This Is Why Tesla Is Investing In All-Electric Trucks | Architectural …

Tesla has recently been promoting an all-electric, super-heavy-duty Semi, a full-size cab capable of pulling a tractor-trailer. Long-haul trucking seems like a challenging play for battery electric power given the extreme distances that need to be covered and the unforgiving time pressures that preclude long breaks for battery charging. However, local delivery trucks seem ripe for this kind of electric disruption, and that is exactly why a number of new and venerable players are entering this market.

In densely populated urban areas, delivery trucks play a key role in “last mile” services, bringing in and out of town just about everything that is bought, sold, consumed, manufactured, or disposed of. And with the continued diminution in bricks-and-mortar stores and the rise of home delivery of nearly everything this role is growing.

The great majority of the delivery vehicles currently on the roads run on internal combustion or diesel engines. They cause air and noise pollution for urban residents, as well as a correlative health and safety risk for their drivers.

Silent, emission free, smoother riding electric vehicles (EVs) can solve for much of this. The average urban delivery route in the U.S. is just 70 miles, a range that can easily be completed with current technology. Adoption is also being driven by potential urban bans on petroleum engines, due to the aforementioned negative health consequences. And as battery costs decrease, studies show that the per-mile

How to Remember a War Without Glory?

The museum’s contribution to “1917: Total War in Flanders” is an exhibition of photography by Frank Hurley, a captain appointed by the Australian army to document the cratered landscape around Ypres. Hurley was a daredevil — he’d earlier traveled to Antarctica on the ill-fated voyage of Sir Ernest Shackleton — and he risked his life alongside Australian soldiers when they went over the top.

Photographs from the summer and early fall of 1917 include grim-faced soldiers tiptoeing across mud-spanning duckboards or marching past destroyed trees, as well as images of the crumbled Cloth Hall, the very building where they’re now on display. Yet Hurley felt that his photographs didn’t adequately capture the intensity of Passchendaele, and so he started to combine multiple negatives into single images of hellish drama.

A stunning large photograph of men charging out of the trenches is made up from 12 separate images; the planes above the soldiers’ heads were, however, photographed in the Middle East. Such trickery was commonplace in early war photography, and indeed many of the most famous war photographs — Mathew Brady’s images of Civil War casualties, or Robert Capa’s falling soldier of the Spanish Civil War — were posed or otherwise doctored.

Another of Hurley’s photographs shows soldiers in gas masks. World War I was the first time chemical weapons had been used in warfare.

Buckley: Don’t bet on Bill Belichick leaving Patriots when Tom Brady does

Media Type: “Is the goal now for you to retire with Tom Brady still serving as your starting quarterback?”

Bill Belichick: “Yeah, the goal right now is to beat Denver.”

It was the type of semi-serious, off-the-wall question that routinely gets tossed at professional coaches and managers, partly as a way to break up the daily monotony of X’s and O’s but also as a thinly veiled attempt to elicit a funny sound bite to drop into a TV package.

Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona was sometimes pretty good with these questions, as they gave him a chance to talk about such things as life in the minor leagues, or how he was a really, really bad player, even though he was actually a pretty good player until he kept getting hurt.

Doc Rivers, former coach of the Celtics, knew how to play along. During his Boston years he showed a talent for descriptive anecdotes, as when I once inquired about the derivation of “ubuntu,” a Bantu word from South Africa, loosely defined as “I am because we are.”

Rivers explained he learned the word, which became a theme for the 2007-08 Celtics, from a woman while attending a Marquette University board of trustees meeting . . . held at Alumni Memorial Union . . . during a luncheon . . . fifth floor. It was a sunny day, he said.

As for coach Belichick, he’s typically bored, and often boorish, when these questions are posed. Especially on a Wednesday.

Catch him on a

Boeing’s Smith: Company labored over Dreamliner decision, but in the end market demanded rate increase

Boeing Co.’s decision to boost production of its 787 Dreamliner wasn’t quick or easy, but the aerospace giant’s finance chief said Wednesday it ultimately came down to the plane’s growing strength in the global wide-body market.

“It’s a big decision for the company when we make these rate increases,” Greg Smith, Boeing’s executive vice president and CFO, said during the Baird Global Industrial Conference in Chicago.

The rate increase — to 14 planes a month from 12, split between Boeing assembly sites in North Charleston and Everett, Wash. — was announced in September, but the decision was months in the making.

Smith said the process involved examining “the entire supply chain, our own efficiency, what capital we need and when and, ultimately, the marketplace — is the marketplace strong enough to support 14 a month?”

With more than 600 deliveries in fewer than six years of service and close to 700 Dreamliner orders in the production backlog, Smith said Boeing finally had “the confidence to be able to go to 14.”

He said next year’s introduction of the 330-passenger 787-10 — the largest and most fuel-efficient member of the Dreamliner family — into commercial service “will again draw more demand.” The “Dash 10” will be built exclusively in North Charleston because of its size, and Singapore Airlines is scheduled to take the first delivery next spring.

The 787-10 will make its public debut next week at the Dubai Airshow, one of the world’s largest aviation events, with one of the North Charleston-made test planes on display for potential buyers. There
