North Pole teen heads to remote control aeronautics camp – Fairbanks Daily News

When North Pole High School student Seth Rupe flew to Muncie, Indiana, this week to attend a special remote control aeronautics camp, he did not go empty handed. He took a 5-foot-long, remote control model helicopter with him.

The 16-year-old hobbyist was awarded a scholarship to attend the Academy of Model Aeronautics Camp. He’s excited to meet other pilots and learn new skills. Since he discovered remote control flying, he hasn’t wanted to do anything else.

Seth was 9 when his interest was piqued.

“He got started at the entry level, but he has always had an interest in airplanes and aviation,” said his dad, Jeremy Rupe. “Seth picked it up very, very quickly. He flies everything right now. He also flies drones; he races drones.”

Once hooked up with a local Fairbanks group, Seth began learning new skills while also improving basic skills. The local group is the Midnight Sun Remote Control Club. The club regularly

What A Hollywood Insider Can Teach Companies About Great Storytelling

Storytelling. It’s one of the hottest topics right now. Research has shown that stories can enhance empathy, increase the ability to identify and recall key messages, and improve engagement. It’s powerful. From Hollywood to politics, storytelling has been a tool used to sell. Now marketers are jumping on the bandwagon, trying to figure out what makes great stories, how to create them, and how to do so in authentic, relevant ways.

To better understand what marketers can learn from some of the greatest storytellers in the world—Hollywood—I connected with Matthew Luhn, a former writer at Pixar Animation Studios (with story credits including Toy Story 2 and 3, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and Up) and author of The Best Story Wins: How to Leverage Hollywood Storytelling in Business and Beyond.

This is part of a series I’m writing based on his insight. The first article provided insight on five ads that tell great stories. The below is about the power of storytelling and the importance of a “hook”.

Kimberly A. Whitler: Can you start by sharing a story about why you think storytelling should matter to marketers?

Matthew Luhn: Sure. I will share a personal story about something my grandfather did. Imagine walking down a city street and running into a giant hairy gorilla. How might you react? Would it grab your attention? That’s what my grandfather had in mind when he placed “Joe” in the front window of our family’s toy store. Joe was a

Meet the Su-47: This Strange Looking Russian Jet Never Saw Combat (But Made History)

Moreover, while it demonstrated amazing instant turning performance, it was poor at sustained turns as it bled off speed quickly. Though claimed to be Mach 2-capable, the fastest speed Berkut flight speed reported was Mach 1.65.

In 1996, the March/April issue of Russian military periodical Air Fleet Bulletin published an innocuous-seeming photo of a meeting between Russian military chiefs and aviation industry counterparts. Sitting on the table before them were two model airplanes. One was an advanced variant of the by-then well-known Flanker multi-role fighter.

(This first appeared several months ago.)

The other was a strange black jet with forward swept wings—that is, the wings seemed to be swept the “wrong way.”

Whether the image amounted to an accidental leak or an intentional plant, it set off a firestorm of excited speculation in Western and Russian press forecasting a new cutting-edge jet that could outperform the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter, the production model of which made its first flight the same year.

In fact, the model represented an advanced tech demonstrator—the Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut (“Golden Eagle”).

Early in the 1980s, as the Soviet Union introduced the fourth-generation Su-27 and MiG-29 jets to oppose the American F-15 and F-16, it thought ahead to developing a fifth-generation fighter to defeat the U.S.’s Advanced Tactical Fighter program which would eventually spawn the F-22 Raptor.

Mikoyan i Gurevich worked on the MiG 1.44, which arrived nine years late after the fall of the Soviet Union only to be canceled. Concurrently, the Soviet Navy sought a new fighter

Beloved hand-crafted model planes part of 1919 transatlantic race exhibit

Dave Williams proudly poses with his favourite model plane, a Hawker Hurricane. The plane was well-known as the Royal Air Force’s main fighter at the start of the Second World War. (Paul Colbourne)

To say Dave Williams loves airplanes would be an understatement.

He has books, magazines and pictures of aircraft all over his small bungalow, and in his garage are boxes with model after model carefully packed and stored.

Williams said that after he completes his models, he just packs them away never to be displayed or looked at
again.

That is — until this past winter.

This model Vickers-Vimy is based on the one Alcock and Brown flew on their transatlantic flight of 1919. (Paul Colbourne)

The 79-year-old model builder said every airplane model that he’s built was a celebration. So when the Admiralty House Communications Museum announced that they are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Alcock and Brown’s historic non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919 with an exhibit, Williams figured he had to help out.

That’s the thing about communities and museums. It’s all about sharing and promoting local people who care about events like this.Sarah Wade, Admiralty House Communications Museum

Over the years, Williams has crafted hundreds of model airplanes — but his favourite was the Hawker Hurricane used by the RAF in World War II.

“It was the work horse of the Royal Air Force,” he said.

The Hawker Hurricane, along with the Spitfire, protected the British skies from the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain.

My Most Important Supplier Burned Through $1 Billion and Went Bankrupt. Here’s How I Saved My Company

I live in Lexington, Massachusetts, right next to Hanscom airfield. In the mid-1990s, I had some time off in between gigs. I had just taken Geerlings Wade, a direct mail wine company, public. One day I said to my wife, “You know, I’ve been watching these airplanes fly overhead every day, and I’ve always wanted to get my pilot’s license. Is that OK with you?” And she said, “Go for it.”

Boeing wanted to wait three years to fix safety alert on 737 Max

The sensors malfunctioned during a Lion Air flight in Indonesia in October and an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa in March, causing anti-stall software to push the planes’ noses down. Pilots were unable to regain control, and both planes crashed, killing everyone aboard — 346 people in all.

Float planes soar above Lake Miola

PAOLA – Shielded from the sun beneath tents and awnings, float plane owners dotted the shoreline of Lake Miola on June 1 and 2 as they tweaked their remote-control airplanes until they were ready to fly.

Like pit crew members working on a NASCAR vehicle, the float plane operators were swift and efficient as they tested batteries, checked connections and made any necessary pre-flight modifications.

A threat of bad weather may have kept some people away from the 11th annual RC Float Fly on the northwest side of the lake, but Saturday, June 1, ended up being a perfect morning for flying.

The event is organized each year by the R/C Barnstormers Club that operates miniature aircraft at a field at Hillsdale Lake.

Barnstormers member Art Kittler was excited to take his Turbo Timber plane out on its first flight. The plane’s blue trim blended in with the sky as it took off from the water and zoomed upward.

John Caoile of the 49th Mid-America Jumbo Squadron out of Lee’s Summit, Mo., was flying a Tidewater plane with its high propeller, and Pat McGhee of the RC Barnstormers had one of the largest planes at the show with his monster Polaris that measured 8 feet long and 6 feet wide.

Marty and Janie Kocman traveled to the event all the way from Tennessee, where they are members of the Memphis Prop Busters. Marty was flying a Golden Oldie plane designed in the style of aircraft from the World War I era. There was even a pilot
