Congress eyes drone regulation

A hearing on aviation safety on Tuesday was dominated by concerns over the possibility of the proliferation of unmanned aircraft systems and the threat those drones pose to commercial and other manned aircraft.

“We agree, something needs to be done to regulate them,” Ali Bahrami, associate administrator for aviation safety at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), told members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee during the hearing on the State of Aviation Safety. “We need to work with you.”

The FAA executive was responding to comments from Rep. Pete DeFazio, R-Ore., who insisted that Congress “rather stupidly rejected” the regulation of the rapidly growing number of recreational drones after a massive lobbying effort by the industry.

“It’s not a question of if, but when,” Matthew Hampton, assistant Inspector General for Aviation Audits at the Department of Transportation, said of the eventuality of a recreational drone crashing into a commercial airliner.

Several lawmakers recounted last September’s collision of a small recreational drone with an Army helicopter near Staten Island, N.Y., which damaged the helicopter’s main rotor blade, window frame and transmission deck. The collision did not cause any major injuries.

The FAA’s Bahrami said the agency is working on proposed drone regulations but it is unclear what authority the FAA’s regulations will have over noncommercial drones because of last year’s ruling by a U.S. appeals court in Washington striking down the FAA’s rule that required recreational drone owners to register their craft. The court ruled that a law passed by Congress in 2012

Model/TV show host Chrissy Teigen tweets about ’emotional support casserole’ before flight

Well, good news! Scalloped potato casseroles can be on airplanes, according to the TSA. We know you needed to know this.

Model Chrissy Teigen, known for her funny tweetstorms, tweeted at American Airlines the other day as she was going through a TSA check about wanting to bring her ’emotional support casserole’ on board with her.

Teigen, an expecting mother, was determined to take these scalloped potatoes with her.

Luckily for the soon-to-be mom of two, who is married to musician John Legend, not only did the airline respond, so did the Transportation Security Administration.

American Airlines directed her to ask TSA, and so the conversation continued:

Victory! She even tweeted a video to the delight of her followers of her bringing the food through TSA.

And later posted a picture of her with her victory winning dish of prized scalloped potatoes.

‘Big Brother’ beats ‘The Amazing Race’

The next time your dad tells you to stop lying around the house all summer and go out and make some money, tell him you’re training to win a million bucks. That’s pretty much what happened in the season finale of The Amazing Race on Wednesday night. Cody and Jessica, having spent the past season of Big Brother taking naps and snickering at everyone around them, proved themselves lively competitors in the 30th running of the “race around the world” and won the million-dollar first-place prize.

To accomplish this, the duo defeated the two other finalist teams, Yale graduates Henry and Evan and X-Games champs Kristi and Jen. For anyone who watched Cody and Jess’s time in the Big Brother house, their Amazing Race performance was startling. In BB, the duo was an isolationist pair, cutting themselves off from the rest of the household with surly sullenness — their go-to facial expressions were dead stares. On TAR, they came alive. Jess was affably chatty and frequently quite amusing in her analysis of the show’s challenges and other contestants. Cody dropped his tough-guy deadpan much of the time, extolled his love for Jess to the cameras, and powered his way through many of the most difficult “roadblocks.” It’s hard to make the case that they did not deserve to win.

Nevertheless, there was a lot of grousing on Twitter that Cody cyborg-ed his way through numerous physical
