Analysis: Opportunities, challenges for composites in future aircraft

Accompanying this issue of CompositesWorld is a supplement developed with CW’s sister publications Additive Manufacturing and Modern Machine Shop, titled “Next-Gen Aerospace: Advanced Materials and Processes.” In it you will find reports on a variety of materials and processes targeted toward the coming wave of commercial aircraft programs expected to be announced by Boeing, Airbus and others. Topics include resin infusion of wing structures, resin transfer molding of door surrounds, advances in thermoplastic composites and more. During our research and reporting of these stories, CW editors developed some insights about how the commercial aerospace end market is evolving, and some sense of what the future might bring. Herewith is our take on what we learned.

Boeing vs. Airbus: Imminent decisions on the next high-volume aircraft

Jeff Sloan, editor-in-chief

The next 24 months are likely to be pivotal for the commercial aerospace industry. There is a chess match afoot between Boeing and Airbus, with each carefully eyeing the other, the marketplace, its balance sheets and its supply chains. The first aircraft on the horizon almost certainly will be the long-awaited Boeing NMA (New Midsize Airplane, or 797), a twin-aisle, 200-270-seat, 4,000-5,000-nautical miles plane that would fit between the 737 MAX 10 and the 787-8 in the company’s lineup.

‘The Aircraft Lives On:’ How 747s Are Finding New Life in the Arizona Desert

The stretch of Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson is filled with its fair share of oddities. Just about halfway between Arizona’s two largest cities lies a ranch where visitors can stop by to feed ostriches and stingrays — in the same visit — smack-dab in the middle of the desert. A bit further down the interstate, it isn’t uncommon to see a large group of practicing paratroopers.

But, as your eyes gaze to look for anything but highway, you may notice a substantial amount of airliners parked just outside of Tucson — once again, right in the middle of a scorching desert.

What you’re seeing isn’t Arizona’s newest international airport or a desert mirage, it’s Pinal Airpark. Located in Marana, Ariz., this small, single-runway airfield houses retired aircraft from around the world.

It’s known as an aircraft boneyard. Though this is believed to be “where airplanes go to die,” as one blog wrote in a headline, it’s actually where the parts that make up the plane will get a second life. While true that a jet will be scrapped, stored, crushed, etc. at one of these facilities, the respective parts that allowed it to fly will live on and serve a key long-term purpose in the maintenance longevity of still-airworthy aircraft.

The Boeing 737 Max killed over 300 people—yet airline execs still want it in the air

In many industries, a product that kills 346 people in five months would be recalled and sworn off forever. But in aviation, where that product—the Boeing 737 MAX—is considered essential, execs are trying to save it.

Despite aviation authorities around the world grounding the planes, and fears from passengers about the safety of the aircraft, airline executives are as excited as ever to get the planes back in the sky—pending new safety certifications, of course.

As shown in these public statements by airline executives, Boeing’s 737 MAX is just too good to pass up. It flies farther while burning less fuel and carrying more passengers. What more could a unit-economics obsessed industry want?

Southwest Airlines Just Got Some Truly Great News. (There’s Just 1 Little Catch)

With the past year, the airline weathered intense scrutiny after a passenger, Jennifer Riordan, was partially sucked out of the window of a Southwest 737 airplane and killed. And just as the airline was regaining confidence, the Boeing 737 Max crisis came to the forefront.
