.

Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board officials confirmed this week that Albuquerque, N.M.-based ACC Manufacturing Inc., which makes composite airplane parts for its parent company, ONE Aviation, hasn’t used the $1.5 million Iron Range loan.

ONE Aviation – formed in 2015 by the merger of Kestrel Aircraft and Eclipse Aerospace – also hasn’t moved any work into a vacant hangar at the airport purchased by the Grand Rapids Economic Development Authority last year with a $293,000 loan

A sense of direction

Warren Blum is living his dream as a dive instructor for Mike Severns Diving and a ride-share driver for Uber and Lyft.

It’s quite evident that Warren Blum has a talent for explaining things. And it’s a skill that certainly comes in handy: As a scuba instructor and ride-share driver, Blum routinely fields questions about marine life, island life — and his life, too.

In fact, Blum says it’s not uncommon for his ride-share passengers to slide into the back seat, catch his eye in the rearview mirror and ask: “So, what’s your story?”

“I really enjoy it,” he said. “I’ve met people from all over the world. I get to hear their stories — and if they ask, I share my story, too. I’ve had so many great conversations.”

There was a time when conversation was, for the most part, a one-way street for Blum.

“I was a dentist for 16 years, so yes, I did most of the talking,” he laughed.

When he’s not underwater or on the road, you might find Warren Blum working on a piece of pottery — a hobby he picked up a few years ago.

Blum’s foray into dentistry began when he was a sophomore at the University of Texas. At the time, he had his sights set on medical school but was vacillating between pre-med majors. One day, he spotted a brochure for the university’s dental school, and on a

LTU students to race cars they’ve designed in annual Grand Prix

Nine colleges and universities will rev up their scaled-down race cars Saturday as Lawrence Technological University hosts its annual Blue Devil Motorsports Grand Prix for Formula SAE teams.

Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International, formerly known as the Society of Automotive Engineers. The competition started in 1978 and was originally called SAE Mini Indy.

The event runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Parking Lot D, along Northwestern Highway, on the Lawrence Tech campus in Southfield. For location and directions, see www.ltu.edu/map.

The event is free and open to the public, and will feature a time-trial competition between the student vehicles.

In Formula SAE, student teams design and build a roughly half-scale Formula-style race car. In competitions each spring, the cars are judged on design, cost, manufacturability, acceleration, handling, fuel economy and endurance.

Formula SAE has since launched spinoffs into other types of vehicles – Baja SAE for off-road vehicles, Formula Hybrid for hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles, aero design for large model airplanes, and super-mileage for ultra-high-mileage cars.

The FAA is on the lookout for exploding airplanes

A midair engine explosion on a flight last month has prompted the Federal Aviation Authority to mandate “visual inspections” of the parts in question. The components, Airbus A380 superjumbo engines, were the subject of an emergency directive released by the agency Thursday.

A Los Angeles-bound Air France Airbus experienced the engine trouble on Sept. 30 and made an immediate landing in a remote part of Canada. None of the passengers onboard were injured, Air France said, but the incident prompted the FAA to intervene.

The condition that caused the plane’s engine, an Engine Alliance GP7200 series turbofan model, to fail midair may be present in other engines, the FAA’s Emergency Airworthiness Directive said. Inspections will take place within two to eight weeks, depending on the usage of the plane.

The type of engine failure experienced on the Air France flight is rare, and airplane engines are designed to contain failures so that when a problem does occur, pieces of machinery do not break off of the plane. Still, the FAA is instructing operators to inspect the fan hub of all GP7200 series engines, as a malfunction could “lead to an uncontained release of the fan hub, damage to the engine, and damage to the airplane,” the FAA explains.

AirFrance is not the only airline that uses this specific engine on their line of A380 Airbuses; other carriers include Emirates, Etihad, Qatar, and Korean Air.

Perhaps avoiding midair explosions warrants more than just a

ACC had pledged to build a manufacturing plant in the empty hangar employing at least 20 people making composite parts for ONE Aviation’s Eclipse jet by now.
