ANALYSIS: How Ethiopian has come to the fore in Africa

There is no shortage of lofty long-term growth plans in the airline industry. But as it approaches the halfway stage of its ambitious 15-year strategic vision, Ethiopian Airlines can point to its outpacing of rivals on the African continent.

The fortunes of network-carrier rivals EgyptAir, Kenya Airways and South African Airways have in recent years faltered for a variety of reasons, while Africa’s early adopters of the low-cost carrier model have struggled to make headway in its fragmented skies.

But since embarking on the 15-year plan in 2011, Ethiopian Airlines has charted a relatively stable path to establish itself as region’s biggest carrier.

“When we planned [Vision] 2025, we were the fourth-biggest airline in Africa, behind SAA, EgyptAir and Kenya Airways. But now we are number one, by far,” noted chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam during an interview with reporters in London on 8 November.

FlightGlobal schedules data for December 2010, the month prior to the start of Ethiopian’s 15-year plan, shows EgyptAir and SAA as the biggest carriers in Africa by capacity. Ethiopian was vying for third spot, along with Kenya Airways and North African pair Air Algerie and Tunisair.

Figures for December 2017 show Ethiopian as the African carrier with the most capacity by any measure. Over the past seven years, the Star Alliance member has more than doubled capacity. By contrast, EgyptAir and mainline SAA are both smaller, in capacity terms, than at the start of the decade.

Analysts: Boeing’s Dubai Dreamliner deal has Airbus taking it on the chin

From surprising to devastating, analysts and aerospace observers had plenty of words to describe the fallout for Airbus in the wake of Emirates airline’s decision to buy 40 of Boeing Co.’s 787-10 Dreamliners on Sunday’s opening day of the Dubai Airshow.

And as the second day drew to a close, Airbus had taken another hit with a production demand that appeared to kill any hopes for a sale of the French aerospace giant’s A380 super jumbo jet before the event wraps up on Thursday.

“There is no other way to view this order but as a huge victory for Boeing and a repudiation of Airbus’ product strategy …,” analyst Uresh Sheth said of the 787-10 order on his “All Things 787” website.

Sheth said “it appears that Emirates is banking its future on Boeing products” based on its purchase of the North Charleston-made 787-10s and a previous deal to buy 150 777X wide-bodies.

Scott Hamilton, editor of aerospace website Leeham News and Comment, called the Emirates deal “a stinging defeat for Airbus.”

And Dhierin Bechai of AeroAnalysis termed it “a major blow.”

The 40-plane Emirates purchase is worth $15.1 billion at list prices, although airlines typically negotiate discounts. The deal also includes unspecified equipment and options to buy another 60 Dreamliners. Emirates joins the Middle East’s other big carriers, Etihad and Qatar Airways, as those in the region that will have Dreamliners in their fleets.

The Middle East is a potentially lucrative market for Boeing, which released analysis Monday that shows the region will need 3,350

New aviation programs at PHSC help propel students toward dreams

DADE CITY Dustin Snodgrass has a photograph of himself as a child in the pilots seat of a kid-size model airplane. Snodgrass, now 28, recently took a big step toward his goal of flying real aircraft with his first solo flight through a new professional pilot technology associates degree program at Pasco-Hernando State College.

Snodgrass is not new to airplanes, just piloting them. He was in the Navy for 5 1/2 years as an aviation electronics technician. He spent three years of that time in Japan, staying an extra year in a Tokyo school studying international business, but, he admitted, mainly learning Japanese. He is fluent.

After that, he spent some time in Hawaii for more study, then came to Spring Hill to be closer to family. He said he was looking through the colleges website and saw the aviation offering.

“I already have a few associate degrees,” he said, but decided to add this one.

“I always wanted to be a pilot,” he said.

Snodgrass was the first beginning flyer in the colleges program to solo.

“It was exhilarating,” he said.

Two more students, Keenan Pendergraft, 26, and James Kessner, 24, have also felt what it is like to be sky high and solely in control.

“It was amazing,” Pendergraft said. “You kind of think to yourself, holy —-, Im flying a plane myself!”

“Its
