Utah pilots showcase their wings at airport ‘breakfast fly-in’

NORTH LOGAN ― For most people, grabbing a bite out to eat involves driving down the street. For others, it involves climbing several thousand feet up in the air.

On Saturday morning, Dale Sorensen was one of many pilots who got into their planes and flew into Logan-Cache Airport for breakfast provided by personnel with Leading Edge Aviation, a fixed base operator.

“I always thought I wanted to be a fighter pilot, so I get up there and fool around — pretend,” Sorensen said with a laugh.

Sorensen, who flew in Saturday from Brigham City on a plane he built himself, has been flying for fun since 1972. When he’s not flying to the Midwest or the West Coast, he does “breakfast fly-ins” with his buddies.

“They get us 25 cents off on gas, so it’s nice to come over and fill up the airplanes,” Sorensen said.

But the main reason he comes is for friends.

“We’re all friends right here at the table,” Sorensen said, gesturing to Steve Sawyer and others who also flew in from Brigham City. “We’ve got a lot of stories to tell.”

Sawyer said he comes to the breakfast fly-in for “fellowship, more than anything.”

“It takes a bit of effort to fly and fly properly, you know — mental, physical and all that,” he said. “We’re all in the same boat.”

David Christensen got interested in flying through building model airplanes.

“I always wanted to be

UE teacher, 77, was funny, kind and ‘an ultra-mensch,’ friends say – Press & Sun

Friends and family can tell numerous stories about Mark L. Eisenstadt’s humor and generosity.

There was the time he made a menorah in the shape of a turkey as a decoration for Thanksgiving. Or the time, as a young boy, he “invented” a radio alarm clock, using rubber bands and duct tape. Or the times he would bring books and clothes to the children of a family who was renting a small property that he owned.

He was a true Renaissance man whose interests ranged from writing to music to tinkering in his basement workshop, his daughter, Marnie Eisenstadt, said. And he did it all with a sense of humor and a sense of kindness that people didn’t forget.

“He was an ultra-mensch,” said Arnie Cohen, a long-time friend, using the Jewish term for an upright person. “He went above and beyond for his friends,” Cohen added. “He touched a lot of people.”

These are the design tricks that make long-haul flights bearable

Blank canvas. An empty shell of a Boeing 787

A hypobaric chamber hides deep inside the research laboratories at Oklahoma State University. The university is located in an area that has an average temperature that regularly hits highs of more than 30 degrees celsius and is no more than 350 metres above sea level. For people locked inside, conditions in the airtight altitude chamber can be radically different.

During a seven-month period starting in October 2002 the chamber was fitted with 12 economy airline seats – each spaced 34 inches apart, around the average distance for seats on US planes at the time. Each morning a dozen willing volunteers entered the chamber at 10:00. Around 20 hours later, at 06:00, they were released from the sealed room.

Five movies were played on VCRs, a sleeping period took place from 23:00 to 17:00 and meals and snacks were provided. Unlike in conventional flights, the 502 volunteers who took part in the study weren’t allowed alcohol to help them pass the time. Unlimited use of the toilets was allowed.

Each group spent their 20 hours at a differently simulated altitude: from ground level (198m) to a maximum of 2,438m (almost six and a half times the height of New York’s Empire State Building).

NTSB: Ice caused plane to stall, crash at Austin Straubel

ASHWAUBENON – Ice is blamed for 2017 incident that heavily damaged a single-engine plane making an unscheduled landing at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.

A National Transportation Safety Board report released Monday said the pilot of the Cessna 182T reported ice developing in the plane’s wing and landing gear as he flew from Marquette, Mich., to International Falls, Minn., on the morning of Jan. 11, 2017.

The pilot said ice on the windshield was obscuring his vision, and altered his course in an effort to land at Lakeland Airport, an airstrip near Woodruff in Oneida County. When weather there wouldn’t allow him to land, he headed for a runway at Austin Straubel, southwest of Green Bay.

About 30 feet above the runway, the aircraft stalled, then slammed into the ground. The pilot walked away uninjured, but the plane was “substantially damaged,” the NTSB found.

The report does not identify the pilot, who was the only person in the four-seat aircraft.

The Aero Model Association at Xi’an Jiaotong University(XJTU) Won …

From April 3 to 10, the Aero Model Association in Xi’an Jiaotong University took part in the SAE International Aero Design West held in Los Angeles, United States. They competed intensely against 56 varsities from nine countries; some of the universities competing included Union College, Jyothy Institute of Technology, Louisiana State University, Warsaw University of Technology and Kanazawa University. After a review of various aspects like the design report, an on-site question and answer session and air race, the Aero Model Association at XJTU won the championship for the first time, which is considered as a gift to mark the founding anniversary of the Xi’an Jiaotong University. The Chinese flag was held high on the podium to represent the winner of the competition in model airplanes.

Rome was not built in a day

SAE (International Aero Design) is a high-level aero model design competition for university students from around the world, which was started in 1986. It was organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers and sponsored by companies like Lockheed Martin, Boeing and SOLIDWORKS. Practice theory knowledge and complete answers in the design report reflected the course of conceiving, designing, making and optimizing an airplane model to meet the demands of the mission. This competition aims to provide a “REAL WORLD” design challenge for students majoring in engineering. Its rules are designed by professionals in the field and combines modern technology and experience.

During the intense preparation, team members were dedicated to the tasks at hand, from

History on the tarmac: Wings of Freedom brings three planes to local airport

BULLHEAD CITY — History left the realm of books and movies Thursday and took up residence at

Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport.

The airport is hosting three World War II-era aircraft as part of the Wings of Freedom Tour, brought to the area by the Collings Foundation.

Greg Tippings, of Fort Mohave, was most interested in the Consolidated B-24 Liberator. His father, Charles Tippings, was a radio operator on that model of plane when he was shot down in the Pacific in 1943.

“I’d never seen one in person,”Greg Tippings said. “I wanted to see what he actually dealt with in his service, see inside one and learn more about it.”

Pilot Capt. Dorwin Wilson lost three engines on a bombing run and had to put the B-24 down in shallow water atop a coral reef.

The crew all survived, and made it to a small island nearby.

“Wilson must have done a hell of a job that day,” said Tippings, himself an Army veteran. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him.”

Also on display were a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a P-51 Mustang fighter.

Jack Robinson, of Fort Mohave, said he likes airplanes and studying the sacrifices made by those who fought in World War II. He said he was impressed by the B-17 and the missions it performed during the war.

Mike Tibbets, of Bullhead City, said he brought his grandson, Dexter Buffet, age 3, because local children don’t get many opportunities to observe history.

Event coordinator Jamie Mitchell said Wings of Freedom was started as a way
