‘Air Force Un’: Does North Korea’s leader have a plane to fly on world stage?

This sharp contrast is the byproduct of a nation that has remained cloistered since the Korean War armistice in 1953 and invested a lopsided portion of its limited trade revenue into the development of military weapons.

Since assuming power in 2011, Kim, who is thought to be in his early 30s, has tried to project a more charismatic and worldly image than his father, Kim Jong Il, and grandfather, Kim Il Sung. That has included building skyscrapers in the capital city of Pyongyang, constructing a luxury ski resort in Kangwon Province to bolster international tourism, and opening several private runways near Kim family compounds for single-engine personal jets.

Kim Jong Il was afraid of flying and, on the rare occasion that he left Pyongyang, rode in an armoured train similar to the one used by his son on the China trip last month. In recent years, the younger Kim staged a series of photo-ops designed to demonstrate that not only does he not share his father’s aversion to the skies — he took international flights to attend boarding school in Switzerland — but that he is actually a pilot.

In Dec. 2014, North Korean state media released a video of him behind the controls of the An-148, a Ukrainian-made plane designed for midrange, regional trips that was acquired by Air Koryo, the North’s national airline.

Less than two months later, images were released of Kim on a different plane — a presidential jet quickly dubbed “Air Force Un” — en route to inspect

NTSB: Ice caused incident that damaged plane during emergency landing at Austin Straubel

ASHWAUBENON – Ice is blamed for 2017 incident that heavily damaged a single-engine plane making an unscheduled landing at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.

A National Transportation Safety Board report released Monday said the pilot of the Cessna 182T reported ice developing in the plane’s wing and landing gear as he flew from Marquette, Mich., to International Falls, Minn., on the morning of Jan. 11, 2017.

The pilot said ice on the windshield was obscuring his vision, and altered his course in an effort to land at Lakeland Airport, an airstrip near Woodruff in Oneida County. When weather there wouldn’t allow him to land, he headed for a runway at Austin Straubel, southwest of Green Bay.

About 30 feet above the runway, the aircraft stalled, then slammed into the ground. The pilot walked away uninjured, but the plane was “substantially damaged,” the NTSB found.

The report does not identify the pilot, who was the only person in the four-seat aircraft.

A designer specializes in small acrylic handbags that recall long-ago glamour

Brett Heyman’s obsession with vintage clothing and handbags began when she was a teenager in Los Angeles. On weekends she frequented thrift shops on Melrose Avenue, looking for ripped jeans and old evening bags. Over time Heyman amassed a collection of more than 100 acrylic bags from the 1950s and 1960s.

“There’s something very romantic about them,” she said. “They were popular with everyone from showgirls to socialites.”

Acrylic bags, first introduced after World War II, are made from the same plastic that was used in auto and airplane parts. “While the 1950s wasn’t the most liberated decade for women, it was a period of innovation in areas as disparate as our space program and fashion,” she said. “We were setting trends globally.”

After college, Heyman worked as a public relations assistant at Gucci, where over eight years she rose to become director. After the birth of her first child, in 2009, she resigned. “I wanted to work full time but to do something more creative,” she said. “I had the confidence to start a business and had made some money to do it.”

She founded Edie Parker, named after her daughter, making and selling bright, statement-making acrylic box clutches and other accessories.

The learning curve was steep. “I felt strongly about keeping production in the United States and looked online at every plastic manufacturer in the country,” she said. “Nobody would touch it because the process is still much like it was in the

Following his mother’s passing in 1962, his father married Lenore Sweet, and the family moved to the Orchards. Ken attended Sacajawea Junior High and graduated from Lewiston Senior High in 1968.

RPT-FOCUS-New Boeing jet to accelerate services shake-up

(Repeats to additional customers with no changes to text)

* CEO says jet launch decision hinges partly on services push

* Says previous relationship with suppliers was “out of balance”

* Suppliers say new mid-market jet to rely less on risk-sharing

By Tim Hepher

March 13 (Reuters) – Boeing Co is doubling down on its landmark new strategy designed to muscle in on the business of maintenance providers by making its next jet the laboratory for in-house services that could radically alter the global business model for selling planes.

Unlike Boeing’s last all-new design, the 787 Dreamliner, its proposed new mid-market plane will not bring a flood of revolutionary technical designs to the drawing board.

But it will give the world’s largest plane maker a chance to test its new business approach of designing the plane so that it generates lucrative services revenues for Boeing while also offering efficiencies to airlines over the aircraft’s decades-long lifespan.

Along with production costs, the new approach could help Boeing decide whether to invest the $15 billion or more in development needed to build the jet.

“If we decide to launch, it’s a big investment and it’s an investment that has to contemplate not only the product itself but all of our other strategic objectives,” Chairman and Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg told Reuters.

“So you can imagine we would want to look at this airplane through the lens of lifecycle value as we are growing our services business,” he said.

Until recently, Boeing and
