Accused serial rapist and killer undetected working as cop

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Joseph DeAngelo’s six-year career as a cop came swiftly to an end after being busted for shoplifting a can of dog repellant and a hammer from a Pay N’ Save store in a Sacramento suburb in 1979.

Authorities are now wondering if the items he snatched were intended as tools for the sinister rash of crimes he’s suspected of carrying out.

DeAngelo, 72, was accused Wednesday of being the Golden State Killer who terrorized suburban neighborhoods in a spate of brutal rapes and slayings in the 1970s and ’80s before leaving a cold trail that baffled investigators for decades.

He was charged with eight counts of murder in three counties after being linked to the crimes through his DNA. Authorities said he was responsible for a dozen slayings and some 50 rapes and that other charges could be filed.

Fire destroys garage, classic vehicles east of Salem on Macleay Road

A fire at a backyard shop in east Salem destroyed rare classic vehicles, tools, model airplane equipment and car engines worth thousands of dollars Monday night.

No injuries were reported.

Neighbors recalled hearing three explosions — two smaller ones that sounded like shotgun blasts (but deeper in pitch) and a third that sent a fireball 50 feet into the air.

Homeowner Bob Farwell said there were four antique cars in the shop, including an extremely rare 1933 Woody Rolls-Royce and a 1929 Oakland Roadster.

The shop also contained acetylene tanks for welding, car batteries and a large tank of gasoline.

“What the hell can you do about it? Nothing,” Farwell said.

A column of thick, black smoke could be seen from miles away as firefighters allowed the fire to burn for nearly 30 minutes before attacking it directly.

Bob and his wife Karen Farwell were among the dozens of neighbors and passing motorists who stopped to watch the fire in the 7000 block of MacLeay Road SE.

They were both in the house when it started. Karen said she initially thought that the first explosion was Bob dropping something in the kitchen.

Utah veteran relives time aboard B-17 bomber he learned to fly …

SALT LAKE CITY — Buckled into a seat on a vintage World War II-era B-17 bomber, Richard Stucki looked equal parts the excited passenger and contented former aviator the soon-to-be centenarian actually was.

Stucki was enjoying a VIP flight Monday aboard the Madras Maiden — one of only a dozen B-17 aircraft still flying today — as an early birthday present from his family. He turns 100 on July 19.

The flight was arranged by one of his grandchildren who contacted the Liberty Foundation, which owns and tours the muscular, four-propeller airplane that will be on display this weekend at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Public tours will be available Saturday and Sunday at TAC Air, 303 N. 2370 West.

During World War II, the Cedar City native transferred from the Army to the Air Forces, where he became a flight instructor at Hobbs Army Air Base in New Mexico. It was there he became familiar with the mighty B-17 by making daily flights in the aircraft, he said.

“We started at six in the morning and flew till noon,” he explained. “We flew all the time and always had four students.”

Flash forward to current day and he was complimentary of the pilots manning the cockpit of the B-17 on this sun-drenched spring day.

“This was nice. (I) didn’t have quite the view I use to have sitting up front,” he joked. “It was a nice ride. They did a good job taking off and landing

Southwest Has Paid Millions in Safety Violation Fines, Faced Union Safety Complaints

Southwest Airlines runs its planes hard. Planes flying for Dallas-based Southwest make many short hops and more trips per day than other U.S. airliners, which add to wear and tear on airplane parts, including the engines.

As the investigation into last week’s deadly engine failure continues, Southwest CEO Gary Kelly could face questions about whether the company’s low-cost business model — which puts its planes through frequent takeoffs and landings — is putting passengers at risk.

Some aviation safety experts said they see no reason for alarm. And, in fact, Southwest’s safety record is enviable: Until last week, no passenger had died in an accident during its 47-year history.

Still, the Dallas-based airline has paid millions over the past decade to settle safety violations, including fines for flying planes that didn’t have required repairs. Twice in the past nine years, holes have torn open in the roofs of Southwest planes in flight.

In another episode in 2016, an engine on a Southwest jet blew apart over Florida because of metal fatigue, or wear and tear, hurling debris that struck the fuselage and tail. No one was hurt.

Then, last week, one of the engines on Southwest Flight 1380 blew apart at 32,000 feet over Pennsylvania, spraying the Boeing 737 with shrapnel and killing 43-year-old Jennifer Riordan, a mother of two who was blown partway out a broken window. The National Transportation Safety Board said a fan blade that had snapped off the engine was showing signs of metal fatigue.

The union representing Southwest mechanics recently accused

Local Cub Scouts descended on the Moapa Recreational Center and adjoining Ron Lewis Park for their annual Day Camp on April 20-21. According to supervising Boy Scouts of America representative Willie Frehner, 11 Packs of Cub Scouts, totaling over 150 boys attended the Day Camp.

This was an officially sanctioned Cub Scout camp and was open to all Cub Scouts, although most of the packs that attended were local cubs. The camp took place over two days, with 3 one hour long rotations on Friday followed by 6 rotations plus a lunch on Saturday.

The weather was absolutely perfect for the Cub Scouts, sunny but not too hot. There was enough of a breeze that kept things cool without disrupting any of the activities. The Cub Scout Packs took full advantage of the good conditions and had a wonderful camp.

This year’s camp provided all of the attending cubs a lot of fun and exciting activities. The goal of the camp was to give the young boys new skills that they could take with them after the camp was over and use in everyday life.
