Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Automotive Legend That Is Land Rover

(Photo: Range Rover)

As with anything in life, context is everything. To understand the genesis of Land Rover, one first must survey the smoldering landscape of its birthplace in Great Britain. It was 1947, just a few years removed from the devastation of WWII. The nation lay in rubble, infrastructure destroyed, factories barely powering back up under heavy limitations on materials, energy, and capital.

To the average worker in Southern California, want to double your salary? Consider aerospace – The Pasadena Star

Southern California’s aerospace industry has experienced robust job growth in recent years and the region is well positioned for that growth to continue, according to an analysis released Monday.

Data compiled by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. show direct payroll employment in the Southland’s aerospace industry increased from 85,500 jobs in 2014 to 90,100 jobs in 2016. The overall aerospace industry, including suppliers, vendors and others who contribute to the sector, supported a total of 268,100 Southern California jobs last year, an increase of 22,330 from 2014, and employment among businesses that produce space vehicles, parts and guided missiles has risen 62 percent since 2004, the report said.

The analysis further notes that wages among aerospace workers average $106,200, nearly double the region’s overall average of $56,600. Wages among workers that produce space vehicles, parts and guided missiles have risen 24 percent since 2004, while those working in instrumentation have seen their pay increase by 7 percent.

Southern California has a “deep ecosystem” of highly-skilled talent, the report said, including thousands of suppliers, specialized service providers and a legacy of engineering and RD prowess — factors that are further bolstered by the region’s culture of innovation, risk-taking and entrepreneurship.

High profile innovation

Southern California’s aerospace industry is known for Mars landings, the Space Shuttle, the B-2 Stealth Bomber, development of GPS systems and its visionary entrepreneurs ranging from Howard Hughes to Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX and CEO and product architect of Tesla Inc.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX has been at the forefront of the innovation boom. In October, the

Windows on ARM and the future of PCs as a Service

This month, the initial battle will begin on what will be an historic war for the next generation of PCs.  Initially it will be fought on laptops but – much like smartphones drifted to tablets, and much of the initial wave of AI-driven, home-based digital assistants – this war may eventually encompass all PCs.

If this were just a war between processors, the X86 folks would likely win easily, both because Windows has decades of tuning on X86 and it is the entrenched part. But this isn’t about processors. This is about whether the computing will be done on the desktop or in the cloud.

In short this is a war between the modem and the processor…or yet another attempt to turn the PC into more of large smartphone.

This has a lot of implications both for the future of Windows and the future of both PCs and smartphones. Let’s look at some of the interesting moving parts.

New North Carolina laws take effect

RALEIGH — Age-old criminal misconduct and challenges from new technology are addressed in that 20 North Carolina laws that take effect partially or in full Friday.

The General Assembly passed legislation this year agreeing to expand rules or crimes addressing drones, “revenge porn” and self-driving cars, in addition to pushing through new or tougher penalties for human trafficking or deadly domestic violence. Other new legal offenses or procedures were initiated.

FIGHTING GANGS

Police and prosecutors said a 2008 law addressing gang activity and violence was difficult to use in prosecuting gang members. So lawmakers replaced separate felony counts for criminal gang leaders or members with increased penalties for underlying crimes if jurors decide the offense was committed as part of gang activity. New language also is designed to make it easier to declare a business a public nuisance because gang activity occurs there and shut it down.

BRITNY’S LAW

The shooting death of a Wake County woman by her boyfriend — the father of her child — prompted lawmakers to increase the likelihood that similar domestic violence attackers could face the most severe category of murder for their crimes. “Britny’s Law,” named after the slain woman, creates the legal presumption that a homicide constitutes first-degree murder if the slaying was committed with malice and the defendant had previously been convicted of domestic violence against or stalking of the victim. The defendant can attempt to override that presumption in court. First-degree murder is punishable by death

New Highlands model at Miromar is understated elegance in golfer’s paradise – The News

Nestled along a lake and the 18th hole of the Miromar Lakes Beach Golf Club golf course is a new enclave of 12 planned homes in a gated section of the community. Randall Mitchell Custom Homes is building the villas in the Villa d’ Este neighborhood, and are all walking distance to the clubhouse and golf course. The company has already sold its first home and is now touting its latest model called the Highlands.

The two-story model painted in a Sherwin Williams “Silvermist” looks like a light modern version of a Mediterranean house with a bell tower type of structure out front and a second-story balcony hidden behind that tower.

“This really blended the transitional with Andalusian,” says Mitch Melheim, president of Randall Mitchell Custom Homes. “It is Old World European style, but not heavily Mediterranean. This will stand out and age well.”

Chrissie Porter Forbes, president of Accessories Etc. Design Group, says she had
