Russia Offers New Details About Syrian Mass Drone Attack, Now Implies Ukrainian Connection

Ukraine is the third country Russia has indirectly implied might have aided the attacks in some fashion. On Jan. 9, 2018, an official statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense, as well as reports from state media outlets, strongly suggested that a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon patrol plane flying off the coast of Syria during the attack was somehow involved in the incident.

The implication was that the aircraft was feeding targeting information, such as the aforementioned GPS coordinates, or other information to the militants controlling the drones. These aircraft do have a robust electronic support measures suite that can collect information about various emitters, such as enemy radars, but additional electronic and signals intelligence systems have yet to become operational.

The idea that the United States is supporting ISIS, who may have been responsible, is a long-standing, but completely unfounded conspiracy theory. The U.S. government and its partners have armed groups opposed to Syrian dictator Bashar Al Assad, though, most notably with TOW anti-tank missiles. Still, there is no actual evidence whatsoever the U.S. military had a role in the attack.

Then, on Jan. 10, 2018, the Russians indirectly pointed the finger at Turkey and rebel groups it backs in Northern Syria. The Turkish government is responsible for a so-called “de-escalation zone” in Idlib governorate, which is where the Kremlin says militants launched the

Guys Spends 10 Years Making Insanely Detailed Boeing 777 Paper Airplane

When it comes to paper airplanes, designer Luca Iaconi-Stewart probably has the ultimate one.

WIRED recently visited him to check out an incredibly detailed model of a Boeing 777 that he’s been making over the past decade.

The model is so detailed, you can see tiny seats inside, there’s moving landing gear and engine parts. It is all made uusing only paper folders and glue.

Model shop celebrates 70 years of building community

Like the kits it sells, Evett’s Model Shop is far more than the sum of its parts and that’s saying something given the quality of its parts: a veteran who parlayed a single model into a career, a formerly homeless master-builder who now repairs priceless movie props and a beloved matriarch keeping her husband’s passion alive.

The shop and its family of employees will celebrate 70 years in business this Saturday with refreshments, a few giveaways and a lot of shared memories dating back to the time Santa Monica built real planes. For many attendees, it will be a bittersweet celebration without the store’s founder.

Colby Evett was part of the city’s early aeronautics industry working as a plant foreman at the Donald Douglas Aircraft Company for 13 years. He opened the model shop with his first wife, Mary, in 1948 and by 1955 he had left the aircraft industry to work in the store full time. At that time, the store moved from Pico Blvd. to its current Ocean Park location.

Colby was more than just a hobbyist, he was a pioneer in the emerging field of radio control. He acquired a ham radio license and spent five years developing the technology to pair a model airplane with radio control, enabling ground based controllers to fly their planes. He continued with his passion for decades, evolving from wooden plans with paper skins to replicas of jet aircraft complete with their own small jet engines.

Colby was unable to fly in his later years

Someone Who’s Been Interrupted

But wait, as a wise man once said, there’s more. Crossing that HYPHEN (or DASH or “-”) is 12D’s “Fruity drink brand,” which has to be HI-C.

Now you go get interrupted by the other two theme entries, but remember: You’ll be able to finish. Eventually.

Tricky Clues

5A: Yay for the BOP IT! I remember playing with this with my sister in what must have been the Neanderthal prototype, because now, apparently, you can not only bop it and pull it and twist it, but you can also selfie it. No, I’m not kidding.

25A: Wordplay alert! The abbreviated version of “highway,” or HWY, is “What may take its toll?”

33A: More wordplay! “Ewe can do it!” can be a few things, but since we have only three squares in which to do it, let’s call it a BAA.

40A: Tricky one! “Is appealing” could mean someone or something is attractive, but today we’re going the legal route, which is PLEADS.

43A: Think numbers, not physical shapes, for “Square figure?” We have only three squares, so the answer is TWO.

47A: I laughed out loud when I read this clue, because this “Body shot?” can be something entirely different than an MRI SCAN.

2D: You were thinking of a human model, weren’t you? Not today. Today, the answer is BALSA, because we’re supposed to be thinking of wooden model airplanes and
